It’s a brand new week, which means we need to kick-start it with some news and headlines from the sports universe in Massachusetts…Boston!

* There will be a Game Seven on Wednesday, as the Boston Bruins won their second overtime contest against the Washington Capitals on Sunday, 4-3. Tyler Seguin registered the game-winning goal and assist, while Tim Thomas saved 36 of 39 shots between the pipes.

* Boston and Washington will complete their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series on Wednesday at the TD Garden – time is TBD.

* The Boston Red Sox third contest with the New York Yankees was postponed on Sunday due to heavy rain. The Sox are currently 4-10, and haven’t recorded a win since they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, Apr. 15.

* The Sox will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Monday when they travel to Minnesota for an 8:10pm first pitch – Jon Lester will oppose Jason Marquis.

* Despite no Sunday Night Baseball — former Red Sox manager Terry Francona expressed his thoughts on returning to Fenway Park on Friday to celebrate Fenway Park’s 100th birthday.

* Finally, the Boston Celtics have learned that their first round playoff foe will be the Atlanta Hawks. Boston clinched their third consecutive Atlantic Division last week against Orlando, but currently remain one game behind Atlanta for home-court advantage. Boston has two games remaining in the regular season against Miami and Milwaukee.

Washington’s Braden Holtby deflected 44 of 45 shots between the pipes, and yielded one Boston goal, as the Capitals defeated the Bruins at the Verizon Center, 2-1.

Boston and Washington have now won two contests — both at home and on the road — and will play at least two more contests.

Marcus Johansson and Alexander Semin provided Washington with two goals, while Rich Peverley notched Boston’s only strike in the first period.

Tim Thomas concluded the game with 19 saves, too.

Boston’s power play woes continued, as they ended the contest 0 for 1, while Washington recorded a power play at 18:43 in the second period.

Both teams will return to the ice on Saturday afternoon, as Boston will host Washington for a critical fifth game of the series. Last year, Boston won the fifth game of their opening round series against Montreal, and wound up defeating the Canadiens in seven games.

What will happen this year? Thoughts? Ideas? Analysis? Feel free to post your comments about this particular series below!

Happy Tuesday to everyone, and welcome into yet another tremendous edition of the Daily Noontime! Let’s jumpstart the day with some news and headlines from the city of… winners!

* The Boston Bruins earned one-game series lead on Monday, as they defeated the Washington Capitals, 4-3. Zdeno Chara netted the game-winning goal late in the third period, while Tim Thomas deflected 29 shots between the pipes.

* Boston will attempt to earn a two-game lead on Thursday when they return to the ice for Game No. 4. The last time the Bruins led a series 2-1 was against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals, which Boston won.

* According to reports – Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom received a “match penalty” at the end of Game No. 3 on Monday, which means he’ll most likely miss the fourth game of this particular series. Also, the league will now have to review the play, too.

* Boston and Tampa Bay concluded their four-game series on Monday, and sadly, the Red Sox didn’t record a sweep, as Sean Rodriguez scored the only run of the day for the Rays. Daniel Bard lasted six and two-thirds innings, and managed to fan seven batters. However, Bard’s only mistake was allowing Rodriguez to score after walking Evan Longoria in the seventh inning.

* The Red Sox will look to snap their one-game losing streak on Tuesday when they welcome the Texas Rangers to Fenway Park — first pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm – Jon Lester opposes Colby Lewis.

* The Boston Celtics will look to earn their third consecutive victory on Tuesday when they travel to New York to face the Knicks — tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.

* Finally, Wesley Koir and Sharon Cherop won the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday.

Two games, two overtime thrillers. And what started, as a best of seven is now a best of five.

On Saturday afternoon, Nicklas Backstrom scored early in double-OT to give the Capitals a 2-1 victory over the Bruins. The Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series is tied at a game apiece.

Game 3 is Monday night at the Verizon Center.

How the game was won: The Caps won a faceoff in the offensive zone.  Backstrom ended up with it in the left faceoff circle and wristed it past Tim Thomas for the game-winner.

As even as it gets: Through two games, each team has one win. Each team has scored two goals. Each team has scored one overtime goal. Both goaltenders have been stellar, with an edge to the Caps’ Braden Holtby (72 saves in the series.)

Other notes:

Thomas’ postseason shutout streak ended at 161 minutes, 41 seconds, as Troy Brouwer scored in the second frame. Thomas hadn’t allowed a goal since Game 6 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

It’s Friday, which means… it’s time to break into song and dance! However, before we do that, let’s kick-start the final work day with some headlines and news from the city of champions…Boston!

* The Boston Bruins began their Stanley Cup title defense on Thursday with a 1-0 overtime win against the Washington Capitals. Chris Kelly notched the game-winner, while Tim Thomas turned away 17 shots. Boston and Washington will return to the ice for Game No. 2 on Saturday at the TD Garden.

* Against Washington in Game No. 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals – Boston’s 2011 power play woes continued, as the Bruins ended the game 0-for-4. The Bruins somehow managed to win the Cup last season with an awful power play, but Claude Julien knows that particular unit needs to improve.

* The Boston Red Sox will play their home opener on Friday, as they welcome Tampa Bay to Fenway Park. The Sox enter the contest with a 1-5 record, while the Rays are 4-2 and tied atop the AL East with the Toronto Blue Jays.

* The Boston Celtics will look to build off their two most recent victories against Atlanta and Miami on Friday when they travel to Toronto for a 7:00pm tip-off. The Green and White have eight contests remaining, and five of those games will be played on the road.

The Boston Bruins began their Stanley Cup title defense on Thursday against the Washington Capitals with an overtime clincher by Chris Kelly.

Kelly raced down the ice early in the extra session, and whipped a shot past Washington goaltender Braden Holtby, (29 saves) for the game-winning goal.

Boston now leads their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series, 1-0, and will return to the ice for Game No. 2 on Saturday.

Here are some observations and thoughts from Boston’s first playoff contest.

How the game was won: Boston needed three periods and 1:18 in overtime to net their only strike of the contest, as Benoit Poulio and Brian Rolston connected with Kelly, who then deposited the puck past Holtby for the score a few seconds later.

Washington had numerous chances in the third period to light the lamp, but Tim Thomas, (17 saves) deflected all nine shots, which helped Boston force overtime.

Props to Holtby: Washington’s netminder was certainly the player of the game.

Holtby earned some “brownie points” midway through the second session when Boston experienced a 4-on-3 power play. The 22-year-old netminder kept his composure, and managed to deflect a handful of Bruins shots, which didn’t exactly jumpstart the Capitals offense.

Boston’s offense recorded 17 shots in the second frame, but again, couldn’t muster a goal. They also tallied nine shots on Holtby’s cage in the first period, and three in the third.

Boston’s Power Play: Similar to last season, the Boston Bruins struggled immensely on the power play.

Boston endured four power plays on Thursday, but didn’t muster a single goal with the extra skater, while Washington ended the game 0-for-2.

Other Notes:

* Boston managed to win 33 of 65 face-offs, and also recorded 40 hits.

* The last time a Boston playoff team went into overtime tied, 0-0 was on May 12, 1995. New Jersey defeated the local hockey club, 1-0 in the extra session, and wound up winning that particular series, too.

* The last time Boston led a quarterfinal series, 1-0 was in 2009 against Montreal.

* Tyler Seguin paced Boston’s offense with five shots on net, while Nicklas Backstrom led Washington with three.

It’s Friday, and while we don’t need to break out into song and dance, let’s instead dish out some headlines and news from the Hub!

* Despite rallying to tie the game, Washington’s Brooks Laich netted the game winning shootout goal, which helped the Capitals defeat the Boston Bruins on Thursday, 3-2. Tim Thomas recorded 21 saves between the pipes, and held Washington scoreless for the first two frames. Had Boston won, they would have clinched a playoff spot, but luckily, the Black and Gold will return to the ice on Saturday when they travel to Long Island to face the New York Islanders.

Bobby Valentine told the media on Thursday that he’s expecting Carl Crawford to begin the season on a rehab assignment. The left fielder underwent wrist surgery this past offseason, and has taken part in bunting drills with the team. However, Valentine doesn’t believe he’ll be able to face living pitching until he possibly experiences “50 at-bats somewhere.”

* The Boston Celtics will return to the hardwood on Friday when they travel to Minnesota to face the Timberwolves. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.

* Celtics President Danny Ainge made his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio WEEI on Thursday, and told The Big Show that he’s not planning on forcing Mickael Pietrus to get back on the court. He’s expected to return to the lineup soon, but according to reports, the Celtics should have more information on his concussion he sustained last week in Philadelphia.

Daily Noontime – March 28, 2012

By NoontimeSports.com

Happy “hump day” to everyone, and welcome into another grand edition of the Daily Noontime! Let’s get this day started with some headlines and news from the “Hub.”

* The Boston Bruins earned their third consecutive victory on Tuesday at the TD Garden, as they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-2. The win avenges a previous loss, which saw the Lightning destroy the Bruins, 6-1. Five different Bruins netted one goal, while Tim Thomas recorded 16 saves between the pipes. Boston will return to the ice on Thursday when they host the Washington Capitals.

* With the win on Tuesday, Boston has padded their lead in the Northeast standings. The Bruins have won six more games than Ottawa currently, and are also locked in the second seed in the Eastern Conference, too. A few more wins would most likely secure the Black and Gold a playoff spot, and a division championship.

* The UMass men’s basketball team fell short against Stanford on Tuesday, as the Cardinals defeated the Minutemen, 74-64 in the NIT Final Four.

* The Boston Celtics will look to earn their third consecutive victory on Wednesday, as they’ll host the Utah Jazz at 7:30pm. A win against a Western Conference playoff team would be a huge boost for the Green and White, who remains a half a game behind Philadelphia in the Atlantic standings.

* Finally, the Boston Red Sox announced on Tuesday that Jose Iglesias was sent down to Pawtucket, which is most likely where he’ll begin the 2012 season.

Happy Friday to everyone, and welcome into yet another outstanding rendition of the Daily Noontime! Let’s kick-start the final work day with some news and headlines from the city we like to call, “The Hub.”

* The Boston Bruins losing streak extended to four games, as the Florida Panthers defeated the Black and Gold, 6-2. Joe Corvo brought the team to within one strike, as he netted his team’s first goal at 4:53 in the second frame, but the Panthers regrouped and went onto score four more goals. Tim Thomas deflected 23 shots, while Boston finished the contest 1-for-2 on the power play. The Bruins will return home on Saturday when they face-off against the Philadelphia Flyers at 1:00pm.

* Sources confirmed on Thursday that the Bruins have indeed inked another goaltender’s name to their roster, as Boston acquired Adam Morrison of the Vancouver Giants

* The NBA Trade Deadline came and went on Thursday, and well, the Boston Celtics didn’t exactly make any moves. President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge confirmed on WEEI-93.7FM/850AM that the Green and White were not planning on trading Rajon Rondo despite receiving various calls about the highly touted point guard. Boston will return to the hardwood on Friday evening when they tip-off against Sacramento at 10:00pm.

* Finally, Harvard University’s men’s basketball team exited the March Madness tournament earlier than expected, as Vanderbilt University defeated the Crimson, 79-70.

By NoontimeSports.com

Happy Wednesday to everyone! Let’s get the day started with some headlines and news from Boston and New England!

* The Boston Bruins trailed Tampa Bay by four goals after one period, and never recovered, as the Lightning beat-up the Black and Gold on Tuesday, 6-1. Jordan Caron netted the only goal for Boston, while Marty Turco and Tim Thomas combined for 11 saves between the pipes. Boston is currently 1-3 in their last four contests, and will attempt to end their three-game skid on Thursday when they face-off against Florida.

* Sources confirmed that the New England Patriots are working toward finalizing a deal with wide receiver Matthew Slater, which should be completed by Wednesday. Also, there is no news on Wes Welker‘s contract, but it’s possible that due to various free agent signings, he’ll be asking for a decent amount of money.

* The Boston Celtics will return to the hardwood on Wednesday evening when they tip-off against the Golden State Warriors. Boston is 1-1 on their current eight-game road swing, and have won three of their last five matches.

* UMass’ men’s basketball team earned a first round NIT victory against Mississippi State on Tuesday, 101-96 in double overtime. The Minutemen will return to the hardwood on Thursday when they take on Seton Hall.

* Finally, the Boston Red Sox picked up their seventh win in the Grapefruit League on Tuesday, as they defeated the New York Yankees, 1-0.
