Mass. College Lax: Saturday Afternoon/Evening Scoreboard

There were some very important conference games that occurred this afternoon and below is our afternoon and evening roundup.

Men’s Lacrosse 

Yale 11, Harvard 10 - Despite two late tallies each by Ian Ardrey and Jack Walker, the Crimson still couldn’t complete their comeback as the Bulldogs defeated Harvard in Cambridge. With the loss, Harvard’s season concludes with a 6-8 overall mark.

No. 7 Merrimack 16, Assumption 11 - Greg MeLaugh tied a school-record with nine goals in three quarters as Warriors defeat the Greyhounds and claimed a share of the regular season Northeast-10 crown with Adelphi.

Roger Williams 9, Wentworth 8 (OT) - Ian Powers scored the game-winner 3:08 in overtime to lift the Hawks past the Leopards in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament. With the win, Roger Williams advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Western New England. Alec Paradis paced Wentworth with five points (three goals, two assists).

Norwich 9, Mount Ida 7 - Ian Thomas halted the Mustangs rally with his third strike of the afternoon at 1:20 in the fourth as the Cadets defeated Mount Ida and claimed the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) crown. Nick YacuzziMichael Markevich and Phil Pichel netted two goals, respectively, for Mount Ida.

No. 9 Tufts 14, Bate 10 - The Jumbos outscored the Bobcats, 7-2, in the third as Tufts defeated Bates and secured a spot in next weekend’s New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) semifinals. Chris Schoehut led the Powder Blue and White with five goals, while Andrew Fiamengo finished with four goals.

No. 6 Middlebury 19, Amherst 9 - Jon Broome and Scott Redmond each scored two goals in the opening frame, which provided the Panthers the lead for good as Middlebury defeated Amherst and punched its ticket to the NESCAC semifinals. Devin Acton led Amherst with three goals.

UMass Dartmouth 11, Plymouth State 6 - Dennis Healy recorded four points (three goals, one assist), while Justin Lawless and Todd Davis each netted two strikes as the Corsairs defeated the Panthers.

Women’s Lacrosse 

University of New England 11, Gordon 10 – Hannah Tavella‘s 63rd goal of the season at 6:52 in the second lifted the Nor’easters past the Scots in the first round of the CCC tournament. With the win, UNE advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Endicott College. Jessica Castelline led Gordon with six points (four goals, two assists).

Curry 14, Roger Williams 12 - The Colonels outscored the Hawks, 9-2, in the second half as Curry defeated Roger Williams and secured a date with Western New England on Wednesday in the CCC semifinals. Mel Brickley led Curry with five strikes, while Haley Carey and Deanna Monfredo each finished with hat tricks.

Babson 11, Wheaton 8 - Jameson Sprang netted the go-ahead goal with 5:30 remaining in the second as Beavers defeated the Lyons and punched their ticket to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship. Charlotte De Santis led Wheaton with five points (three goals, two assists), while Sprang finished with a hat trick.

Springfield 14, Mount Holyoke 9 - Michelle DorseyColleen Keeley and Meghan Flanagan each recorded a hat trick as the Pride defeated the Lyons in the NEWMAC semifinals. Mount Ida’s Molly Macdonald led all scorers with four strikes.

No. 1 Trinity 12, Tufts 8 - First-year Molly Cox scored a career-high four goals as the Bantams defeated the Jumbos and secured a spot in next weekend’s NESCAC semifinals. Kerry Eaton led Tufts with three strikes.

No. 8 Colby 11, Amherst 3 - The Mules outscored the Lord Jeffs, 8-2, in the second half, which helped them secure a first round win the NESCAC tournament and spot in the semifinals. Caroline HollidayElizabeth Ludlow and Hillary Densen each scored one goal for Amherst.

Worcester State 14, Fitchburg State 13 (OT) - Jackie Connors netted two of her four goals during the extra session as the Lancers defeated the Falcons in their final regular season contest. Jessica Bartlett and Lindsey White paced Fitchburg State with five tallies, respectively.

The Division III lacrosse world happened to be the main spotlight on Tuesday and below is the various afternoon matchup summaries.

Men’s Lacrosse:

Hamilton 8, Williams 7 (OT) – Bryan Hopper scored the game-winning 14 seconds into overtime, which lifted the Continentals to their seventh victory of the season. Williams’ Steven Kiesel and Colton Growney each registered two goals in the setback.

Western New England 11, Wentworth 4 – Adam Knapton recorded a game-best six points (four goals, two assists), while George Knapp added three points (two goals, one assist) as the Golden Bears defeated the Leopards.

Women’s Lacrosse:

Wheaton 15, Babson 12 – Leila Mills poured in a season-high seven goals as the Lyons defeated the Beavers and claimed the NEWMAC regular season championship. Charlotte De Santis and Amy Moreira registered four tallies, respectively, while Jameson Sprang paced Babson with four strikes.

Endicott 20, University of New England 9 – Holly Davis paced all scorers with a season-best 10 points (eight goals, two assists), whole Kelly Tierney recorded six points (four goals, six assists) as the Gulls defeated the Nor’easters in Maine.

Curry College 21, Salve Regina 15 – Ana Bottary registered 10 points (seven goals, three assists), Haley Carey netted eight strikes as the Colonels defeated the Seahawks and earned their 11th win of the season.

Conn. College 8, Springfield 6 – The Camels erased a four-goal deficit at the break as they rallied past the Pride in Springfield. The Pride, who recorded six tallies in the first session, was held scoreless for the final 30 minutes. Michelle Dorsey led Springfield with a hat trick.

Mass. College Lax: Springfield Earns Important Win Against Wellesley, 15-7

Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s lacrosse team picked up an important conference win on Saturday morning as it defeated Wellesley College, 15-7, on Stagg Field in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.

Springfield boosts its record to 8-6, 3-2 in league play, while the Blue even its record at 6-6, 1-3 in conference action.

For Springfield, Connie Nielsen tallied four goals, while Michelle Dorsey and Kelly Gallo each recorded hat tricks. Meghan Flangan recorded two goals and an assists, and Jennifer Thomas picked up four ground balls. Anne Versprille was solid between the pipes, registering 11 saves.

Brit Mscisz led Wellesley with four goals, while Meredith Roy snagged a game-high five draw controls. Claire Canty tallied a goal, an assist, and three draw controls, and Tya Logan was credited with seven saves in the loss.

The Pride netted the first two goals of the game on unassisted strikes from Nielsen and Flanagan in the opening 9:06 of the game.

Mscicz answered 21 seconds after Flanagan’s marker with an unassisted goal of her own before Springfield built a comfortable lead with the game’s next four goals. The Pride took advantage of three free-position goals, including two from Dorsey and another from Flanagan, to go along with a tremendous shot from Gallo that stung the top right corner to own a 6-1 advantage with 6:54 to play. Wellesley tacked on the final goal of the first half, with Mscicz converting a Allison Robbins feed towards the crease with 1:43 on the clock.

Neilsen buried two goals in the first 2:29 of the second half as Springfield’s lead grew to 8-2. However, Wellelsey answered with goals from Roy and Mscisz to creep within four, forcing the Pride into a timeout.

Out of the break, Springfield seized control for good, scoring four unanswered and six of the game’s next seven goals, en route to a 14-5 lead with 5:04 on the clock. Five different players found the back of the cage in the spurt, with Colleen Keeley’s goal capping off the surge.

Mscisz and Robbins sandwiched another Gallo goal in the final 4:30 to wrap up the day’s scoring.

The Prie finished the game with a 30-23 edge in shots, while both team won 12 draws. Springfield committed just eight turnovers in the contest, compared to the Blue’s 16.

Springfield will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday evening when it hosts Connecticut College at 6:00 pm.

Mass. College Lax: Wheaton’s Second Half Surge Lifts Lyons Past Springfield

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women’s lacrosse team erased a 7-3 deficit in the second half with eight unanswered goals to rally past Springfield College, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field in New England Women’s and Men’s Lacrosse (NEWMAC) action. The Lyons earned their first win over the Pride since a 10-9 overtime triumph on March 31, 2007 at home.

Sophomore Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and junior Charlotte De Santis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) tied for the game-high in goals with three apiece. Senior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) added two markers and three draw controls. Moreira now ranks third all-time in program history with 128 draw controls surpassing Alexa Jurczak ’08 who compiled 126 during her career at Wheaton.

Junior Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) added two tallies while freshman Mia Cambi (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) registered one goal and two assists.

Springfield freshman Connie Nielsen (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and sophomore Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) potted markers apiece. Juniors Kerstin Lindrooth (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Academy of the New Church), Emily Fowler (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) all chipped in with one goal.

Down 7-3 with 16:20 remaining in the second half, Cambi sparked the offense as the freshman defender factored into three of the Lyons next four goals. Cambi ripped a feed from De Santis into the back of the net at 14:42 to cut into the deficit at 7-4 and Mills followed with an unassisted tally moments later at 14:09.

Cambi then orchestrated back-to-back markers to even the score at 7-7. Cambi, positioned behind the cage on both goals, led Sharick into a wide open scoring area on both occasions with two passes away from the defense for easy scores. Moreira gave Wheaton the lead for good at the 11:16 mark with her tenth goal of the season on a nice set up from freshman Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy). Sharick pushed the advantage to 9-7 at 6:08, De Santis added an insurance goal at 3:23 and Moreira sealed the victory with the final tally of the game at 1:03.

Lyons’ sophomore goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) turned aside a game-high 11 shots to push her record to 4-2 on the season. Junior Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) made ten saves for the Pride.

Wheaton won the draw controls matchup, 14-6, and outworked Springfield defensively in ground balls (23-22) and clear attempts (15-for-18/13-for-17).

The Lyons (4-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) hosts Gordon College on Thursday, April 4 for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. The Pride (5-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) welcome Babson College to Stagg Field for a NEWMAC tilt on Saturday, April 6 at noon.

Mass. College Lax: Williams Snaps Springfield’s 4-Game Winning Streak

Springfield, Mass. – March 12, 2013 – Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team surrendered the next nine goals to lose for the first time this season to visiting Williams, 9-2, on a rainy Tuesday at Stagg Field.

Williams improves to 2-0, while the Pride drop to 4-1.

Both Michelle Dorsey and Connie Nielsen scored the Pride, while Ellie Getchel had a standout game defensively, causing eight turnovers. Anne Versprille was tested all night between the pipes, making 14 stops for the home squad. The Pride struggled on its clears all night, going just 13-for-28, including just 5-for-14 in the second half.

Williams held a 33-12 advantage in shots, including an 18-3 cushion in the second stanza. Rebecca McGovern led all players with five points on two goals and three helpers. Nancy Palmer, Sam Weinstein, and Emily Whicker each scored twice, while Weinstein caused five turnovers and McGovern won four draws. Ali Piltch needed to make six saves to earn the win.

The Pride opened up a 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of goals 11:43 thanks to a free-position goal from Nielsen and an unassisted strike from Dorsey.

However, Williams closed out the half scoring four unanswered goals to head into the break with a 4-2 advantage. Weinstein kick started the run, scoring after she caused a turnover on a Springfield cleary at 17:32, before Palmer converted on the crease off a great look from McGovern at 14:19.

Goals from Whicker and Bridget Malicki at 5:09 and 2:31 completed the first-half scoring as Williams was able to take advantage of the Pride converting just 8 of its 14 clear attempts.

McGovern continued Williams scoring burst, netting a free position goal just 1:06 into the second stanza. The Ephs put the game away for good with three goals in a 4:44 span as markers from Weinstein, McGovern, and Palmer put the visitors up 8-2 with 12:42 left in regulation. Whicker tacked on the game’s final goal at 4:09.

Springfield will next play when it travels to Florida for Spring Break. The Pride will play Oswego on Sunday at 10:00 am before battling William Smith on Tuesday, March 19.

Mass. College Lax: Springfield Tops Roger Williams, Improves To 4-0

Springfield, Mass. – March 10, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s lacrosse team outscored visiting Roger Williams 12-3 over the final 33:05 of the contest to cruise to a 17-5 victory on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Stagg Field.

The Pride continue one of the finest starts in program history, improving to 4-0 on the year. The Hawks dropped their second straight to fall to 1-2.

Allie Davis led all players with six points on four goals and two assists, while Michelle Dorsey added three goals and an assist to go along with three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Kelly Gallo netted a hat trick and Colleen Keeley recorded a goal and two helpers in the second half. Anne Versprille played just over 47 minutes between the pipes, earning the win as she gave up three goals while making three saves. Carley Elkin made her first collegaite appearance, making two saves in the final 12:24.

The Hawks were led by the duo of Kelsey Rahilly and Kristen Pingree, who each posted three points in the loss. Mackenzie Logan and Danielle Neagle each had three draw controls, and Justine Sullivan made six saves in goal.

Davis had a dominant showing in the opening 30 minutes of play, totaling three goals and two assists for home squad. Springfield opened up a 5-0 advantage in the opening 20:23, using two markers from Davis, and strikes from Dorsey, Meghan Flanagan, and Danielle Kaprielian.

The Hawks scored their first goal of the afternoon after Neagle stuck a shot on the run into the lower corner with 6:08. RWU got within 5-2 on a nice finish from Jessica Searl just 3:08 later, only to have Dorsey and Davis close out the first half scoring to give Springfield a 7-2 advantage heading into the locker room.

Gallo scored just 22 seconds into the second half to jump start a run of seven-straight goals by the Pride to begin the stanza. Rahilly would eventually score the Hawks first goal in nearly 15 minutes on an unassisted strike at the 18:36 mark. Mary Kate Jaeger’s first career goal gave Springfield its largest cushion at 17-3 with 5:31 on the clock, but goals from Rahilly and Pingree in the final 1:46 closed out the afternoon’s scoring.

Springfield will play its final game before heading to Florida for Spring Break when it hosts Williams on Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm.

Mass. College Lax: Springfield’s Second Half Surge Lifts Pride Past ECSU

Springfield, Mass. – February 28, 2013 - The Springfield College women’s lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals in the second half to defeat visiting Eastern Connecticut State, 13-8, on Stagg Field Thursday evening.

It was the season opener for both teams, as the Pride improved to 1-0 and the Warriors dropped to 0-1.

Michelle Dorsey took over the game in the second half, and finished the contest with four points on three goals and a helper to go along with six draw controls. Kelly Gallo added three goals and an assists, while Kerstin Lindrooth added three goals and three draw controls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Anne Versprille made eight saves for the win.

For the Warriors, Daniela Marchitto led the way with four goals and five ground balls. Christina Rully had a goal and an assist, while Rachel Meotti was credited with a team-best four draw controls. Haley Helsin took the loss, making seven saves in the contest.

The Pride held a 30-20 advantage in shots and won 14 of the 23 draw controls.

Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:30 on unassisted strikes from Gallo and Lindrooth. ECSU responded with Marchitto’s first of the year, as she bullied through the Springfield defense before netting a man-down strike at the 20:36 mark.

The Pride strung together two unanswered goals, both from Allie Davis, to gain a three-goal cushion with 16:50 to play. Alexa Foldy slipped in a shot after getting free from behind the cage, only to have Gallo stick a free-position goal with 12:45 on the clock.

Consecutive free-position goals from Marchitto and Taylor Shannon made it one-goal contest with 7:35 left in regulation, but Lindrooth tacked on a free-position goal that found the top left corer as the Pride headed into the half with a 6-4 lead.

The visitors stormed out of the half to even the game at six on goals from Marchitto and Rully with 18:39 left in regulation. After head coach Kristen Mullady called a timeout, Dorsey took control, scoring consecutive strikes, before adding an assist to give the Pride a 9-6 lead at the 15:53 mark.

Lindrooth found the back of the cage for the third time just 25 seconds later as the Pride eventually strung together seven unanswered to take a commanding 13-6. The Warriors tacked on the final two goals of the game to wrap up the five-goal margin for the Pride.

Saturday was a rather busy day for the NESCAC and NEWMAC conferences, as  some squads punched their ticket to the semi-finals or finals, while others watched their season come to an end.

NEWMAC Women’s Lacrosse:

Babson College 24, Wellesley College 12 – The Beavers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, and never looked back, as they punched their ticket to their conference championship for the second consecutive season. Taylor Kralovenec paced Babson with eight goals, while Jameson Spang recorded seven tallies and two assists. Wellesley’s Brit Mscisz led the Blue with six goals.

Springfield College 7, Wheaton College 6 – Michelle Dorsey netted an unassisted strike with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, which lifted Springfield past Wheaton College in Babson Park. Kelly Gallo recorded a hat trick in the win, while goaltender Anne Versprille recorded nine saves. Charlotte DeSantis led the Lyons with three goals and one assist.

NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse:

Tufts 14, Amherst College 10 – Geordie Schafer jumpstarted the Jumbos offense with two tallies, which helped Tufts earn a comfortable, 5-0 lead at 14:06 in the second quarter. The Lord Jeffs stormed back by registering five unanswered strikes before Cole Bailey tallied his second goal of the contest in the fourth, which preserved the victory for Tufts.

NESCAC Women’s Lacrosse:

Middlebury 12, Tufts 8 – Liza Herzog and Michaela Colbert combined for six tallies and one assist, as the Panthers defeated the visiting Jumbos by four goals. Middlebury finished the contest with 24 shots, 17 ground balls, and 14 clears, too. Kerry Eaton paced Tufts with four goals and one assist in the loss.

Amherst 9, Bowdoin College 7 – Despite a back and fourth contest, Amherst managed to pull ahead for good at 9:24 in the second half when Allie Horwitz, (four goals) recorded an unassisted strike, which helped the Lord Jeffs defeat the visiting Polar Bears by two tallies. Amherst ended the match with 18 ground balls, 10 clears and 21 shots.
