Daily Noontime – December 21, 2011

Happy Wednesday y’all, and welcome into another tremendous Daily Noontime! Here’s some kick-butt news stories and headlines, enjoy! 

Headlines: 

* According to sources — the Chicago Bulls have inked Derrick Rose‘s name on a five-year, $94 million contract.

* Through 14 games this season, Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has recorded just 930 yards, but is determined to earn 1,000 yards before the season concludes.

* Denver Broncos team president John Elway confirmed on Tuesday that his plan is to keep Tim Tebow as their quarterback for next season.

* Saturday’s game between the New York Giants and Jets will certainly be pivotal for both teams, especially if they’d like to make the playoffs.

* The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up an important win on Tuesday, as they defeated the scorching hot Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2. The loss marks the end of a five-game winning streak for the Hawks.

Games to Watch: 

* Montreal at Chicago (NHL) – 7:30pm eastern 

* Philadelphia at Dallas (NHL) – 7:30pm eastern 

* Detroit at Vancouver (NHL) – 10:00pm eastern

Kansas City Upsets Green Bay, Indianapolis Earns First Win Against Tennessee

The last unbeaten has fallen. The last winless team is winless no more.

Welcome to “Upset Sunday” in the NFL.

With all the hype surrounding the Patriots/Broncos epic matchup in Denver, the first big headline of the day came from Arrowhead Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs, who fired head coach Todd Haley less than a week ago, pulled off the shocker of the year: a 19-14 victory over the previously undefeated Packers.

Kyle Orton threw for 299 yards – 64 more than Aaron Rodgers. Jackie Battle scored Kansas City’s lone touchdown of the game to seal the deal.  Rodgers pulled Green Bay to within five in the closing minutes, but the Chiefs were able to run out the clock. The end result: the Packers’ first loss since Dec. 19, 2010, and a Gatorade bath for interim Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel.

The Packers still have the inside track to the No. 1 seed in the NFC, but Sunday’s result gives other teams hope.

Meanwhile, at Lucas Oil Stadium, another long streak ended. The Indianapolis Colts finally won a game. With a 27-13 victory over the Titans, Indianapolis avoided becoming the second 0-16 team in NFL history, (Detroit is alone in that regard). The Colts’ defense forced three turnovers, and Donald Brown rushed for 161 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that sealed the deal.

Indy’s defense held Chris Johnson to just 55 yards on the ground.

While those were the most notable upsets of the day, they weren’t the only ones.

The Panthers beat the Texans. Houston was one of four teams that came into the day tied for the No.1 seed in the AFC.

The Seahawks beat the Bears at Soldier Field. Chicago hasn’t won since losing quarterback Jay Cutler to an injury.

The Redskins walked into the Meadowlands and put a dent in the Giants’ playoff hopes.

NFL Week 13 – Afternoon/Evening Scoreboard

A recap of Week 13 in the NFL – three of Sunday’s games was decided on the final play of regulation, or overtime. We’ll start with those.

PACKERS 38, GIANTS 35 — Our “Game of the Day” will no doubt get some votes for “Game of the YEAR” when all is said and done. Green Bay and New York combined for nearly 900 yards of total offense. Let’s jump right to crunch time.  Trailing by eight in the final minute, Eli Manning threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks. The Giants made the two-point conversion to tie the game, but then Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers got the ball at his own 20 with 0:58 left on the clock. It only took two big plays for him to lead his team into field goal range. Mason Crosby kicked the game-winning, 30-yard field goal, as time expired, and yes, the Packers improved to [12-0]. Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, while Manning tossed three.

CARDINALS 19, COWBOYS 13 (OT)  – What a wild ending in Glendale, Arizona, and one that will be talked about a lot in Dallas for the next few days. With 0:07 remaining, Dan Bailey was lining up for a game-winning field goal attempt. A timeout was called to ice the kicker. But, the stoppage was called by Dallas head coach Jason Garrett. Bailey’s kick, which went through the uprights, did not count. He had to try it again, and came up short. Arizona got the ball to start overtime, and Kevin Kolb hit Larod Stephens-Howling, who danced through the Cowboys’ defense and into the end zone for a 52-yard, game-winning score. And it’s all because Jason Garrett iced his own kicker, wow!

BRONCOS 35, VIKINGS 32 – Don’t look now, but Denver is now tied for first place in the AFC West. And once again, Tim Tebow led his team from behind. He threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Then after the Broncos picked off Christian Ponder with less than two minutes remaining, they marched down the field and Matt Prater kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired. Tebow is now [6-1] as the Broncos’ starting quarterback.

TITANS 23, BILLS 17 – Chris Johnson is finding his groove. He ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns in Tennessee’s victory at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Johnson has rushed for over 100 yards in three of his last four games.

CHIEFS 10, BEARS 3 – While this was hardly the best game of the day, it may have featured the play of the day or maybe it was just Kevin Harlan’s voice that made it special. The only touchdown of the contest came on the final play of the first half, when Tyler Palko’s “Hail Mary” pass landed in the arms of Dexter McCluster.  Chicago suffered a significant blow when Matt Forte left the game with a right knee injury.

DOLPHINS 34, RAIDERS 14 – Here’s the upset of the day. In Miami, the Dolphins made it look easy against the first-place Raiders. Reggie Bush ran for 100 yards and a touchdown. Miami scored two touchdowns within 20 seconds of each other in the third quarter.

PATRIOTS 31, COLTS 24 – They love Rob Gronkowski in Foxboro, Massachusetts, as the tight end scored three more touchdowns, giving him 13th touchdown receptions on the season. His other score was a rushing TD on a lateral. The Pats built a big lead, and then hung on as the Colts scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. Indianapolis is now [0-12], while New England is [9-3].

STEELERS 35, BENGALS 7 – This was a statement game for Pittsburgh. At Heinz Field, Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes, as the Steelers swept the season series from Cincinnati, who is now [0-3] against the two teams ahead of them in the AFC North, (PIT and BAL.)

PANTHERS 38, BUCCANEERS 19 – This was all about Cam Newton. Carolina’s rookie quarterback rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another at Raymond James Stadium. Josh Johnson started at quarterback for Tampa Bay in place of the injured Josh Freeman. The Bucs, who at one time were [4-2], and in first place, have lost six in a row.

JETS 34, REDSKINS 19 – At FedEx Field, the Jets kept their playoff hopes alive by rallying for 21 points in the fourth quarter. Mark Sanchez found Santonio Holmes for the game-winning touchdown with 4:49 to play. Washington has lost seven of its last eight.

TEXANS 17, FALCONS 10 – It doesn’t matter who’s playing quarterback for Houston; the Texans keep on winning. Rookie quarterback T.J. Yates played mistake-free football, and Arian Foster rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown.  Atlanta QB Matt Ryan’s last-second pass in the end zone fell incomplete.

49ERS 26, RAMS 0 – We have our first division winner. San Francisco wrapped up in the NFC East with an easy victory at home over St. Louis. Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes, while Frank Gore ran for 73 yards, and became the franchise’s career rushing leader.

RAVENS 24, BROWNS 10 – Neither a driving rainstorm nor Cleveland’s defense could slow down Ray Rice. The Baltimore running back broke loose for a career-high 204 yards, as the Ravens remained in first place in the AFC North. They own the tiebreaker over the Steelers.

Willwerth: Breaking Down The AFC

A quick overview of the division races in the AFC with five games remaining…

AFC EAST

The Patriots are in great shape. They have a two-game lead over the Jets, and own the tiebreaker by virtue of beating New York twice already. Their next two games are against the winless Colts and the subpar Redskins. It looks more and more like there will be another home playoff game in Foxboro in January.

The Jets came up with a much-needed win over the Bills last Sunday to stay in the playoff hunt. Buffalo, after getting off to such a hot start, has dropped four straight and now sits at 5-6.

AFC NORTH

This is the best division in football. The Ravens and Steelers are tied atop the division at [8-3] records, but Baltimore has the edge because it has beaten Pittsburgh twice. What makes the North so intriguing is the surprising play of the Bengals. They’re [7-4], just one game out of first place. But they’ve already lost to both Pittsburgh and Baltimore once, so the Bengals would have to beat those teams the second time around to have any shot at the division title. Still, it is very possible that both wild cards could come from the North.

AFC SOUTH

The Texans are [8-3], riding a five-game winning streak, and have one of the best defenses in the league. But who’s going to play quarterback for them the rest of the way?  Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart are both done for the year with injuries.  Right now T.J. Yates is the man, but you’d have to think Houston’s going to pick someone up for the stretch run. Tennessee is in the hunt at [6-5], and if Chris Johnson keeps running like he did Sunday against the Buccaneers, watch out.

AFC WEST

While the North may be the best division in football, the West may be the most interesting to watch down the stretch. And it’s all because of one guy: Tim Tebow. People can say what they want, but he’s [5-1] as a starter. As much hype as there is surrounding Tebow, people tend to overlook the fact that the Raiders have a one-game lead over Denver, and are coming off a big win at home against the Bears. Oakland and Denver split the head-to-head matchups during the season.

So who is the best team in the AFC? Take your pick. There is a four-way tie for the top spot between the Pats, Ravens, Steelers and Texans. We may not know who gets the byes until the final weekend.

NFL Week 12 – Afternoon/Evening Scoreboard

JETS 28, BILLS 24 – We’ll start at the Meadowlands for our Game of the Day. It was a matchup between a pair of teams in desperate need of a win. Mark Sanchez was the hero for the Jets. He threw four touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Santonio Holmes with just over a minute remaining. He completed barely half of his passes, but came through when he needed to. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three TD passes for Buffalo in a losing effort. Another thing that will be talked about is the play of Buffalo wide receiver Stevie Johnson. After catching a TD pass, his ensuing celebration won the “poor taste” award, since he made fun of the Plaxico Burress nightclub incident from three years ago, (if you saw the game, you know what I mean). Then late in the fourth quarter, he was wide open down the middle of the field, and dropped a pass that would’ve gone for a huge gain. In the end, the Jets swept the season series from the Bills.

FALCONS 24, VIKINGS 14 – At the Georgia Dome, Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes as Atlanta hung on to beat Minnesota. Here’s the stat of the game: Percy Harvin returned a kickoff 104 yards late in the fourth quarter, but did not score a touchdown. The Vikes ended up getting stuffed by the Falcons’ defense.

BENGALS 23, BROWNS 20 – What a wild finish at Paul Brown Stadium. With less than two minutes to play, Phil Dawson missed a 55-yard FG that would’ve given Cleveland the lead. Cincinnati raced right back down the field, courtesy of a 51-yard pass from Andy Dalton to A.J. Green. Mike Nugent’s 26-yard FG allowed the Bengals to improve to [7-4], and remain very much alive in the AFC playoff picture.

TITANS 23, BUCCANEERS 17 – This was the breakout game Chris Johnson has been waiting for. He rushed for 190 yards. But ultimately it was Matt Hasselbeck’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Damian Williams on fourth down that gave Tennessee the win at home. The Bucs drove down the field in the closing seconds, but Josh Freeman fumbled a snap on fourth down that sealed Tampa Bay’s fate. There were nine turnovers in this sloppy game: five by the Bucs, four by the Titans.

PANTHERS 27, COLTS 19 –Carolina won its first road game in nearly two years.  DeAngelo Williams rushed for two touchdowns as the Panthers sent the Colts to [0-11] on the season. It doesn’t get any easier for Indy; a trip to Foxboro awaits them next Sunday.

CARDINALS 23, RAMS 20 – This was a good game between a couple of struggling teams. The star of the game was Arizona running back Beanie Wells, who set a franchise record with 228 yards on the ground, including a 71-yard touchdown.  Patrick Peterson also returned a punt for a TD for the fourth time this season.

TEXANS 20, JAGUARS 13 – Houston keeps losing quarterbacks, but continues to win games. In Jacksonville, Matt Leinart injured his throwing shoulder in the Texans’ victory over the Jags. They’ve already lost Matt Schaub for the season with a right foot injury. T.J. Yates played the rest of the way on Sunday.  Fortunately for the Texans, their defense is outstanding. They sacked Blaine Gabbert six times.

PATRIOTS 38, EAGLES 20 – At one point, the score was 10-0 Philadelphia. Then Tom Brady and company got down to business. Brady was (24-34, 361 yards and three touchdowns), including two to Wes Welker. The Pats also got two rushing touchdowns from BenJarvus Green-Ellis. New England is [8-3], while the Eagles – a team that had such high expectations – fell to [4-7].

RAIDERS 25, BEARS 20 – In Oakland, the Raiders stayed in first place in the AFC West. Sebastian Janikowski tied a team-record with six field goals, four of them from 40+ yards. Chicago QB Caleb Hanie, filling in for the injured Jay Cutler, was picked off three times.

REDSKINS 23, SEAHAWKS 17 – Washington scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to rally for the win in Seattle. The game-winner was a 50-yard scoring pass from Rex Grossman to Anthony Armstrong with just over six minutes remaining. The Redskins snapped their six-game losing streak.

BRONCOS 16, CHARGERS 13  (OT)  – In San Diego, it took nearly five full quarters of football to determine the winner. Matt Prater kicked 37-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining in overtime as Denver won its fourth straight and kept pace with the Raiders in the division. Earlier in OT, Nick Novak missed a 53-yarder that would’ve won the game for San Diego. Tim Tebow threw for 143 yards and rushed for 67 more.

NFL 2011: AFC South Predictions

Usually, we’d consider the Indianapolis Colts a shoe-in to win this division, but due to their quarterback’s health, anything’s possible. This division is a toss-up, but as long as we play our cards right, Houston will end up being victorious.

1.) Houston Texans [9-7] – Expect defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’s [3-4] scheme to help Mario Williams attack the opposition a lot easier than before. Quarterback Matt Schaub is due to have a decent season, but only if the offense stays healthy and executes properly.

2.) Indianapolis Colts [7-9] – With or without Peyton Manning, the Colts are still somewhat a dangerous team. Yet, add Kerry Collins to the mix and what do you get? Well… a LONG season in Indianapolis, Indiana. Expect some unknown players to step up and fill the void, especially if Manning misses the entire season.

3.) Tennessee Titans [5-11] – Don’t expect Matt Hasselbeck to be the savior, especially since he’s literally playing for the Seattle Seahawks 2.0. Chris Johnson will be a threat to opposing defenses, but otherwise that’s literally all the Titans have to offer besides decent food and “Country Music.”

4.) Jacksonville Jaguars [3-13] – Former defensive lineman Hugh Douglas apparently wants to punch head coach Jack Del Rio for releasing quarterback David Garrard. The Jaguars enter the season with two unreliable quarterbacks, as well as a team that probably couldn’t beat a junior varsity high school squad. It’s going to be a rough year in Northern Florida.

Chris Johns might be a happy man these days, right?

Happy Friday to everyone and of course, happy weekend too! Here’s our  daily headlines and news, so of course, enjoy! 

Headlines: 

* It’s been a while, but finally, Chris Johnson has a brand new contract with the Tennessee Titans.

* Apparently the MLB seems a tad bit skeptical about a $1.2-billion bid to purchase the bankrupt Los Angles Dodgers.

* Once again, the New York Yankees made things interesting, as they beat the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, 4-2.

* The Boston College Eagles will kick-off their 2011 season on Saturday, as they host Northwestern University. Although, it seems pretty apparent that the squad is rather confident with quarterback Chase Rettig.

* Once again, the vocal Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs has asked for a trade, but will he get it?

* As of recently, researchers at Boston University are studying the brain of former New York Rangers Derek Boogaard and hoping to understand more about his recent death.

* Chicago White Sox at Detroit (MLB) – 7:05pm eastern 

* Texas at Boston (MLB) – 7:10pm eastern

Daily Noontime – August 16, 2011

Happy Tuesday to everyone and yes, it’s indeed time for another Daily Noontime! So, sit back, relax and enjoy our headlines and news of the day! 

Headlines: 

* The New York Jets took their talents to Houston, Texas on Monday evening, yet, they didn’t win their first preseason game, which probably aggravated head coach, Rex Ryan.

* According to multiple reports, the New England Patriots wide receiver, Wes Welker has been considered the true “MVP of training camp.”

* Apparently the Houston Astros current ownership isn’t ready to say, so long to their squad. In fact, according to a recent report, the “MLB owners are not ready to vote Astros sale.”

* The Texas A&M president, R. Bowen Loftin apparently stated on Monday that no big changes have occurred recently, however, he  certainly optimistic about his school joining the SEC Conference.

* Yet again, the Tennessee Titans and running back Chris Johnson remain far apart due to a contract issue. Will it ever end? Who knows!

* The NBA lockout is about to reach the two month mark, but, does anyone care? Well, who knows, but Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen has a few thoughts, which is rather important.

Daily Noontime – August 12, 2011

Mr. Chris Johnson is expected a MAJOR pay raise!

Happy Friday and welcome to yet another awesome version of the Daily Noontime! Here’s the headlines and news, so enjoy, friends! 

Headlines: 

* According to reports, University of Southern California could apparently block any NFL moves to have a team play at the Coliseum while a new stadium is being built in Los Angles.

* Well, apparently the Tennessee Titans are interested in making Chris Johnson the highest paid NFL running back, as long as he shows up to camp.

* The New York Yankees got some help from Robinson Cano on Thursday against the Los Angles of Anaheim Angels, as his home run put his team one game behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings.

* Steve Stricker fired a 63 at the PGA Tournament on Thursday, which apparently tied a tournament record.

* Justin Verlander led the Detroit Tigers past the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, as well as earned his 17th win of the season too.

* Denver Broncos head coach John Fox was quite pleased with quarterback Tim Tebow‘s performance on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Daily Noontime – April 14, 2011

Good morning to everyone and welcome to the final Daily Noontime for the week, so get excited! It is indeed Friday, so let’s get you ready for the weekend with today’s news and headlines, as well as video of the day. 

Headlines: 

* Apparently the Washington Capitals fans are super excited and revved up for the NHL playoffs.

* Philadelphia Phillies Cliff Lee pitched a gem on Thursday, as he struck out 12 Washington Nationals.

* Bill Parcells has apparently decided to tell the media that he made a mistake with the Miami Dolphins in 2009, when the team drafted Pat White.

* Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson wants two things to happen this offseason. First, he wants his team to draft Cam Newton and second,he wants the team to keep Vince Young.

* It is indeed official, the Boston Red Sox and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have agreed on a seven-year, $154 million contract.

* The Sacramento Kings may not move to Anaheim, but is that a good or bad thing?
