Mass. College Hoops: Assumption Tops AIC, Earns 20-Win Season


Courtesy of the Assumption College sports information department, here’s this evening’s release on the women’s basketball team, who defeated American International College (AIC) and earned their 20th win of the season:

Worcester, Mass. (February 26) — Assumption jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and pushed that lead up to as many 21 in the opening period as the Hounds pulled away in the second for a comfortable 64-49 victory over American International on Senior Night. Assumption is receiving votes in the USA Today Sports Division II National Poll for the 11th straight week.

Prior to the game, the women’s basketball honored seniors Courtney Donovan (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Bourne)Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y.)Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway)Sabrina Siciliano (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) and Marissa Velez (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) for their contributions to the Assumption College women’s basketball program during their careers.

In the opening minutes, the Hounds jumped out to a 10-2 advantage and pushed that lead in double digits for the first time at 18-8 with 10:31 left in the first on a jumper from Siciliano. A 13-2 run by the Hounds, capped by a jumper from the top of the key by sophomore Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South), pushed the lead to 31-10 with 6:38 on the clock. Four straight AIC points, including a hoop from Krista Ferrertino, sent the game into the half at 35-19 in favor of the Greyhounds as Assumption shot 40 percent in the period. Early in the period, Gibson moved into third on the Assumption all-time scoring list, passing Katie Kerr ’00 at 1,529 career points.

In the second half, it was all Assumption as the Hounds led by as many as 23 points before a late Yellow Jacket run closed it to a 64-49 final as the Hounds ran their winning streak to six straight.

Velez scored a career-high 15 points, along with 12 from Gibson as she ended the game with 1,541 points. Ferrentino led three Yellow Jackets in double figures with an 18-point showing.

The Hounds complete the regular season at 20-6 overall and 17-5 in Northeast-10 play and earned the No. 3 seed in the Northeast-10 Tournament. The 20-win season is the sixth all-time for the Assumption women’s program, all of which have come under the direction of 17th-year head coach Kerry Phayre.

Assumption returns to action in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals as the Hounds will host No. 6 seeded University of New Haven on Sunday, March 3rd at Laska Gym beginning at 2 p.m. That will game will be available live online at with Roei Biberstain calling all the action from Worcester.
