WALTHAM, Mass. – Two-time defending regional champion Bentley University, after achieving a three-peat as Northeast-10 Conference regular season and playoff champions, will host the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball East Regional this coming weekend. It’ll be the third straight year that the eight-team regional will be held at Bentley’s Dana Center.
Bentley is the number one seed and will face eighth-seeded LIU Post (19-9) in the first round on Friday, an at-large selection out of the East Coast Conference.
Bentley, 28-1 and ranked number three in the latest USA Today Sports Division II coaches poll, is one of three automatic qualifiers with the others being third-seeded Dowling College (25-3), which earned the ECC title, and fourth-seeded Holy Family University (27-2), champion of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
The at-large selections include three Northeast-10 teams: second-seeded Stonehill College (23-4), fifth-seeded Assumption College (22-7), and seventh-seeded Franklin Pierce University (18-10). Rounding out the field will be the sixth-seeded New York Institute of Technology (23-5), which will be making its first ever appearance in the NCAA field.
Play will get underway at noon Friday with Dowling and New York Tech facing off in a rematch of today’s ECC final, won by the third-seeded Golden Lions, 72-49. Stonehill and Franklin Pierce will follow at 2:30 pm.
Bentley and LIU Post will launch the evening session at 6 pm as they meet in the first round for the second time in three seasons. Capping off the first day action will be an 8:30 encounter between Assumption and Holy Family.
The semis will be Saturday evening and the regional championship game will be Monday at 7 pm.
Bentley, which owns 12 regional titles since 1989, will be making its record 30th appearance in the NCAA tournament and its seventh straight. Holy Family has the longest streak of appearances (10) and Franklin Pierce is back for the sixth consecutive year.
The winner of the Regional will advance to the Elite Eight in San Antonio March 26-29.
