Mass. College Lax: Babson Fends Off Wheaton Rally, 8-5

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men’s lacrosse team fell to rival Babson College in New England and Women’s Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday evening, 8-5, at Nordin Field.

Wheaton senior co-captain Colby Shields (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth), junior Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass./Brookline), and freshmen Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass./Salisbury School)Casey Buchholz (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and Barrett Jenness (Edmonds, Wash./The Overlake School) each netted one goal, while senior Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I./Trinity Pawling) turned away 14 of 22 shots.

Babson senior Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio/Western Revere Academy) led all scorers with a hat trick. Senior Adam Daraoff (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) recorded nine stops and picked up his sixth win of the season.

The Lyons finished with 38 ground balls and converted 18 of 26 clears. The Beavers collected a game-high 42 ground balls and were 23 for 25 on clears. Wheaton won eight face-offs, highlighted by sophomore Liam Williams (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) who picked up nine ground balls total for the Lyons. Babson won seven face-offs, as well as outshot the Blue and White, 45-23.

Babson and Wheaton swapped goals throughout the opening minutes before Morrison fired home a pass from sophomore Paul Gray (Danbury, Conn./Millbrook School) to provide the Lyons with a 2-1 lead.

The Beavers evened the score at 3:31 when sophomore Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) dodged past his defender on the left side and snapped a shot past Bramhall. Sophomore Brendan Coan (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) put Babson ahead with a bouncer from the right side with 2:05 left to play in the opening quarter.

Babson extended its lead in the second with back-to-back strikes by Packer, which provided the visitors with a 5-2 lead at the break. The Beavers added to their total by scoring two more goals in the thirdcoming off the sticks of junior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Packer.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the final frame, the Lyons rallied with a tally from Hillman on the right side at 14:31 and back-to-back markers from Buchholz and Jenness at 6:56 and 3:36, but that was all Wheaton’s offense produced against Babson’s defense, which forced 22 turnovers.

Both teams return to action next week with Wheaton traveling to Clark University on Friday, April 11 for a 7 p.m. face-off, while Babson heads to New England College on Wednesday, April 9 for a 7 p.m. start.
