BOSTON – Redshirt freshman Sam Tenney notched a hat trick and freshman Christian Carson-Banister made 12 saves, but the Boston University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-7 decision at Navy on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Three Terriers combined to provide the BU (1-8, 1-4 PL) goals, as Tenney tallied three while freshmen Ryan Johnston and Cal Dearth each scored a pair. Dearth also added two assists for a four-point afternoon. Freshman Sam Talkow won 11 faceoffs and collected the first two assists of his collegiate career to go along with a game-high eight ground balls. Sophomore Sammy Davis also had an assist, as did freshmen Adam Schaal and Craig Zebrowski.
Navy (4-5, 3-3 PL) outshot BU, 12-2, in the opening quarter but Johnston opened the scoring with 6:05 to play off a feed from Dearth during the first extra-man opportunity of the contest. After Navy scored to tie the game, 1-1, the Terriers regained the lead just seven seconds later with 2:45 remaining in the quarter. Talkow cleanly won a faceoff, raced into the box and quickly dished to Tenney, who fired a shot past John Connors. The Mids scored with eight seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game before getting their first lead of the game, 3-2, 3:20 into the second stanza.
Dearth leveled the score at 3-3 with 7:31 to play in the first half. Schaal was behind the Navy net and sent a pass to Dearth at the top of the box. He fired a shot past Connors for his fifth goal of the year. Carson-Banister then came up with perhaps his best save of the game when he stoned Gabe Voumard from point-blank range while the Terriers were a man-down.
The Mids scored four straight goals to end the quarter and take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Johnston began the third quarter with his team-best 11th goal of the season to make it a 7-4 game. Navy thought it would take a 9-4 lead into the final 15 minutes after scoring with eight seconds left in the third quarter, but Talkow won the ensuing draw and, like in the first quarter, quickly found Tenney for a goal with just three ticks left on the clock.
The Terriers began a comeback attempt with two straight goals to open the fourth quarter. Tenney tallied his 10th marker of the season just 33 seconds in before Zebrowski found Dearth with 10:57 to play to cut the Navy lead to 9-7. That was as close as the Terriers got, however, as the Mids added four more goals to seal the victory.
The teams were nearly even in faceoffs and ground balls, with the Terriers winning 11 of 23 draws and collecting 22 ground balls to Navy’s 24. Freshman Cam Pincus secured a career-high five ground balls while classmate Greg Wozniak secured three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
BU will host Army in the Terriers’ final Patriot League game at Nickerson Field this season. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
