Mass. College Lax: Mills Leads Wheaton Past Wellesley, 17-4

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wheaton College women’s lacrosse team used a dominating performance to upend Wellesley College, 17-4, on Tuesday afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.

Junior Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) paced the offense with a game-high five markers and two draw controls. Freshman Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) facilitated play with two goals and a game-high five assists. Classmates Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, Mass./Concord) and Mia Cambi (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and senior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) all contributed three goals apiece.

Wellesley junior Brit Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass./Pingree School) opened up the scoring at 28:56 of the first half with her first of three goals on the evening. Sophomore Claire Canty (East Rockaway, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) wrapped added the Blue’s only other marker at 1:53 of the second half.

After Mscisz gave Wellesley a 1-0 lead at 28:56, Wheaton’s offense took over burying 17-straight goals during a span of 46 minutes and four-seconds of action that stretched into the final stanza. Mills registered four tallies, Moreira had three goals and Cambi and Tewksbury found the back of the net twice, respectively, to guide the Lyons 11-0 to close out the first 30 minutes of play.

Sophomore Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) led all players with six draw controls, Moreira collected four and Mills notched two. Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stopped a game-high six shots to bump her record to 6-3 on the season. Wellesley junior goalkeeper Tori Hysko (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) made three saves in the loss.

The Lyons won the ground balls matchup, 12-11, and also the draw controls battle, 14-9.

Wheaton (6-4, 4-0 NEWMAC) visits Tufts University on Thursday, April 11 for a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. The Lyons are the only remaining team in the NEWMAC with an unblemished conference record. Wellesley (6-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) travels to Springfield College for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m.

Saturday was a rather busy day for the NESCAC and NEWMAC conferences, as  some squads punched their ticket to the semi-finals or finals, while others watched their season come to an end.

NEWMAC Women’s Lacrosse:

Babson College 24, Wellesley College 12 – The Beavers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, and never looked back, as they punched their ticket to their conference championship for the second consecutive season. Taylor Kralovenec paced Babson with eight goals, while Jameson Spang recorded seven tallies and two assists. Wellesley’s Brit Mscisz led the Blue with six goals.

Springfield College 7, Wheaton College 6 – Michelle Dorsey netted an unassisted strike with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, which lifted Springfield past Wheaton College in Babson Park. Kelly Gallo recorded a hat trick in the win, while goaltender Anne Versprille recorded nine saves. Charlotte DeSantis led the Lyons with three goals and one assist.

NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse:

Tufts 14, Amherst College 10 – Geordie Schafer jumpstarted the Jumbos offense with two tallies, which helped Tufts earn a comfortable, 5-0 lead at 14:06 in the second quarter. The Lord Jeffs stormed back by registering five unanswered strikes before Cole Bailey tallied his second goal of the contest in the fourth, which preserved the victory for Tufts.

NESCAC Women’s Lacrosse:

Middlebury 12, Tufts 8 – Liza Herzog and Michaela Colbert combined for six tallies and one assist, as the Panthers defeated the visiting Jumbos by four goals. Middlebury finished the contest with 24 shots, 17 ground balls, and 14 clears, too. Kerry Eaton paced Tufts with four goals and one assist in the loss.

Amherst 9, Bowdoin College 7 – Despite a back and fourth contest, Amherst managed to pull ahead for good at 9:24 in the second half when Allie Horwitz, (four goals) recorded an unassisted strike, which helped the Lord Jeffs defeat the visiting Polar Bears by two tallies. Amherst ended the match with 18 ground balls, 10 clears and 21 shots.
