BEVERLEY, MA – Adam Knapton and James Reardon each recorded one goal during the final four minutes of the second quarter, which evened the score and provided Western New England with enough momentum to go onto defeat Endicott College in Commonwealth Coast Conference championship this afternoon, 9-5.
The Golden Bears, who joined the conference in 2008, have now won the conference crown four times, three against the Gulls, as well as earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament, which starts next Wednesday.
Knapton, Jon Bota and Nick Jez recorded two goals, respectively, while Reardon, Owen Caruso, and George Knapp each registered one tally for Western New England.
Brandon Body picked up his 11th win between the pipes as he deflected 14 of 19 shots.
Endicott’s Connor McCormack finished with a hat trick, while Kyle Webber and Nick Pinciaro netted one strike apiece.
McCormack and Webber provided Endicott with a 3-1 advantage, but Western New England responded by scoring six of the next seven strikes to provide the Golden Bears with the lead for good.
Endicott marched into the final frame trailing Western New England, 6-4, but the Golden Bears ballooned their advantage with two tallies in 47 seconds as Caruso and Knapp each found the back of Cameron Bell’s cage.
McCormack netted a man-up strike at 10:08, which brought the Gulls within three, but Western New England halted a potential rally with their final goal from Jez at 2:25 to seal the win.
After the contest concluded, Body and coach John Klepacki discussed their team’s win, and their interviews are below.
