Courtesy of our friends from the Nichols College sports information department, here’s this evening’s press release from the men’s ice hockey game against Suffolk University, which saw the Bison earn an important two-goal victory against the Rams:

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Nine different Nichols College men’s ice hockey student-athletes recorded a point as the Bison defeated visiting Suffolk, 3-1, on Wednesday night in an ECAC Northeast game at Levy Rink. With the win, Nichols continues a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) and notches the most victories since the 2008-09 season with a 14-7-1 overall record and 7-3-1 ledger in the league. The Rams slip to 6-11-5 on the year and 3-5-3 in the ECAC Northeast.

Senior captain Wil Brown (Hershey, Pa.) skated in his 100th consecutive game overall and 75th in a Nichols sweater. The three-year Bison began his streak in Lebanon Valley College’s season-opener on October 23, 2009.

“Playing in 100 games has been a goal of mine since I began college,” remarked Brown upon being notified of the milestone.

Nichols first-year Sean Fleming (Eastampton, N.J.) started the night off with his first collegiate goal midway through the first period. Sophomores Mike Schwartz (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) each had a stick in the scoring opportunity at 10:32. With 1:54 left in the frame, Suffolk rookie Mike Cherpark (Enfield, Conn.) snuck the puck past the goaltender’s shoulder with help from junior Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa.) to even the game at 1-1. Nichols claimed a 15-10 advantage on shots as both teams had one power play chance in the stanza.

The Bison potted a pair of second period goals 1:32 apart to build a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio) knocked home a pass from first-year Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) at 10:47 before senior Zach Kohn (Delafield, Wis.) and sophomore Chris Gularte (Salinas, Calif.) created a chance for rookie Daniel Bufis (Linden, N.J.)at 12:19. Junior Josh DeLoach (Tampa, Fla.) was also credited with a helper on Sposit’s tally. Nichols outshot the visitors 12-6 in the period as each team went 0-for-1 with extra personnel.

Neither team found the back of the net in a third period that saw the Bison take 16 of the 23 shots and have a trio of power play chances. Suffolk went 0-for-1 in the final frame.

The game was played as part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s (SAAC) winter “Play For a Cure” week. Each season, SAAC and the Nichols athletic teams combine efforts to help raise awareness about a disease or particular issue that affects the Nichols community. The theme this winter is stomach cancer. Nichols student-athletes and game staff, as well as the officials donned periwinkle stick-on ribbons. The contest also featured a ceremonial puck drop prior to the contest.

Both squads are back on the ice on Saturday. Nichols travels to Curry for a 4:35 p.m. game while Suffolk heads to city-rival Wentworth at 4:10 p.m.
