Mass. College Hoops: Mack, Wickey Lead Babson Past Coast Guard
Courtesy of the Babson College sports information department, here’s this afternoon’s release from the men’s basketball game. The Beavers used a first half run to secure their 13th overall win and four NEWMAC victory to defeat U.S. Coast Guard:
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) scored a game-high 18 points and classmate David Mack (Holden, Mass.) added 16 points and six rebounds as Babson College defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 76-56, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium.
With its third straight win Babson is now 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC, while Coast Guard drops to 4-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
First-year Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points and a game-high eight boards for the Beavers, while senior Kenny Ross (Furlong, Pa.) dished out a game-high six assists.
The Bears were led by 15 points from junior David Anderson (Goose Creek, S.C.) and 14 from senior John Benedict (Cummings, Ga.).
After a sluggish start, a three-pointer by Anderson, followed by five straight points from first-year Adrian Chuquillangui (Manassas, Va.) gave Coast Guard an 18-13 lead at the 11:24 mark. Babson rallied though, making eight of its next 13 field goals to outscore the Bears 28-11 over the final 9:47 of the first half to grab a 41-29 lead after 20 minutes.
The Beavers, who shot a blistering 53.8 percent (14-for-26) in the opening stanza, buried six three-pointers and got 12 points from Wickey and nine from Flannery in the half.
Leading 53-39 with 14:15 to go Babson used a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach. Wickey finished a layup, Flannery knocked down two free throws and Ross and first-year Sam Bohmiller (Franklin, Mass.) followed with back-to-back three-pointers to make it 63-39. A pair of free throws by senior Matt Palazini (Franklin, Mass.) two possessions later helped the Green and White take its biggest lead of the game at 66-41 with 9:32 remaining.
Seven straight points by Benedict, followed by a jumper from senior Devante Weems (Chesapeake, Va.) and two free throws from Benedict got Coast Guard back within 66-52 at the 5:43 mark. Four points from Mack and layups by Palazini and Wickey helped the Beavers stretch the lead back to 74-54 with under three minutes to play.
Babson shot 54.9 percent (28-for-51) on the afternoon and outscored the Bears 22-6 off turnovers and 32-20 in the paint. The Beavers also held a 33-28 advantage on the glass.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday night as Babson travels to Clark for a 7 p.m. tip and Coast Guard hosts nationally-ranked WPI at 5:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Babson is now 45-26 all-time against Coast Guard and has won five straight meetings against the Bears going back to 2012…The Beavers are 11-0 on the year when leading at halftime…Babson has now won 10 games by 14 points or more on the season…The Beavers are 10-0 on the year when holding opponents to 60 points or less.
