By Matt Noonan
There were a variety of Division 1 and 2 lacrosse games that occurred this afternoon and below are few outcomes and game summaries.
No. 16 Harvard 11, No. 13 Yale 10: The Crimson clinched the program’s first Ivy League championship since 1990 with a one-goal victory over rival Yale.
Harvard, which shares the regular season crown with No. 11 Cornell, earned the right to host next weekend’s Ancient Eight tournament due to their win earlier this season against the Big Red. The conference tournament will begin next Friday, May 2 at Harvard Stadium. The Big Red and Penn will face-off in the first semifinal tilt at 5 p.m., while Yale and Harvard will meet at 8 p.m.
Harvard’s Devin Dwyer concluded the afternoon with six helpers, including an assist on the go-ahead strike by Sean McDonough at 8:53 in the fourth quarter. Murphy Vandervelde and Daniel Eipp finished with two goals, respectively.
No. 8 Merrimack 12, Assumption 7: The Warriors, who led 7-5 after three quarters, netted five of the final seven goals to earn their 10th win of the season. Paul Jones led Merrimack with five points on three helpers and two tallies, while Jamie Shand recorded a pair of goals and assists. Assumption’s Garrett Smith and Connor Munisteri combined for four goals and two assists.
No. 12 Loyola 18, BU 7: Jill Horka netted a hat trick, while Lindsay Weiner scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an eight-goal deficit in the Patriot League Championship. The Terriers, who played in their first conference finals, finished with 23 shots, nine draw controls and eight ground balls.
Prior to today’s contest, the Terriers beat Lehigh in the Quarterfinals, 14-9, and Navy in the semifinals, 13-12. Against the Midshipmen, BU’s Jenny Thompson sparked a 3-0 run late in the second stanza that helped the Terriers earn a one-goal victory, as well as a spot in this afternoon’s conference tournament finale.
