Mass. College Lax: Assumption Improves To 3-0, Tops AIC On The Road

North Andover, Mass. (March 12) — Junior attack Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) posted three goals and three assists to lead a balanced attack as the Assumption College women’s lacrosse team pulled away for a 10-5 road win at Merrimack College on Wednesday afternoon. The win keeps the Hounds unbeaten at 3-0 overall, the second straight 3-0 start for Assumption.
The teams started off slow as neither found the back of the net over the opening 11 minutes of the game. The Warriors got on the board first at the 11:07 mark as Aubrie Stouffer scored her fourth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. McNeil’s fifth goal of the season with 17 minutes left in the first sparked a 5-0 Assumption run that was capped by a goal from junior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) for the 5-1 advantage with 6:10 remaining in the opening half. McNeil converted a free-position shot during the five-goal run, along with two goals from senior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough). Merrimack cut the lead down to 5-3 in the final minutes of the half as Megan Fero scored twice in a span of 23 seconds, but the Assumption defense hung tough as the Hounds took the 5-3 lead into the halftime break.
Auger struck for her sixth goal of the season just 3:07 into the second half off a pass from McNeil, the second time they connected on the afternoon. The Warriors cut the lead back down to two at 6-4 following the fifth goal of the season from Danielle Riley with 23:48 left in the game. McNeil completed the hat trick off an assist from Hagerman, followed by an unassisted score from senior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) to stretch things out to 8-4 midway thru the half.
Merrimack’s Christine Keenan scored her third goal of the season to cut the lead to 8-5 before the Hounds held the Warriors scoreless over the final 13 minutes to come away with the five-goal win. Freshman Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) notched her second career goal off an assist from McNeil, followed by the fourth goal of the season from sophomore Tess Anketell (Southborough, Mass./Marian) to close out the scoring.
In addition to McNeil’s six-point day, Auger and Hagerman each posted two goals and one assist to go along with a goal and an assist from Anketell. Defensively, the Hounds had nine different players with caused turnovers as senior Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) led the team with two. Guinee and Beall also led the team with three draw controls each.
Fero led the Warriors with two goals as four different Merrimack players scored.
In goal, freshman Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made three saves to pick up her third win of the season, while Inna Hedden had 10 stops to drop to 1-3 overall.
Assumption held a 23-13 edge in shots and converted 1-of-5 free-position opportunities in the win. The Hounds held a 16-8 edge in ground balls, forced 13 Merrimack turnovers and converted 7-of-9 clear attempts compared to 9-of-11 for the Warriors. The Hounds also held a 10-7 edge in draw controls, including 5-3 in the second half.
Assumption is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Northeast-10 play, while Merrimack drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 15th as the Hounds host American International for a Noon start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
