The story of Nick Parson is an interesting one.

The former Wheaton College (MA) graduate, who double-majored in Political Science and African American Diaspora Studies, as well as minored in Modern European History, has spent the past two-year pursuing a career in baseball media relations. And despite not having a communications degree, Parson has utilized the various skills he obtained at Wheaton to help him experience successful stints with the Bourne Braves, Hickory Crawdads and Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

In February of 2012, Parson landed a public relations seasonal assistant position with the Oakland Athletics, and discussed his role with the ball club, as well as his various duties on Wednesday’s Noontime Sports the Podcast.

Three Outs: Cotuit Kettleers and Hyannis Harbor Hawks–Cape Cod Baseball League

By Brian Willwerth

COTUIT– On Sunday night, the Cotuit Kettleers outslugged the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, 14-8.  Here are three takeaways from the game.

1.   James Roberts

On a night when 16 of the 18 players from both teams had at least one hit, Roberts had the most.  The shortstop from USC had four hits for the second straight game.  On Sunday, he also had four RBI and scored twice.  He raised his batting average to .333.

2.  Cotuit’s Hit Parade

The Kettleers had 16 hits.  Besides Roberts, four other Cotuit players had at least two hits and scored at least two runs: Adam Nelubowich (Washington State,) Daniel Aldrich (College of Charleston,) Jacob May (Coastal Carolina) and Mike Ford (Princeton.)

3. Effective Bullpen

Looking at the score, it’s hard to think there was solid pitching in this game.  But after Hyannis scored seven runs in the second inning, Cotuit’s Dusty Isaacs (Georgia Tech) and Jordan Smith (Western Carolina) held the Harbor Hawks to just one run and four hits the rest of the way.

A Closer Look At Mike Ahmed (Bourne Braves)

Despite going 0-for-4 on Tuesday against the Y-D Red Sox, Mike Ahmed is certainly a player to watch this season in the Cape Cod Baseball League! (Photo Credit: Brian Willwerth)

YARMOUTH, MA – The 2012 Cape Cod Baseball League season is just getting started, and already a Massachusetts native is swinging a hot bat.

Mike Ahmed, of East Longmeadow and attending Holy Cross, is hitting .391 through the first six games with the Bourne Braves. And that’s even with his 0-4, three-strikeout performance on Tuesday against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, where he started in left field. He had a four-hit game last week against Hyannis, and homered and drove in three runs in the season opener against Harwich. His hot started earned him Player of the Week honors for the first week of the season.

Last month, Holy Cross announced Ahmed would be a co-captain for the Crusaders’ 2013 season, and it’s easy to see why. In his sophomore season, he was named to the first team All-Patriot League. He finished with a .295 average, and led the league in runs scored, hits, home runs, doubles and RBI. He also made 13 appearances on the mound with a 2-1 record.

Stratton Leads Harwich Mariners Past Cotuit Kettleers

Chris Stratton pitched eight-shutout innings against Cotuit on Monday, as the Harwich Mariners picked up an important win!

By Brian Willwerth

COTUIT, MA – In a Cape Cod Baseball League matchup between the first-place team in the east and the last-place team in the west, Harwich pitcher Chris Stratton was at the top of his game. It didn’t hurt that he had plenty of help from his teammates.

Stratton, a sophomore from Mississippi State, threw eight-shutout innings as the Mariners defeated the Cotuit Kettleers on Monday night, 10-0.

While Stratton was masterful on the mound, his teammates struck for 13 hits off of Cotuit pitchers, four of them coming off the bat of right-fielder Austin Wilson, a freshman from Stanford. Wilson had the most memorable hit of the game: a mammoth home run over everything in left. He would add an RBI double later in the game. The Mariners also got multiple-hit games from Mike Garza (Georgetown,) Jake Davies (Georgia Tech) and Darnell Sweeney (Central Florida.)

It was a rough outing for Cotuit starting pitcher R.J. Fondon, a junior out of Florida International. He gave up seven runs over five innings. He dropped to [2-2] on the season.

Stratton, on the other hand, improved to [1-1] with three no-decisions. He hasn’t given up a run in each of his last two outings. With Monday night’s gem, he lowered his ERA to 1.74.

On Tuesday night, Harwich hosts Wareham, while Cotuit remains home to take on Orleans.
