Happy Friday to everyone, and welcome into the final Daily Noontime of the week! Let’s kick-off Memorial Day Weekend with some news and headlines!

* The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will begin their three-game series on Friday at Fenway Park – Jon Lester opposes Alex Cobb – first pitch is scheduled for 7:10PM.

* According to various reports – Bobby Valentine strongly believes that if the Sox continue to play the way they’ve played the past 20 games, they’ll win the championship. Boston is 18-12 since blowing a nine run lead to the New York Yankees on April 21, which is the third best record in the American League behind Baltimore (20-10) and Tampa Bay (19-11).  If the Sox continue on this particular path, they’d finish their current campaign with 93 wins.

Happy Tuesday to everyone, and welcome into yet another tremendous edition of the Daily Noontime! Let’s jumpstart the day with some news and headlines from the city of… winners!

* The Boston Bruins earned one-game series lead on Monday, as they defeated the Washington Capitals, 4-3. Zdeno Chara netted the game-winning goal late in the third period, while Tim Thomas deflected 29 shots between the pipes.

* Boston will attempt to earn a two-game lead on Thursday when they return to the ice for Game No. 4. The last time the Bruins led a series 2-1 was against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals, which Boston won.

* According to reports – Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom received a “match penalty” at the end of Game No. 3 on Monday, which means he’ll most likely miss the fourth game of this particular series. Also, the league will now have to review the play, too.

* Boston and Tampa Bay concluded their four-game series on Monday, and sadly, the Red Sox didn’t record a sweep, as Sean Rodriguez scored the only run of the day for the Rays. Daniel Bard lasted six and two-thirds innings, and managed to fan seven batters. However, Bard’s only mistake was allowing Rodriguez to score after walking Evan Longoria in the seventh inning.

* The Red Sox will look to snap their one-game losing streak on Tuesday when they welcome the Texas Rangers to Fenway Park — first pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm – Jon Lester opposes Colby Lewis.

* The Boston Celtics will look to earn their third consecutive victory on Tuesday when they travel to New York to face the Knicks — tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.

* Finally, Wesley Koir and Sharon Cherop won the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday.

* The Boston Bruins began their Stanley Cup title defense on Thursday with a 1-0 overtime win against the Washington Capitals. Chris Kelly notched the game-winner, while Tim Thomas turned away 17 shots. Boston and Washington will return to the ice for Game No. 2 on Saturday at the TD Garden.

* Against Washington in Game No. 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals – Boston’s 2011 power play woes continued, as the Bruins ended the game 0-for-4. The Bruins somehow managed to win the Cup last season with an awful power play, but Claude Julien knows that particular unit needs to improve.

* The Boston Red Sox will play their home opener on Friday, as they welcome Tampa Bay to Fenway Park. The Sox enter the contest with a 1-5 record, while the Rays are 4-2 and tied atop the AL East with the Toronto Blue Jays.

* The Boston Celtics will look to build off their two most recent victories against Atlanta and Miami on Friday when they travel to Toronto for a 7:00pm tip-off. The Green and White have eight contests remaining, and five of those games will be played on the road.

The 2012 Boston Red Sox–An Obituary

By Andy Lindberg

The Boston Red Sox suck spectacularly.  A day after being shut out by Detroit 10-0, the Red Sox came back with a furious vengeance and scored 12 runs on April 8.

The only problem was Detroit scored 13.

Last year I distinctly remember saying April was too early to push the panic button.  The Red Sox would be ok.  For a while, the Red Sox were ok.  They were better than ok.  For about four months, the 2011 Red Sox were the best team in baseball until September, when they were the worst.

The 2012 Red Sox seem to have liked the 2011 September suckers.  Twice on Easter Sunday, 2012, the Red Sox bullpen gave up leads.  Alfredo Aceves could not record an out in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead, blowing the save with a Miguel Cabrera big fly.  After saying on Friday he felt the hook came too quickly, Mark Melancon, out to redeem himself, gave up a walk-off home run to Detroit catcher Alex Avila, who provided the hook for him so Bobby Valentine wouldn’t have to bother walking out to the mound.

How generous of you, Mr. Avila.

The Red Sox cannot win with pitching like this.  I’ve seen enough.  Boston fans have seen enough.  Stick a fork in them.  They’re done three games into the season.  The loss of Andrew Bailey has seemingly turned into the loss of this season.  Our former All-Star closer-in-waiting has become a starting pitcher in Daniel Bard.  In the chess game that is pitching matchups and bullpen pieces, the Red Sox have knocked over their king.  The Red Sox have yet again started the season by being swept by a good team, a team Boston desperately needed to beat.  The only bright spot in the pitching came in the Opener, when Jon Lester pitched seven innings of one-run ball, only to have the misfortune of being matched up against Justin Verlander.  When Boston came back and tied the game off of Jose Valverde in the ninth, Melancon came in during the bottom half of the same inning, allowed two base-runners, yielded the ball to Aceves, and saw Austin Jackson hit a walk-off single.

I’m as sick of writing about them as you are of reading about them.  This week Boston plays three games at Toronto and then come back to Fenway for four games against Tampa Bay, who just lit up the New York Yankees, sweeping the Bombers to start the year.

And on a side note, I hate saying this, but part of me hopes Bard gets lit up in his first two starts or so and runs to Valentine, begging Bobby V to insert him into the bullpen as Boston’s closer in Bailey’s absence.

The sharp swagger we’ve been used to seeing from the Red Sox pitching staff is gone, faded and sanded like the edges of ancient sea-glass on a beach.  Now all Sox fans can do is hope one day management wakes up and realizes the team is lost in these huge-market signings, and will once again stock up the farm system to the glorious system that produced so many All Stars earlier in the decade.  I love the Red Sox with every ounce of my being, but Sox fans are watching the beginnings of a massacre in Boston right now, and there’s still 159 more games to go…

Happy Monday everyone, and welcome into a brand new edition of the Daily Noontime! Here are some headlines and news swirling around the city of Boston.

* Literally one day after the Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine announced that his team would ban beer in the clubhouse, Tampa Bay Rays skipper Joe Maddon lashed out by telling the press that his ball club would be allowed to enjoy an “adult beverage” in their club house. Maddon also told the Tampa Bay Times that the Rays are not the Red Sox. So, with all of this being said, should we consider this motivation for Boston to beat Tampa Bay this year?

* Monday will certainly be a busy day for the Boston Bruins, who’ll attempt to initiate a trade before the NHL deadline concludes in the afternoon. Boston could certainly use some help at the wing position, especially since Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley are currently sidelined with injuries. The Bruins concluded their more recent six-game swing with a 3-2-1 record, and will return to the ice on Tuesday evening when they welcome the Ottawa Senators to the TD Garden for a 7:00pm face-off.

* The Boston Celtics will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Tuesday when they travel to Cleveland for a 7:00pm tip-off against the Cavaliers. The Green and White are currently ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference, and on-par to make the playoffs. However, Cleveland, who is ranked ninth in the conference, is one-and-half games behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot.
