The Masters: Day One Wrap Up

Noontime Sports is pleased to welcome a wonderful new writer to the website, Brad Wright, who will keep all of our fans, readers and  avid radio show/podcast listeners informed these next few days with his notes from The Masters golf tournament.

By Brad Wright

After the first round of The Masters, there are indeed a few players who really stood out from the rest, but also, there are those who didn’t perform quite well on Thursday.

Rory McIlroy posted a seven-under and was one of the more impressive golfers on the day, but it will be interesting to see if he can stay at this current pace, especially since he has been a 17-hole leader before. During the British Open 2010, McIlroy carded the lowest score during the first round and then finished in the 80′s after his second go around.

Alvaro Quiros who won the Dubai Desert Classic this year, also carded a 65 and certainly is a name to possibly remember.

* Another player that struck out was Martin Kaymer. Kaymer is yet to make the cut at Augusta since he shot a six-over.

* Two players who will always be in the hunt are Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Tiger shot one-under par with a few clutch putts. He has won the Masters four times and has a first round scoring average of above par.

* Phil Mickelson is the reigning Masters champion and he shot two-under par on Thursday. Expect another impressive day from him on Friday.
