Prior to the game, seniors Casey Marren (Derby, Conn./Notre Dame), Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John’s) were honored as part of the 2013 Senior Day ceremony.

Assumption jumped on top just 2:28 into the game as sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) tallied his ninth goal of the season, off an assist from MacNeil. The Falcons answered though with even-strength goals from Bobby Hinds and Tim Matheson to tie the game at 2-2 with four minutes left in the quarter. Sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y/East Syracuse Minoa) put the Hounds back in front 13 seconds later as he fired a shot from the left side for his 19th goal of the season. The score was set up by a faceoff win by freshman Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) as he picked up the ground ball and fired the pass to a streaking Smith for the goal. Nick Astarita tied the game again on his sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-3 margin after one.

The second quarter was all Greyhounds as Assumption received goals from Martina, sophomore Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Munisteri to outscore the Falcons by a 3-1 margin in the period for the 6-4 halftime lead.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Smith pushed Assumption ahead to its biggest lead of the game at 7-4 with 11:29 left in the game. Matt Dente cut the lead down to 7-5 with 8:08 left before Dan Keefer scored his first goal of the season to cut the edge down to just one with 50 seconds left. Assumption regained possession and called timeout with 16 seconds left before killing off the remaining seconds for the one-goal win.

Smith, Martina and Munisteri each posted two goals, along with two assists from junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon). For Bentley, six different players found the back of the net, along with six separate players recording an assist.

Assumption was nearly perfect in clear attempts, clearing 18 of 19 attempts. Ground balls were even at 28 each, while Bentley held a 9-6 edge in faceoffs.

Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made nine saves in the win, while Jarrod Dillon turned aside eight shots in the loss.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons fall to 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 17th as the Hounds play host to Pace University for a 4 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

Courtesy of the Bentley University sports information department, here’s this evening’s release about the men’s lacrosse team, which will commence their 2013 season on Saturday against New York Tech at 1:00 p.m.:

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men’s lacrosse team will get its 2013 season underway on Saturday when they host No. 6 New York Tech at 1:00 pm. The Falcons were picked fifth in the Northeast-10 preseason poll.

Led by head coach Jim Murphy, now in his 21st season, the men’s lacrosse team is coming off a season where they qualified for the NE-10 playoffs for the fifth straight year and 11th time in 12 years.

Part of making it back to the postseason will require making up for the loss of the top-three scorers from 2012, as J.D. Ayer (22-5-27), Brendan Grant (20-6-26) and Richard Travers (11-11-22) all graduated. Senior midfielder Steve Caditz (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), who was named to the preseason All-New England team, is the top returning scorer after netting 15 goals last year. Junior Nick Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) is the next leading returning scorer after contributing six goals in 2012.

A number of underclassmen then will have opportunities to step into bigger roles on the offensive end. Among them are junior Jordan Reals (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy), and sophomores Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) and Bobby Hinds (West Hartford, Conn./Conard).

Defensively things are a bit more settled heading into the season. Returning are defenseman Billy Sweeney (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), named to the preseason All-New England team, Riley Merritt (Weston, Mass./Brewster Academy) and 2012 NE-10 All-Rookie choice Telemachus Demoulas (Lowell, Mass./Middlesex School), alongside long stick midfielders Matt Lopes (Webster, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and Tim Cobb (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy).

In goal, junior Brian Karl (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and senior Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), who both saw action last year, return.

On the schedule Bentley will be challenged early with two teams ranked by the USILA. New York Tech comes into Saturday’s game at No. 6, and the second team on the schedule, LIU Post, is No. 9. The always difficult NE-10 will present its own set of challenges with four teams, Le Moyne, Merrimack, Adelphi and St. Michael’s currently

New England Lacrosse Classic: Game Summaries

By NoontimeSports.com

Here is our recap from Saturday’s New England Lacrosse Classic, which featured two collegiate games and one high school match.

Foxborough 6, Sandwich 2: In the first game of the day, Foxborough High School’s boy’s lacrosse team earned their sixth victory of the season by defeating Sandwich by four goals. Tyler Ames paced the Warriors with two goals and one assist, while Villanova-bound netminder Greg Stamatov deflected nine shots between the pipes. Nick Buttafuaco and Liam White each notched a goal for Sandwich in the loss.

Merrimack 12, Bentley 11: Merrimack sophomore Brandon Walter scooped up the biggest ground ball of the contest with 27 seconds remaining in regulation, and initiated the game-winning strike, as junior Greg Melaugh received the ball a few seconds after a Warriors clear and rushed into the Bentley zone to net his fifth goal of the contest.

John Smyth ended up carrying the ball over, and a couple games ago there was a time at the end of the game and I was like, ‘you’ve got to get me the ball when I’m open’ and he knew to give me the ball and he just gave me the flip, the [defense] played me too aggressive and I had space down the middle and I just took it,” Melaugh said of his game-winning strike.

Melaugh’s clincher was marked his second in four days — the junior scored the game-winner against St. Anselm on Apr. 17, which lifted the Warriors past Hawks, 11-10 in North Andover.

UMass 14, Hofstra 13: The Minutemen marched off the Gillette Stadium turf with their 12th victory of the season, and also a CAA division crown, as they defeated Hofstra by one goal.

Senior Art Kell and junior Kyle Smith paced the Minutemen with three goals a piece, while red shirt senior Tim McCormack deflected seven shots between the pipes.

UMass jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Hofstra responded with two back-to-back tallies by sophomore Lance Yapor and freshman Mike Malave. The Minutemen answered with four additional tallies, and entered halftime with an 8-4 lead, which eventually transformed to 10-10 after three frames.

Hofstra earned the lead once the fourth quarter began with an unassisted strike by junior John Antoniades before UMass strung together four consecutive goals, which helped the Minutemen preserve their perfect record.

This weekend, they’ll look conclude their abbreviated two-game home stand with a win against Dartmouth.

* Crimson senior attackman Jeff Cohen was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week on Monday, Mar. 19, due to his recent success in his team’s past two contests. Cohen has netted 23 goals in six games this season, and recently became Harvard’s fourth leading scorer with 117 strikes.

* Merrimack’s men’s lacrosse team has yet to play a game at home this season, but that hasn’t stopped them from posting a 2-0 record. The Warriors have two more road contests before their home opener against Franklin Pierce on Mar. 27.

* Merrimack sophomore Paul Jones has been a major contributor for the Warriors offense thus far with three goals and six assists, while junior Terence Barclay remains the sole leader with seven goals.

* Bentley’s women’s lacrosse team is currently on a two-game skid, as the Falcons recently fell to C.W. Post and Limestone last week. However, they’ll look to snap their losing streak on Wednesday, Mar. 21, when they host Southern New Hampshire – a team that’s currently on a one-game winning streak.
