Worcester, Mass. (April 13) — On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men’s lacrosse team held off a late Bentley University rally for a 7-6 victory over the Falcons on Senior Day at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is just the second Assumption win over the Falcons in the all-time series.

Prior to the game, seniors Casey Marren (Derby, Conn./Notre Dame), Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John’s) were honored as part of the 2013 Senior Day ceremony.

Assumption jumped on top just 2:28 into the game as sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) tallied his ninth goal of the season, off an assist from MacNeil. Freshman Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) extended the lead out to 2-0 on his first goal of the season just 40 seconds later. The Falcons answered though with even-strength goals from Bobby Hinds and Tim Matheson to tie the game at 2-2 with four minutes left in the quarter. Sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y/East Syracuse Minoa) put the Hounds back in front 13 seconds later as he fired a shot from the left side for his 19th goal of the season. The score was set up by a faceoff win by freshman Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) as he picked up the ground ball and fired the pass to a streaking Smith for the goal. Nick Astarita tied the game again on his sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-3 margin after one.

The second quarter was all Greyhounds as Assumption received goals from Martina, sophomore Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Munisteri to outscore the Falcons by a 3-1 margin in the period for the 6-4 halftime lead.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Smith pushed Assumption ahead to its biggest lead of the game at 7-4 with 11:29 left in the game. Matt Dente cut the lead down to 7-5 with 8:08 left before Dan Keefer scored his first goal of the season to cut the edge down to just one with 50 seconds left. Assumption regained possession and called timeout with 16 seconds left before killing off the remaining seconds for the one-goal win.

Smith, Martina and Munisteri each posted two goals, along with two assists from junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon). For Bentley, six different players found the back of the net, along with six separate players recording an assist.

Assumption was nearly perfect in clear attempts, clearing 18 of 19 attempts. Ground balls were even at 28 each, while Bentley held a 9-6 edge in faceoffs.

Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made nine saves in the win, while Jarrod Dillon turned aside eight shots in the loss.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons fall to 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 17th as the Hounds play host to Pace University for a 4 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
