Brookfield, Ill. (January 14) — Five members of the Assumption College football team have earned 2013 Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region One honors for their play in the 2013 season. The Hounds have a pair of First Team honorees and three players who earned spots on the Third Team.

Senior tight end Scott Simonson (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) earns a spot on the First Team for the second straight season after leading the Hounds with 39 receptions for 604 yards and five touchdowns. A Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection, Simonson is a two-time Daktronics First Team All-Region honoree and was named to the Worcester Area Football All-Star First Team. A Second Team All-American in 2012, Simonson has drawn interest from nearly every National Football League (NFL) team and has participated in a pair of postseason All-Star games.

Senior defensive lineman Khalid Pitts (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) picked up First Team honors for the first time in his career after also being named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team. A two-time Worcester Area Football First Team All-Star, Pitts posted 49 total tackles, including 27 solo stops. He also ranked second on the team in tackles for loss with 10.5 while tying for the team lead with five quarterback hurries.

Senior All-American kicker Tad Beuchert (Danvers, Mass./St. John’s Prep) picks up Third Team honors after leading the Northeast-10 Conference in kicking points and field goals made. A Northeast-10 Conference First Team All-Star, Beuchert was also a Worcester Area Football First Team All-Star and the Worcester Area Special Teams Player of the Year. He finished the season with 15 field goals made, including a league-best 48-yarder, along with 79 total kicking points.

Junior defensive end Derrick Mann (Sharon, Mass./Sharon), the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year, was a Third Team selection for the first time. The Worcester Area Football Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star, Mann was tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and led the team with 11 tackles for loss for a total of 53 yards. Mann was also a Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection.

Senior defensive back Mike Bates (Holden, Mass./Wachusett), a three-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection and First Team member this season, earns Third Team All-Region accolades for the first time. A three-time Worcester Area Football All-Star, Bates led the team with 96 total tackles and ranked fourth in the Northeast-10 with 8.7 tackles per game. In addition, he was tied for the team lead in sacks with 5.5.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 in 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started the published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America Teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

Both Simonson and Pitts will advance to a national ballot from which the 2013 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team will be named later this month.
