Daily Noontime – May 23, 2012

Happy “hump day” to everyone! The rain seems to be subsiding, which means sunny days are here again, right? OK… OK… here are some headlines and news from the city of Boston.

* Baltimore jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, and never looked back, as their lead ballooned into a 4-1 victory on Tuesday evening against Boston. Kevin Youkilis hit his third home run of the season, along with his 10th RBI, while Adrian Gonzalez registered one hit.

* Boston and Baltimore will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday at 12:35PM – Daniel Bard opposes Jake Arrieta.

* According to reports – Cody Ross could miss six to eight weeks with a fractured bone in his left foot. Ross injured his foot last Friday after he fouled a ball off his foot, and is now the seventh Sox outfielder to be placed on the disabled list.

* Boston will attempt to close out their second round series with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday at 8PM. The Celtics currently lead the series, 3-2.

* Philadelphia is 4-0 this postseason after a loss, and 4-1 at home. There only loss at the Wells Fargo Center came against Boston in Game No. 3 of this particular Eastern Conference series.

* Finally, former UMass men’s ice hockey goaltender Jonathan Quick recorded 38 saves in a span of 77:42 on Tuesday for Los Angles, which helped the Kings eliminate the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL Western Conference Finals.

It’s Friday, which means it’s officially time to celebrate the end of the week, right? OK… OK… before the workday concludes, let’s dish out some headlines, news and more from the Bay State!

* Cody Ross concluded Thursday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Rays with four RBIs and one home run, as Boston ended their two-game series with a 5-3 victory. Felix Doubront lasted 5.2 innings on the bump, and recorded his fourth win of the season, while Marlon Byrd smacked his first long ball in a Sox uniform.

* Boston will continue its current road trip on Friday when they travel to Philadelphia for their first inter-league clash of the season — Daniel Bard will oppose Cole Hamels — first pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.

* Daisuke Matsuzaka experienced his longest rehab start on Thursday in North Carolina with the PawSox, as the right-hander pitched 6.2 innings and yielded four earned runs. He also recorded three strikeouts, hit one batter and surrendered two home runs.

* The Boston Celtics will attempt to earn a two-game series lead on Friday when they return to the hardwood for Game. No 4 against the Philadelphia 76ers, which is scheduled for 8:00PM. The Green and White spent their off day recovering from their gigantic victory on Wednesday, and watching film.

Happy “Hump Day” to all, and welcome into yet another stupendous edition of the Daily Noontime! Here are some headlines and news to tell your friends!

* The Boston Celtics evened their first round series against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday with an 87-80 victory. Paul Pierce led the Green and White with 36 points, while Joe Johnson paced the Hawks with 22 points.

* Both Boston and Atlanta will return to the hardwood for Game No. 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Friday – tip is slated for 7:30pm at the TD Garden.

* According to the Atlantic Journal Constitution – Josh Smith sustained a sprained left knee with 5:14 remaining in regulation. Smith, who remained in the game until the whistle sounded, aggravated it when attempting to deny Kevin Garnett a rebound.

* Despite ending the month of April with a critical win at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox kicked off May with a 5-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics. The Sox are now 0-3 in games where they’ve had a chance to push their record over .500, too.

* Against the Athletics, David Ortiz recorded his 21st double of the season, while Cody Ross hit his fifth double of the year. Felix Doubront lasted four innings, and yielded six hits and five earned runs, but still managed to strikeout eight batters in the loss.

* Boston and Oakland will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:10pm — Daniel Bard will be on the bump for the Sox, and will oppose Brandon McCarthy.

* Finally, reports confirmed that Boston College dismissed Eagles running back Montel Harris for repeated violations of team rules.

Daily Noontime – April 30, 2012

It’s hard to believe, but April is officially coming to a close!

Good Monday to everyone, and welcome into another grand edition of the Daily Noontime! Let’s kickstart the day with some news and headlines from Boston.

* The Boston Celtics dropped their first playoff game on Sunday, as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Green and White, 83-74. Josh Smith posted 22 points and 18 rebounds for Atlanta, while Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo each paced Boston with 20 points.

* Atlanta and Boston will return to the hardwood for Game No. 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7:30pm.

* Sources confirmed after Game No. 1 that Rondo will most likely miss one game for being ejected on Sunday, and possibly two for colliding with referee. If Boston does lose their all-star point guard, they’ll most likely have to rely on Avery Bradley to carry the load.

* The Boston Red Sox had their six-game winning streak snapped on Sunday, as the Chicago White Sox defeated the local nine, 4-1. Cody Ross recorded his 18th RBI, while David Ortiz cranked his ninth double of the season.

* The Red Sox, who’re now 10-11, will attempt to snap their one-game skid against the Oakland Athletics — Clay Buchholz opposes Tommy Milone.

* Kevin Youkilis expressed that despite being a late scratch on Sunday, he believed could have been a pinch hitter. Youkilis is currently dealing with a sore lower back, but hopes to be back in the lineup on Monday.

Daily Noontime – April 24, 2012

It’s Tuesday, which means this week is slowly motoring along. And while we anxiously await Game No. 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Wednesday, let’s jumpstart the day with some news, notes and headlines.

* Cody Ross hit two home runs, and Daniel Bard recorded his first win as a reliever, as Boston snapped their five-game skid and defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-5.

* Against the Twins, Adrian Gonzalez recorded his 10th RBI, while Ross registered his 13th. Also, Alfredo Aceves earned his third save of the season.

* Boston and Minnesota will return to the diamond on Tuesday for an 8:10pm start – Josh Beckett opposes Nick Blackburn.

* The Boston Celtics will play their second to last regular season contests on Tuesday, too, as they welcome the Miami Heat to the TD Garden for an 8PM tip-off. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett may not play against the Heat, as head coach Doc Rivers indicated during Monday’s practice that both players may one of the remaining contests.

* Wes Welker apparently will be making a few appearances on various ESPN shows on Tuesday and will also be hosting a live online chat, too.

* Finally, the Boston Bruins seventh game of their quarterfinal series against Washington will begin at 7:30pm on Wednesday.

Red Sox Recap (Apr. 22, 2012)

I’m not going to blame you, dear reader, if you wish to skip over this brief column.

What else can Bobby Valentine do?

Every single member of the Red Sox’s bullpen has been thrashed at one point or another in this young season, and in yesterday’s debacle against New York, none of them were able to pitch well enough to hold a 9-8 lead.

The real shame here is Felix Doubront pitched a gem. He went six innings allowing one run on 99 pitches. This is where, for me alt least, the 100 pitch cutoff for pitchers is completely bogus. Doubront got stronger and stronger as the game went on and was pulled when he was in the zone. As much as the Fox baseball broadcasts irk me, Tim McCarver had it dead on when he uttered those same sentiments.

The Red Sox now sit at a 4-10 mark, one half game better than Theo Epstein‘s Chicago Cubs (4-11).

The front office has screwed this team for years to come if drastic changes are not made soon. The Sox tried to play the Yankees’ game, scooping up high-priced free agents in the hopes of winning numerous division titles.  Only the Yankees can play that game. The Red Sox need to get back to playing the farm system game and scooping up free agents like Cody Ross; capable, dependable players who, while they may never set the world on fire, will never kill a team either.

Two weeks ago I wrote Boston’s obituary for 2012.  It seems after yesterday’s loss we may be writing Boston’s obituary through 2015.

Happy Patriots Day! It’s going to be a scorcher, but before we melt away, let’s kick-start the day with news and headlines!

* The Boston Red Sox earned their third consecutive win on Sunday, as they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-4. David Ortiz recorded a double, and his 10th RBI, while Cody Ross smacked his second home run of the season. Also, Mike Aviles went 1-for-4 with a home run and RBI.

* Boston and Tampa Bay will conclude their four-game series on Monday at 11AM – Daniel Bard opposes James Shields.

* On Sunday evening, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine told WHDH-TV’s SportsXTra that he doesn’t think Kevin Youkilis is “physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason.”

* The Boston Celtics concluded the weekend with a 2-1 record, as they defeated the Charlotte Bobcats, 94-82. Avery Bradley and Brandon Bass both registered 22 points, while Rajon Rondo tallied 20 points and 16 assists. The Green and White will conclude their road trip on Tuesday when they travel to New York to face the Knicks.

* Finally, the Boston Bruins will attempt to earn their second win against the Washington Capitals on Monday, as both teams return to the ice for Game No. 3 of this best of seven series. Washington won Game No. 2 on Saturday, 2-1 in double OT, while Boston captured the first contest, 1-0 in overtime.

For the first time this season, Boston won a baseball game, as they defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-2 on Monday.

Darnell McDonald and Cody Ross recorded the team’s final two runs, while Alfredo Aceves picked up his first save after a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Daily Noontime – April 10, 2012

It’s Tuesday, which means this particular week is motoring along. And while we anxiously await for another weekend, let’s get the day started with some headlines and news from Boston.

* The Boston Red Sox needed a ninth inning rally to pick up their first win of the 2012 season, as they defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-2. Darnell McDonald and Cody Ross scored the team’s third and fourth runs, while Alfredo Aceves picked up his first save after a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

* Boston will attempt to double their win total on Tuesday when Daniel Bard opposes Kyle Drabek at 7:07pm in Toronto.

* According to reports – Boston’s Kevin Youkilis is frustrated about his 12 plate appearances this season. The third baseman is currently 0-for-12 at the dish, and leads the team with five strikeouts, (Adrian Gonzalez also has five strikeouts, too).

* The Boston Celtics will look to earn a critical victory on Tuesday when they travel to Miami to face the Heat. The Green and White have 10 games remaining before the playoffs, and will certainly have their hands full during this final stretch.

* ESPNBoston confirmed on Monday that the Celtics were tabbed as the No. 6 team in basketball according to the recent ESPN rankings. Last week, the Celtics were slated at the No. 7 team, but recent victories bumped them up to their newest spot.

* Lastly, we’re two days away from the Boston Bruins first playoff contest against the Washington Capitals, which is scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 12 at 7:30pm.

Mike Aviles Wins Shortstop Battle

Mike Aviles has won Boston’s starting shortstop job, beating out 22-year-old prospect Jose Iglesias, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.  Image

In 38 games with Boston in 2011 after coming over in a trade, Aviles hit .317 and scored 17 runs off the bench. Aviles began his career as a shortstop for Kansas city in 2008, when he hit .325 in 102 games for the royals and took 4th in Rookie of the Year voting.

The Red Sox made the smart move, as they have Nick Punto to man the bench and will thus enable Iglesias the ability to play every day and work on his batting mechanics. The Red Sox have an exceptionally deep bench this year, having signed Cody Ross, getting Ryan Sweeney in a trade with Oakland, and Punto coming over via free agency. Ultimately, this move will help the Red Sox transition to Iglesias without any real hiccup.

Boston has yet to decide on the final two members of their starting rotation, although Felix Doubront has made a strong case for a position. With the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees loaded with talent, Boston will have to utilize every option available in order to make the playoffs after last season’s collapse.
