There won’t be a Massachusetts squad in the NCAA Division III lacrosse semifinals on Sunday as Tufts University and Western New England each lost their quarterfinal contests this evening. Below is a summary of each match.
SUNY Cortland 12, WNE 7 – Five third quarter goals sealed the win for the Red Dragons, who’ll meet the Tigers of RIT in the semis.
The Golden Bears, who trailed 3-0 in the first, evened the score with strikes from Adam Knapton, Sean Lawton and Jon Bota before Cortland netted two of the next three goals in the second to secure a 5-4 lead at the break.
Ryan Marcus netted two unassisted strikes in the third, which brought WNE within one, but Cortland’s Cody Consul answered to secure the lead for good.
WNE concludes its season 13-7 overall and this year’s Commonwealth Coast Conference champions.
RIT 14, Tufts 5 – The Tigers jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Jumbos in Rochester.
Chris Schoenhut, Cole Bailey, Garrett Clarke, Andrew Fiamengo and Peter Bowers each recorded one goal, while Patton Watkins finished with 14 saves between the pipes.
Tufts concludes its campaign 16-5 overall and this year’s New England Small College Athletic Conference champions.
