Mass. College Hoops: WACBA Weekly Report (Jan. 21-27)

Another week of college basketball in Worcester is in the books, and below is this week’s WACBA Players of the Week and Honor Roll.

Men’s Player of the Week: Ryan Sheehan (Nichols College) Jr., Forward, North Attleboro, MA: This week’s Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week averaged 38 points in a 2-0 week for the Bison. He tallied 38 points in 38 minutes against Curry College in a come-from-behind victory, as well as 38 points against Western New England College three days later. Sheehan started the week No. 9 in the nation in scoring at 23.6 points per game, and moved into eighth-place-all-time in scoring at Nichols with 1,417 points.

Women’s Player of the Week: Meaghan O’Keefe (Worcester State) Sr., Forward, Warren, MA: O’Keefe averaged 15 points and 14.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Lancers. She recorded a game-high 24 points and 15 caroms in a 65-58 victory against Salem State.

Honor Roll:

Alex Smith (Holy Cross) Jr., Guard, Delran, NJ: Smith finished the 1-1 week with 29 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists, four steals and one block. Against Lafayette, she tallied 12 points and a game-best six assists. Smith led all scorers with 17 points against Bucknell, as well as tied for a game-high with seven rebounds. Smith has registered double digits in 18 of 20 games this season, and leads her squad and Patriot League with 14.6 points per game.

Kevin Donahue (Assumption College) Gr., Guard, Pawcatuck, CT: In two games this past week, Donahue averaged 18.5 points, two rebounds, one assists and one steal. He also shot 47.8 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent from the stripe.

Katy Howard (Assumption College) Sr., Guard, Medway, MA: Howard averaged 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals in two games last week for the Hounds. Against Franklin Pierce, the Medway native tallied 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. She recorded 25 points against UMass Lowell on Saturday and moved within 11 points of the 1,000-point mark for her career.  

Javier Bristol (Anna Maria) Sr., Forward, Haverhill, MA: In a 3-0 week for the AMCATS, Bristol averaged 17.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. He shot 67.7 percent from the floor, too. Against Albertus Magnus, Bristol was a perfect 6 of 6 from the field (13 points, four rebounds). He recorded a double-double against Emerson College with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and netted a game-high 25 points with nine rebounds against Johnson & Wales.    

Marco Coppola (WPI) Soph., Guard, Watertown, MA: Coppola sank a career-best five triples and recorded a game-high 23 points against Springfield College in WPI’s last outing.

Kyle Ferreira (Worcester State) Sr., Guard, Westport, MA: In a 1-1 week, Ferreira averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He netted a career-best 27 points with five rebounds in an 81-76 triumph over Framingham State and 16 points and seven assists in a 78-74 setback against Salem State.
