Countdown to 34th Women’s Boston Beanpot: Harvard University

By NoontimeSports.com

Our trip to the 34th Annual Women’s Boston Beanpot on Tuesday, Jan. 31, begins with a quick look at the Harvard University Crimson.

Harvard Crimson Women’s Hockey:

Record: (14-6-1)

ECAC Record: (11-4-1)

Current Streak: The Crimson enter Tuesday’s contest against Boston University having won three of their last four contests.

Last Beanpot Championship: Harvard has won the tournament 13 times, although the last time they were crowned champions was in 2010 when they defeated Northeastern, 1-0.

Biggest Win: Harvard beat-up Yale University, 8-0 on Jan. 27, as well as outshot the Bulldogs, 46-9.

Toughest Loss: Their two toughest losses this season came against Cornell University. The Big Red defeated the Crimson early in the season in Ithaca, New York, as well as in Cambridge by a combined score of 7-3.

Player to Watch: Make sure you keep your eye on junior forward Jillian Dempsey, who leads the team with 26 points, (13 goals, 13 assists). Against ECAC opponents, Dempsey has deposited eight goals, and tallied eight assists.

Beanpot Prediction: In the past three years, Harvard has made three appearances in the title game. They won in 2010, but lost to Boston College in 2009 and 2011, so you can bet they’re going to seek some type of revenge against the Eagles. However, don’t expect the Crimson to overlook their first round matchup against Boston University, who is currently riding a three-game winning streak. If the Crimson can get by the Terriers, expect them to be a tough out in the title round against Boston College or Northeastern University.

Countdown to 34th Women’s Boston Beanpot: Northeastern University

By NoontimeSports.com

Our trip to the 34th Annual Women’s Boston Beanpot on Tuesday, Jan. 31, begins with a quick look at the Northeastern University Huskies.

NU Huskies Women’s Hockey:

Record: (17-6-2)

Hockey East Record: (11-3-2)

Current Streak: The Huskies enter Tuesday’s opening round having won two of their last three contests. However, their most recent matchup ended with a 3-2 loss against Boston University.

Last Beanpot Championship: It’s been 14 years since Northeastern was deemed the Beanpot champion, as the Huskies skated past the Harvard Crimson, 5-4 in 1998. Northeastern also defeated Boston University in the opening round that year, 9-0.

Biggest Win: Against Yale University, the Huskies destroyed the Bulldogs, 7-0 in Connecticuit. Northeastern tallied three goals in the second and third frames, which helped them secure their fifth win of the season on October 22, 2011. Another big win also came against New Hampshire on January 21, as the Huskies defeated the Wildcats, 8-0.

Toughest Loss: One of the more excruciating losses of the season occurred on November 26, 2011, as the Huskies rallied to tie the game, 3-3 against Dartmouth, who wound up scoring the game-winning goal literally 51 seconds after the puck dropped to initiate overtime. The Big Green won, 4-3, and handed the Huskies their fourth loss of the season.

Player to Watch: Freshman Kendall Coyne has experienced a great deal of success this season, as she leads the team with 39 points, (22 goals, 17 assists). I am expecting her to be one of the players to watch on both Tuesday’s.

Beanpot Prediction: Northeastern is certainly the dark horse in this tournament, and could certainly be one of the squads slated to face-off for the championship. They’ve played quite well over the past few weeks, and now, it’s time to see if they can use that momentum from the past few weeks to help them claim their 15th tournament championship.
