WACBA HONOR ROLL: Men’s Basketball Week Four (Tuesday, Dec. 12th)

WORCESTER – With the fourth week of college basketball in the books, it is time to unveil the initial Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll for the 2017-18 season, including our Player and Rookie of the Week honors.
Player of the Week: Marcos Echevarria (Nichols | Jr. | Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria helped the Bison win three-straight games last week, while averaging 26.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. He scored 25 points, including 7-of-14 three-pointers, to go with five rebounds and five assists and a block in a 91-79 win at Roger Williams. He followed that up with 28 points, with 6-of-10 triples, four rebounds and five assists in a 90-77 win over Becker. He wrapped up the week with 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 106-76 win at Anna Maria. For the week, Echevarria shot 46.7% (25-of-55) from the field, 50% (18-of-36) from beyond the arc, and 84.6% (11-of-13) from the free throw line.
Rookie of the Week: Biko Gayman (Clark University | Fr. | Port Pierce, Fla.): Clark rookie, Biko Gayman has an impressive week for the Cougars boasting 23.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 steals per game as they split their two games on the week. In a tough set back to Fitchburg State the Port Pierce native scored 11 points to go with his four assists and two steals before lifting Clark to victory over Newbury with 36 points, seven steals and six assists adding six boards.
Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria | Soph. | Charlton, Mass): Rapoza recorded his fifth double-double of the season on Saturday against Nichols, while tallying 10 points against Amherst College and 17 against Nichols College.
Samuel Durodola (Becker College | Sr. | Rosedale, N.Y.): Durodola stepped up this week for the Hawks of Becker College, averaging 21.7 points, 9.3 rebounds 2.7 assists and one block per game. After standout performances against Worcester State and regional powerhouse Nichols, Durodola had a monster performance against Gordon on Saturday, scoring 23 points with 13 rebounds as the Hawks outlasted the Scots in overtime, 79-75. For the season, the junior ranks top six in the NECC in scoring, rebounding and blocks.
Jonathan Perez (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Lowell, Mass.): Perez averaged 17.7 points, six rebounds, 0.3 assists and one steal per contest over three games for the Falcons. He notched a game-best 28 points, eight boards, one assist and one steal in a 90-70 triumph over Clark on Tuesday before adding ten points, five caroms and two steals in a setback to Williams on Thursday. Perez concluded the week with 15 points and five boards in an 85-63 loss to MIT on Saturday.
Will Watkins Jr. (Worcester State | Soph. | Southbridge, Mass.): Will Watkins Jr. averaged 16 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a block in an 0-3 week for Worcester State. He was one rebound short of a double-double in the setback to Becker as he posted 20 points, shooting 53.3% from the field and 44.4% from 3-point range, collected nine boards and two blocks. In the loss to Mount Ida he recorded 16 points and seven rebounds, and put up 12 points with six rebounds and two assists in the loss to Salve Regina. Overall this week, he shot 45.2% from the field.
Chris Rodgers (WPI | Sr. | Franklin, Mass.): Rodgers averaged 20.5 points, on 17 of 29 shooting (58.6%) and five rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Engineers. He began with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in 15 minutes as the Engineers avenged their opening weekend loss in the Coghlin tournament final, and handed No. 20 Eastern Connecticut its first loss, with a 75-70 victory in Willimantic. The local product then pumped in a career and game-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and a steal in an OT setback to Salem State.
