Mass. College Hockey: Five Local Squads Earn Sports In Hockey East Quarterfinals

Five local Hockey East squads secured spots in the 29th annual Hockey East Tournament, which begins this Thursday when the top-seeded UMass Lowell River Hawks host Maine at the Tsongas Center.

The winners of each first round series, which are best of three, will advance to the conference’s semifinals on Friday, March 23 at the TD Garden. The championship will be played the following day.

The two non-Massachusetts schools that’ll also be competing this weekend are New Hampshire and Providence College.

Below are the local squads’ first round schedules:

No. 1 UMass Lowell vs. No. 8 Maine

* Thursday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. @ Tsongas Center

* Friday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. @ Tsongas Center  

* Sunday, March 17 TBA @ Tsongas Center (IF NEEDED)

No. 2 Boston College vs. No. 7 Vermont

* Friday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. @ Kelley Rink

* Saturday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. @ Kelley Rink

* Sunday, March 17 TBA @ 4:30 p.m. (IF NEEDED)

No. 3 Boston University vs. No. 6 Merrimack College

* Friday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. @ Agganis Arena

* Saturday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. @ Agganis Arena

* Sunday, March 17 TBA @ Agganis Arena
