The Return of Brett Favre

Another Year of Brett Favre Saga... Oh Boy!

Another Year of Brett Favre Saga... Oh Boy!

Let me begin by asking the most important question of the day…are you tired of this nonsense? I mean lets be honest, Brett Favre cannot make up his mind! He is like a five-year old in a toy store… “Do I want this toy or that one?”

Favre should have remained retired and he knows it too!

Being a New England Patriots fan, I was so frustrated when the New York Jets came into Gillette Stadium last November and squeaked by with an overtime win, which was typical Favre. I was at that game and quite honestly it was exciting, but just hurt so much when the men dressed in green and white ran off the field in celebration. Yet that was really the last hurrah for the Jets and Favre following a win the next week against Tennessee. Afterward the Jets and their aging quarterback skidded to the finish line, losing four of their last five games. Favre’s number dipped dramatically and especially when he fell apart in their final contest of the season against the Miami Dolphins. Instead of being the quarterback that we all used to love watching, he just continued to exhibit his downfall and exemplify the point that he needed to retire and leave behind the game he loves pronto.

Now 2009’s NFL season is just weeks away. Michael Vick is back and oh wait… who is that scruffy looking guy? He has some grey hair even! Oh no… not again, yes… Brett Favre is back in the league and this time out for revenge! Who cares if he threw the Jets final game because he always had Green Bay on his mind throughout the entire 2008 season? Who cares if he threw the ball 522 times and had 22 interceptions? Who gives a hoot if Favre just wants to come back and shove it down Green Bay’s throat? Do you? Do I?

Favre is back again and am I surprised, no… not really. I knew this was going to happen, I knew he would play, and I knew that the Vikings was where he belonged. Besides, lets all just say he is back so he can get what he wants, which is payback against his former team. He wanted to go to Minnesota in 2008, but that didn’t happen. He could not make up his mind this summer about returning for one more chance at holding a Lombardi, but yet some how good fortune, luck, the stars, or just the Minnesota front office finally maneuvered a way to get Brett to join the “Purple People Eaters!”

Will he make this team better? Probably! In fact, I guess you can say they are currently a front-runner for possibly representing the NFC in Miami next February, but only if Favre can remain consistent. He will be playing 10-games indoors this fall, which should not have any affect for throwing or running the ball. Favre has better receivers with the Vikings compared to the Jets last year, which is an upgrade and how could I not forget, an elite running back by the name of Adrian Peterson. This will indeed be his last stint in the NFL and let me say, I cannot wait to watch Favre take on the Packers on October 5th and November 1st.

Overall, I am sure this will be another interesting season with Favre back, but can he all just do us a favor, win or lose, call it quits once the Vikings season is done!

Michael Vick an Eagle? Does this make ANY sense?

Vick an Eagle? Does this make sense?

Vick an Eagle? Does this make sense?

It was roughly the same time last year, same spot, same topic… football. I was sitting at my kitchen table on a warm mid-August afternoon contemplating various job locations for Chad Pennington to pop a resume in for the 2008 season. Yet this year it’s a little different because now I get to write about Michael Vick.

Vick, you say? Hasn’t that guy been in the news every day? Well of course he has, but lately the news is telling me he has found a team!

Michael Vick is a Philadelphia Eagle everyone and lets just say all together, “why?” I mean it, why would Vick join the Eagles? Does this seem logical and the appropriate place for him to be this upcoming football season? I certainly believe not!

The Eagles as many of you know are a very talented and competitive football team that always seems to leave the gates slow in September, but turns up the notch when November and December roll around. They are a team known for their crucifying defense, fast paced offense and of course great coaching staff. They have a quarterback named Donovan McNabb who probably irritates you as much as your mother-in-law or that Miss Goodie Too Shoes who has to answer every single question in class. But now, they have a problem. Houston… what do we do?

Michael Vick as quarterback? Nope! Michael Vick as running back? Have one of those at the moment. Michael Vick as an offensive lineman? He is somewhat small for the position. How about as a receiver? Possibly.  Cornerback? Sure. Punt returner? Have one of those too. How about as a motivator? That does not seem fitting. Intern? Of course! No, he will be more than just a guy who goes on the coffee and doughnut run, but really, where does this guy fit in?

There may not be an answer as of now or maybe Andy Reid has decided he will use his quarterbacks like Tom Landry did during most of the 1971 Super Bowl season, as a starting pitcher and closer. Yet that did cause some controversy in the lone star state, so what would you do? Would you keep Vick as a back-up quarterback? Assign him to the practice squad or even just have him take part in this so-called “WILD-CAT” offense, which is made for the college game. Either way it is not definite or determined what position Vick will play, but I am sure you can start by saying he will be sporting a number 7 jersey in green this October when he is officially done paying back his debt to the NFL.

My Michael Vick Saga

Thank You Michael Vick... You Ruined My Day!

Thank You Michael Vick... You Ruined My Day!

Before you indulge yourself with my wonderful and in-depth thoughts regarding Michael Vick, allow me to explain that the past 24-hours of Vick talk has just been out of control. Was he in New England, at Logan Airport or at his bankruptcy hearing yesterday? These questions were what drove me throughout my entire last day of July 2009. Did I enjoy all the speculation, yes indeed, but once you read my story, I think you will all realize why I am enjoying a restful Saturday afternoon.

Here is my story:

(FRIDAY, July 31, 2009): Rumors! Speculation! Chaos! Those would be the exact words to describe what occurred throughout the last 15-hours of my final day in July. Hmm… Are you saying the MLB Trade Rumors drove me crazy? No, not at all…well maybe a little bit, but I am talking about something more drastic… dramatic… trying to decipher the question, which is… (DUN DUN DUN) was Michael Vick indeed in Foxborough, Massachusetts at all today?

My search began earlier this morning when I came across an interesting post on Craig’s-List from a person who claimed to have seen Vick sitting in business class, which happened to be the section they were in too. Wait, wait, wait… hold everything. Vick in business class and on a commercial airline sounds somewhat fishy to me, right?

Whether or not this statement was true led me to investigate this post and try to uncover the actual question of was Vick in Boston for the weekend? Trust me, this was not at all like trying to snag Carmon Sandiego! Every story I discovered continued to feature the illustrious AP quote, which was describing Vick as someone who was    “close to signing with a team,” except it never mentioned what specific squad. That is somewhat important, hinting the reader on what team and uniform number he will be wearing, just a quick thought!

As my morning continued, both the Seattle papers and Yahoo Sports seemed to believe that the team, which Michael Vick had mentioned he was going to become a member of was infact Jim Mora Jr.’s new squad, the Seattle Seahawks.

Yet, Seattle seemed to be erased by the afternoon when I discovered rumors through Profootball.com, which linked to a few stories saying Vick was and was not at Gillette Stadium for the Patriots afternoon training camp session. These rumors allowed me to breath easier and realize that Vick was not a Patriot today, which allowed me to switch gears to the MLB trading deadline.

Checking back a little after 4pm, I came across a story by the Miami Herald that stated Vick was officially on the practice field. Hold everything, I should call the press, but once again was this indeed the actual truth? Everything seemed to get crazier from this moment.

Actually I was so fascinated by this crazy, out of this world, and unfathomable idea regarding Vick that I wrote a question on my Facebook page, which stated: “So Michael Vick, according to a few sources was on the practice field this afternoon at Gillette?” Posing this question was just another chapter in my Vick day, which was followed by a post 2 minutes later from a friend who wrote, “comma splice.” More comments were posted, but eventually I came to realize that after posting my question this report was false, which is when I wrote underneath the other various posts the following: “Who knows how true this actually is because it seems that Vick is in Virginia, according to other sources, plus wouldn’t the media be all over this story? It would be up there with the trade deadline!”

As the sun began to dip and Friday afternoon became Friday evening, I finally came across the answer that I had been looking for, (DRUM ROLL PLEASE), he was not and doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to being a New England Patriot. Vick wasn’t even in New England; instead he was still in Virginia.

Okay, okay, okay… laugh all you want, make fun of me, joke with your friends that good old Noontime checked a variety of sources, blogs, and made some calls to decipher this mystery. I may not be anywhere close to Sherlock Holmes, Encyclopedia Brown or those annoying Hardy Boy’s, but what I learned was following a story can teach one a lesson. I love blogging and reporting for my college newspaper, but sometimes my father’s liberal advice comes in handy when thinking about an actual answer and decoding the facts, “measure twice, cut once.”
