Six newcomers will join the Boston University women’s ice hockey team for the 2013-14 season, head coach Brian Durocher announced on Monday.
The Class of 2017 features three forwards, two goaltenders and one defenseman. It is the first group of newcomers comprised entirely of incoming freshmen since 2009. BU had welcomed transfers in each of the last three seasons.
Maddie Elia, Natalie Flynn and Samantha Sutherland will each skate at forward for the Terriers while Sarah Steele joins a veteran corps of blue liners. Mia Becker and Victoria Hanson are the first two goaltenders to join the Terriers since the 2010-11 season.
“Boston University and our staff would like to welcome these six new student-athletes to our women’s hockey program,” Durocher said. “Thanks to the thorough and diligent work of assistant coaches Katie Lachapelle and Allison Coomey we will add quality student-athletes who will help move us forward as a topflight college hockey program. We look forward to their contributions on the ice, in the classroom and throughout the Boston University community.”
The six freshmen will join 18 returning letter winners from last year’s squad that captured the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles en route to the Terriers’ second national title game appearance in three years. BU earned a program record 28 victories in 2012-13 and has won the Hockey East championship three times in the last four seasons.
