It’s Thursday, which means the weekend is right around the corner. And while we anxiously await for Friday, let’s jumpstart this particular day with some headlines and news.

* Boston will return to Fenway Park on Thursday, and attempt to earn their second win in May against the Cleveland Indians. The Sox have only won win in the current month, which was against the Royals on Monday, but have lost seven of their last eight contests.

* According to reports – Josh Beckett, who is scheduled to pitch the first game against the Indians in Boston, supposedly spent an off day last week playing golf while nursing a lat muscle. Beckett did not appear in Sunday’s 17 inning contest against Baltimore due to his “injury,” and hasn’t appeared on the bump since April 29, against the Chicago White Sox.

* The Boston Celtics will attempt to end their first round series against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday at the TD Garden. Boston has a 3-2 advantage, and has won two out of three games at home.

* Finally, Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Kevin Garnett is the dirtiest player in league. He also claimed that the Celtics are an old team, too.

Happy “Hump Day” to everyone, and welcome into yet another outstanding edition of the Daily Noontime! Here are some headlines to jumpstart this gloomy day thus far!

* The word “gloomy” is a good way to describe both the Boston Celtics and Red Sox games from Tuesday, as both teams watched their current winning streaks get snapped.

* Atlanta halted a 7-0 run by Boston, and swarmed Rajon Rondo following a steal with approximately nine seconds remaining in regulation to earn an 87-86 win. Boston still leads, 3-2, and will attempt to punch their ticket to round two on Thursday when both squads return to the hardwood.

* Al Horford led all scorers with 19 points, while Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce each tallied 16 points in the loss.

* After Tuesday’s game concluded, Pierce downplayed his knee injury by saying, “I don’t think it bothered me too much.” Boston’s captain finished the contest 7 of 17, and recorded six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

* Kansas City ended Boston’s one-game winning streak on Tuesday, as they defeated the Red Sox, 6-4. David Ortiz recorded his 13th double, while Kelly Shoppach and Dustin Pedroia each registered an RBI in the loss.

* After their second contest against the Royals, Will Middlebrooks told reporters that he hopes to be in the lineup on Wednesday despite tightness in his left hamstring.

* Finally, the New England Patriots inked former Denver Broncos tight end Daniel Fells to a contract for the upcoming 2012 season. Fells, who was really close to signing with the Patriots in 2010, ended up joining the Broncos for the past two seasons. Although, once the free agency period began this year, he realized that joining New England would be the right thing.

Also, Avery Bradley, who dislocated his shoulder during Friday’s contest, finished Sunday’s game with six points, one rebound and one steal.

In case you missed it, here’s an awesome video recapping the month of July!

Red Sox Weekly Review

By Matt Noonan

The Boston Red Sox enter a brand new week with a two-game losing skid, thanks, Seattle, I’m sure the local nine appreciates it!

However, despite their west coast struggles from this past weekend, which usually seem to occur in the month of August, yet again, Tim Wakefield watched another start end without his 200th career victory. Indeed, it’s heartbreaking news, however, will Wakefield eventually win and celebrate that special milestone? Of course, but obviously it won’t be against the Mariners, as the Sox wrapped up their season series with a 5-3 loss on Sunday.

Kevin Youkillis ended Sunday’s contest with his 17th home run, as well as his 78th RBI of the season, however, it wasn’t enough to spark the Sox offense.

Yet, despite the Sox struggles on Saturday and Sunday, they managed to win two-of-three games against the Minnesota Twins. Alfredo Aceves and Matt Albers each recorded wins on Monday and Tuesday, while Jonathan Papelbon collected two additional saves. Although on Wednesday, Jon Lester struggled and so did the offense, as Minnesota’s bats came alive to win the series finale, 5-2.

WEEK OUTLOOK: The Sox will return to Fenway Park on Tuesday for a day-night double header against the Tampa Bay Rays. They’ll wrap up the two-day series on Wednesday and then travel to Kansas City and Texas for an eight game road trip.

DIVISION UPDATE: The New York Yankees-Rays contest was postponed due to rain on Sunday, but, since the Red Sox ended their weekend series with two back-to-back losses, the Bronx Bombers currently remain a half a game behind Boston in the American League East division. Also, New York has a comfortable 8.5 game lead over Tampa Bay and Los Angles for the Wild Card, yet, despite the winner of the AL East, it’s pretty certain that both the Red Sox and Yankees will be playing baseball in October.

Daily Noontime – July 21, 2011

New England Patriots fans will never forget the late great, Myra Kraft!

It’s hot… in fact, it’s getting too hot, right? Yep, it’s Thursday and of course, it’s summertime, which means, it’s going to be a hot one, so drink loads of water and stay cool, my friends! In the meantime, here’s the Daily Noontime for Thursday July 21, 2011.

Headlines:

* It seems that the NFL owners can ratify a deal on Thursday for a new CBA despite the fact that the NFL PA hasn’t voted.

* Sad news came Wednesday morning, as the world learned of Myra Kraft‘s passing, which is an incredible loss for the entire Kraft and Hiatt family, as well as the New England Patriots.

* Apparently the Texas Rangers are planning a new “lay out” for ballpark safety, so they can prevent any future injuries or deaths.

* The MLB Trade Deadline hasn’t come or gone just yet, however, the Detroit Tigers acquired Wilson Betemit from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for two Class-A prospects.

* Tiger Woods is back in the news due to firing his old caddy, which could be a good or bad thing, right?

* Well, the Ivy League has made some changes for the upcoming football season, which will hopefully limit “head trauma.”

* The Seattle Mariners made an interesting move on Monday, as they released outfielder Milton Bradley.

* According to a NFL Network television show, which is counting down 100 influential players for the upcoming 2011 season, the Dallas Cowboys learned on Tuesday that Tony Romo (72) and Jay Ratliff (75) made the cut.

* Dallas and Oklahoma City will play Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday and some wonder if the Mavericks or Thunder could not only win this round, but also the NBA Finals.

Chris from New Jersey: A Few Opening Day Thoughts

It's certainly tough to be a Mets fan, according to Chris Hurd, but with a news season comes a new beginning!

By Chris Hurd

Ah yes, spring is in the air.

The NFL is in a labor dispute, the NBA is on its way to a labor dispute, the NHL is plodding along, and I am going to get 5-9 inches of snow tonight in Northern New Jersey (come on!!!).

With the NCAA Championship still a few days away, it is time to begin talking about the only sport left that America does not have to worry about, Major League Baseball.  And as all good de-facto sports aficionados do at this time of year, it is time to tell you all who is going to make the Playoffs and the World Series.

Pay attention Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals fans, you are about to find out you can go home with some other teams right now.  I mean really, why bother playing the season.  But, I digress……….

I have to preface these picks by mentioning I am a Mets/National League fan (Noontime sports needed me to present a balanced MLB picture, you know)

The American League Playoff Picture:

AL East: Boston Red Sox

AL Central: Detroit Tigers

AL West: Texas Rangers

AL Wild Card: Chicago White Sox

The Logic: The East and the West were easy for me to call.  Although there is the possibility of the Angels being better, I don’t think that they will be good enough down the stretch this season to get over the hump vs. the Rangers.

The Red Sox are the cream of the crop in the Al East, no doubt.  The more interesting question that can be asked here is who will push them, the Rays or the Yankees?  I would content that it will probably be the Yankees, but don’t count out the young Baltimore Orioles making a K.C. Royals type run of 2003.

The Central was a tougher call because I think that the wild card will come out the this particular division and who do I have winning that special prize…Ozzie Guillen’s Chicago White Sox. Detroit’s staff seems to be the tops in the Central and will break the recent stranglehold over the division that the Minnesota Twins have had.

The National League Playoff Picture:

NL East: Philadelphia Phillies

NL Central: Milwaukee Brewers

NL West: San Francisco Giants

NL Wild Card: Cincinnati Reds or Atlanta Braves

The Logic: Again, I had a very easy time calling the East and the West in the National League.  Philadelphia’s pitching staff makes them the favorite, but the absence of Chase Utley for any extended period of time should be a cause for concern.

The Atlanta Braves will give the Phillies a run, and of course, my New York Mets will be eliminated from playoff contention after Opening Day!

The World Series champion San Francisco Giants have what it takes to return to the playoffs in 2011, with the same pitching staff intact from last season. I would not be surprised if the West is a close race, but we will have to see how the young arms of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Madison Bumgarner will hold up after a short off season.

In the Central, I am going with the popular pick this off-season, the “Brew-Crew” (Milwaukee Brewers).  Great moves in the offseason brining in Zack Grenke and Shaun Marcum, and you have to believe that Prince Fielder will have a big season heading into a free agent year.

The Reds should be good enough to challenge the Brewers for a playoff spot, but I cannot rule out the Braves from making a return this season too. They had a chance last year and have the pieces to get over the hump. The Reds play the Braves for the last time in a mid-July series, so I have to think at that point both squads will be scoreboard watching for the rest of the season.

Let’s leave it at that for now, but I mean, I don’t want to dampen every team’s hopes by calling the World Series now, so I’ll save that for another blog, but in the meantime … Be Good All!
