Mass. College Hoops: WACBA Honor Roll (Week 2)
WORCESTER, Mass. – With another week of college basketball in the books, it’s now time to unveil this week’s Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) honor roll.
Men’s Player of the Week: Sam Longwell (WPI) – The junior guard helped the nationally-ranked Engineers post a 2-1 record last week by averaging over 18 points and seven rebounds. Longwell led all players with 22 points and 11 rebounds in WPI’s 94-72 road victory at Curry College before he registered 21 points and six defensive rebounds in his team’s home opener against Salem State.
Men’s Rookie of the Week: Kamali Bey (Assumption) – The first-year guard averaged 15.5 points and three rebounds per game while shooting 56 percent from the field. In a road loss at Bentley, Bey led the Hounds with a 23-point effort.
Women’s Player of the Week: Dani Davis (WPI) – The junior guard played the role of hero in WPI’s 62-59 overtime NEWMAC victory over Clark as she forced the extra session by nailing a game-tying 22-foot 3-pointer with just 3.1 seconds remaining. Davis scored eight of her game-best 17 points during an 18-6 run to end regulation, which helped the Engineers erase a 47-35 deficit with under six minutes remaining. Earlier in the week, the guard just missed a double-double with eight points and nine boards in a loss to Mount Holyoke.
Women’s Rookie of the Week: Tess Nogueira (WPI) – The first-year forward averaged 5.0 points and 4.5 rebounds as the Engineers split their first two NEWMAC contests.
Alex Smith (Holy Cross) – The senior guard led the Crusaders with a game-and-season-best 19 points and five steals, to go along with five rebounds and four assists in Holy Cross’ 20-point win over Bryant University. Smith finished 7 of 13 from the field, 4 of 8 from beyond the arc and 1 of 2 from the stripe.
Shannon Ray (Assumption) – The senior guard average 19 points, three assists and two steals per game while shooting 60 percent from three-point land (6 for 10). Highlighting her week was a career-high 26-point effort in a road loss at No. 1 ranked Bentley.
Brendan Rios (Worcester State) – The junior guard tallied 20 points and connected on 8 of 11 shots from the field in an 86-73 loss to Gordon College.
Julie Frankian (Worcester State) – The sophomore guard averaged 15.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists in a 1-2 week for Worcester State, including 13 points and seven boards in a 75-70 win over UMass Dartmouth and 17 points, 14 boards and six helpers in a 77-71 setback against Mount St. Vincent. Frankian connected on 14 of 27 shots from the field for the week and was a perfect 16 of 16 at the charity strip.
Sean Doncaster (WPI) – The first-year guard totaled 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds during a 2-1 week for the Crimson and Gray.
