Mass. College Lax: Weekend Schedule

Mass. College Lax: Locals Earn Spots In NCAA Tournaments

The NCAA released all six brackets (Division I, II and III) this evening for the upcoming men and women’s lacrosse tournaments, which start this week, and below are the squads that earned a spot, along with their first round matchup.

Men’s Division III

Mass. College Lax: Saturday Afternoon/Evening Scoreboard

There were some very important conference games that occurred this afternoon and below is our afternoon and evening roundup.

Men’s Lacrosse 

Yale 11, Harvard 10 - Despite two late tallies each by Ian Ardrey and Jack Walker, the Crimson still couldn’t complete their comeback as the Bulldogs defeated Harvard in Cambridge. With the loss, Harvard’s season concludes with a 6-8 overall mark.

No. 7 Merrimack 16, Assumption 11 - Greg MeLaugh tied a school-record with nine goals in three quarters as Warriors defeat the Greyhounds and claimed a share of the regular season Northeast-10 crown with Adelphi.

Roger Williams 9, Wentworth 8 (OT) - Ian Powers scored the game-winner 3:08 in overtime to lift the Hawks past the Leopards in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament. With the win, Roger Williams advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Western New England. Alec Paradis paced Wentworth with five points (three goals, two assists).

Norwich 9, Mount Ida 7 - Ian Thomas halted the Mustangs rally with his third strike of the afternoon at 1:20 in the fourth as the Cadets defeated Mount Ida and claimed the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) crown. Nick Yacuzzi, Michael Markevich and Phil Pichel netted two goals, respectively, for Mount Ida.

No. 9 Tufts 14, Bate 10 - The Jumbos outscored the Bobcats, 7-2, in the third as Tufts defeated Bates and secured a spot in next weekend’s New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) semifinals. Chris Schoehut led the Powder Blue and White with five goals, while Andrew Fiamengo finished with four goals.

No. 6 Middlebury 19, Amherst 9 - Jon Broome and Scott Redmond each scored two goals in the opening frame, which provided the Panthers the lead for good as Middlebury defeated Amherst and punched its ticket to the NESCAC semifinals. Devin Acton led Amherst with three goals.

UMass Dartmouth 11, Plymouth State 6 - Dennis Healy recorded four points (three goals, one assist), while Justin Lawless and Todd Davis each netted two strikes as the Corsairs defeated the Panthers.

Women’s Lacrosse 

University of New England 11, Gordon 10 – Hannah Tavella‘s 63rd goal of the season at 6:52 in the second lifted the Nor’easters past the Scots in the first round of the CCC tournament. With the win, UNE advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Endicott College. Jessica Castelline led Gordon with six points (four goals, two assists).

Curry 14, Roger Williams 12 - The Colonels outscored the Hawks, 9-2, in the second half as Curry defeated Roger Williams and secured a date with Western New England on Wednesday in the CCC semifinals. Mel Brickley led Curry with five strikes, while Haley Carey and Deanna Monfredo each finished with hat tricks.

Babson 11, Wheaton 8 - Jameson Sprang netted the go-ahead goal with 5:30 remaining in the second as Beavers defeated the Lyons and punched their ticket to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship. Charlotte De Santis led Wheaton with five points (three goals, two assists), while Sprang finished with a hat trick.

Springfield 14, Mount Holyoke 9 - Michelle Dorsey, Colleen Keeley and Meghan Flanagan each recorded a hat trick as the Pride defeated the Lyons in the NEWMAC semifinals. Mount Ida’s Molly Macdonald led all scorers with four strikes.

No. 1 Trinity 12, Tufts 8 - First-year Molly Cox scored a career-high four goals as the Bantams defeated the Jumbos and secured a spot in next weekend’s NESCAC semifinals. Kerry Eaton led Tufts with three strikes.

No. 8 Colby 11, Amherst 3 - The Mules outscored the Lord Jeffs, 8-2, in the second half, which helped them secure a first round win the NESCAC tournament and spot in the semifinals. Caroline Holliday, Elizabeth Ludlow and Hillary Densen each scored one goal for Amherst.

Worcester State 14, Fitchburg State 13 (OT) - Jackie Connors netted two of her four goals during the extra session as the Lancers defeated the Falcons in their final regular season contest. Jessica Bartlett and Lindsey White paced Fitchburg State with five tallies, respectively.

Mass. College Football: Baltimore Selects Harvard’s Juszczyk In NFL Draft

Earlier this afternoon, the Baltimore Ravens selected Harvard’s Kyle Juszczyk in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and courtesy of the athletic department, below is the release about the Crimson fullback/tight end being drafted:

NEW YORK  – Harvard senior tight end Kyle Juszczyk has been selected in the fourth round of the 2013 National Football League Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Juszczyk was the 130th overall selection in this year’s draft.

During his four years in Cambridge, Juszczyk established new career records for tight end in receptions (125, sixth all-time), receiving yards (1,576, seventh all-time) and touchdown receptions (22, third all-time). He was a two-time All-American at tight end and H-Back for the Crimson and a three-time All-Ivy selection. Following his senior season, during which he led the Crimson in receptions (52), receiving yards (706) and receiving touchdowns (eight), he was invited to the Senior Bowl, where he carried the ball four times for nine yards, primarily being used as a H-back.

“Guys like Kyle Juszczyk do not grow on trees,” Tim Murphy, The Thomas Stephenson Family Head Coach for Harvard Football, said. “He will go down as one of the great players in Harvard and Ivy Football history. His rare combination of versatility, toughness, leadership and playmaking ability was one of the major catalysts for the highest scoring offense since the Ivy League was formed in 1956.”

The Medina, Ohio native showcased all of those traits on a single play that will live on in Harvard lore for years to come. After catching a ball over the middle against Bucknell this past, the senior bulldozed the first defender in his path. He then shed two arm tackles and stiff armed another defender before outrunning the rest of the Bison defense for a 59-yard touchdown in the Crimson’s 35-7 win. The play ended up on ESPN’s Sportscenter the following day as the No. 3 play in its top 10 segment.

Juszczyk becomes the fourth player drafted under Murphy. He joins Matt Birk ’98, who recently retired after winning the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens this past season, Isaiah Kacyvenski ’00 and Ryan Fitzpatrick ’05 as players who have heard their name called at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Overall, he is the 20th Harvard player to get drafted and first since Fitzpatrick was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2005 draft.

Harvard wrapped up its spring football season Saturday with its annual spring game and will now turn its head to the 2013 season opener at San Diego on Sept. 21.

Mass. College Lax: Harvard, UMass Look To Extend Their Seasons

The next two days are very important dates in the Division I college lacrosse world as various teams will be competing for spots in their conference tournament. And two of those teams – Harvard and UMass – have a chance to extend their season with wins.

Harvard – The Crimson’s road to the Ivy League tournament won’t be easy, as they’ll have to defeat Yale, a squad that’s ranked 15th on this week’s USILA poll. If Harvard pulls out a win, they’d advance to Ithaca, New York, for next weekend’s semifinals. Harvard would most likely draw the fourth seed and play Cornell, who defeated the Crimson in Cambridge earlier this month.

UMass – Believe it or not, but the Minutemen have a chance to obtain the final CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) spot with a win and some help. In order for UMass to extend its season, they’ll need to beat Delaware tomorrow and have Hofstra and St. Joseph’s lose on Saturday. A loss to Delaware concludes their season.

Harvard’s Kyle Juszczyk has always wanted to play professional football, and this weekend his dream could come true as he, along with hundred of other college football players from across the country, will wait anxiously to hear their name announced at this year’s NFL Draft.

According to recent reports, the Harvard fullback/tight end has met with a slew of NFL teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, who maybe interested in his services as Vonta Leach is entering his final year of his contract.

Excluding the Ravens, the Ivy League standout has met with the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers.

The Baltimore Sun confirmed in a report last week that Juszczyk was “snubbed” from this year’s NFL scouting combine, but performed quite well at his campus Pro Day workout.

Juszczyk finished last season tied for first in the Ancient Eight with eight touchdown receptions and fifth in yards per game (70.6). His best effort occurred against Princeton as he finished the contest with three touchdown receptions and 15 catches for 192 yards.

The Ohio native, who played four seasons with the Crimson, ended his career with 125 receptions for 1,576 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Harvard’s last player to be drafted was Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is currently a member of the Tennessee Titans.

It was a busy, but important Saturday for a lot of local teams that’re trying to secure spots for the upcoming conference tournaments and below is our roundup.

Men’s Lacrosse: 

Harvard 8, No. 14 Penn 7 (OT) – Murphy Vandervelde netted the game-winner 1:18 into overtime on a man-up to provide the Crimson their second consecutive win of the week. Vandervelde led all scorers with a hat trick, while Devin Dwyer finished with four points (one goals, three assists). With the win, Harvard improves to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play.  

No. 4 Merrimack 13, Pace 6 - Corey Lunney finished the contest with seven points (four goals, three assists) as the Warriors cruised to their eighth consecutive victory. Lunney’s seven points matches his effort from last weekend against Souther New Hampshire.

No. 4 Tufts 12, Amherst 8 – Beau Wood jumpstarted a 7-0 run at 6:44 in the first, which provided the Jumbos with the lead for good as Tufts topped Amherst and improved to 11-1 against the Lord Jeffs over the last 10 years. First-year Garrett Clarke netted his first collegiate strike at 11:50 in the fourth.

Endicott 15, Roger Williams 9 - Trailing the visiting Hawks, 7-6, at the break, the Gulls rallied to outscore the visitors, 9-2, during the final 30 minutes to secure their 10th win of the season. Harrison Cotter registered a team-best three tallies, while Jonathan Morgan and Chris Murphy each netted two goals.

UMass Boston 8, UMass Dartmouth 7 (OT) - Ryan McGoff scored seven seconds into the extra session as the Beacons defeated the Corsairs and earned their first Little East Conference win. Dom Fichera paced UMass Boston with five tallies, while UMass Dartmouth’s Adam Niden finished with a hat trick.

Women’s Lacrosse: 

No. 16 Princeton 11, Harvard 9 - Micaela Cyr registered a hat trick and one helper, but that wasn’t enough to lift the Crimson past the Tigers.

No. 1 LIU Post 15, No. 11 Stonehill 12 - The defending NCAA Division II champions fended off a second half rally by the Skyhawks to claim their 10th win of the season. Heather Sullivan recorded five goals in the setback, while Ashley Armstrong deflected 12 shots between the pipes.

Wheaton 10, Mount Holyoke 9 – Brooke Sabol recorded a season-best four goals, while Charlotte De Santis and Melanie Sharick each netted hat tricks as the Lyons earned their fifth conference win of the season.

No. 10 Amherst 6, No. 17 Tufts 5 - Marta Randall scored the game-winning strike with 13 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Lord Jeffs to victory. Caroline Ross led the Jumbos with two tallies.

Western New England 19, University of New England 18 - Taylor Scialdone registered a game-best nine points (six goals, three assists) as the Golden Bears edged the Nor’Easters in Springfield.

Mass. College Lax: 10 Saturday Games To Watch

Happy Saturday to everyone! In honor of another gorgeous day in Massachusetts, we’ve decided to provide a list of great lacrosse games to attend this afternoon.

Make sure to circle back later this evening for recaps, roundups and releases.

Men’s Lacrosse: 

* No. 2 Cornell at Harvard, 1 p.m. – This is a big game for the Crimson, who almost defeated Duke last weekend. Cornell will provide challenges for Harvard’s defense as the attacks and midfielders for the Big Red can dodge and slide quite well. Harvard will need to stop Rob Pannell, who is the nation’s third leading scorer (5.4 points per game).

* UMass at Towson, 1 p.m. – The Minutemen’s offense has been suspect this season, but in an important conference match it’ll be important for them to locate the back of the net.

* Williams at No. 4 Tufts, 1 p.m. – The Jumbos enter today’s tilt on a six-game winning streak, while the Ephs are coming off a tough quadruple overtime setback to Bowdoin.

* Middlebury at Amherst, 2 p.m. – This is a big one for the Lord Jeffs, who snapped their three-game skid last weekend with a victory against Hamilton. The Panthers, who’re 7-1, started the current month with a 16-8 victory against New England College.

Women’s Lacrosse: 

* Navy at Holy Cross, 12 p.m. – The Crusaders have done quite well in Patriot League play. Yet, can they improve their mark to 3-1 against Navy?

* No. 9 Stonehill at No. 7 Le Moyne, 12 p.m. – The Skyhawks picked up their seventh win on Wednesday and will attempt to conclude their three-game road trip with a win against the Dolphins.

* So. Conn. State at No. 12 Bentley, 12 p.m. – The Falcons defeated AIC on Wednesday, 16-2, which snapped a two-game skid. Can they carry that momentum into this afternoon’s contest against the Owls?

* BU at Vermont, 1 p.m. – The Terriers haven’t won a game away from Nickerson Field this season, so a victory against their America East foe would be huge.

* Duke at BC, 1 p.m. — This is another big game for the Eagles, who defeated Virginia last weekend, 10-7. Duke enters the contest on a one-game losing streak as the Blue Devils lost to North Carolina last Thursday in overtime.

* No. 10 Amherst at No. 3 Middlebury, 1:30 p.m. – Could the Lord Jeffs pull an upset against the third best team in the land? Amherst is 1-1 against Middlebury in the past two seasons, but the Panthers defeated the Lord Jeffs last season, 8-5.

Mass. College Hockey: All-New England Teams & Awards

BOSTON – The New England Hockey Writers Division I and II/III Men’s and Women’s All-Star teams and awards have been finalized after tallying votes from all Division I, II and III coaches and respective media outlets throughout New England. This year’s banquet will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass. The banquet will start at 6 p.m. All awards and All-Star teams will be presented at the gala. All coaches, student-athletes, family members and friends are encouraged to attend Tuesday’s banquet.
