NEWTON, Mass. — Throughout the 2014 season, the Mount Ida men’s lacrosse team will be wearing bright yellow socks to help support the idea of “Boston Strong” and to give back to their community.
The socks, which have blue numeral “1’s” and a blue strip across the top that reads “Boston Strong”, were created by CariToes, a family-run business run by the husband and wife team of Dave and Kiera Gordon.
After the tragic events of the Boston Marathon bombings last year, Dave organized a local “Boston Strong Youth Lacrosse Jamboree” to raise money for The One Fund Boston. As a gesture of solidarity, he designed “Boston Strong” crew socks for the players, and found that everyone wanted to buy the few extra pairs he had ordered.
He formed ChariToes, and the company donates $2 from every pair of socks purchased to the One Fund Boston.
The Mount Ida men’s lacrosse team has purchased 70 pairs of socks, and coach Andrew Fink believes that the show of solidarity by the team is just as important as the money raised by their purchase.
The Mustangs (3-3) will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Rivier on Wednesday at Alumni Field. Mount Ida is looking to pick up a second GNAC win after opening their conference schedule Saturday with a 13-7 win over Johnson & Wales.
