WORCESTER, MA — The Wheaton College women’s basketball team earned a lead late in the first half and never looked back, as the Lyons defeated the WPI Engineers, 53-39.
With the win, the Lyons improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers fall to 3-3 and 1-2.
Melissa McLaughlin paced Wheaton with 17 points, while Abbie Brickley netted 10 points and recorded seven rebounds.
WPI was led by Dani Davis , who netted 10 points, while Rachel Pineda scored nine and Kelly Morgan added eight.
Wheaton connected on 18-of-56 shots, sank six three-pointers, and converted 11-of-16 free throws. The Lyons secured 19 offensive rebonds, but totaled 48. WPI completed 15-of-47 shots from the field and went 6-of-8 from the stripe.
Both teams will return to the hardwood on Friday when Wheaton hosts Babson College and WPI travels to Springfield College. Both contests are slated for 7:00 p.m. tip-offs.
