WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week Seven (Weds. Jan. 17th)

WORCESTER  With another week of college basketball in the books, it is time to unveil this week’s Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll, including our Player and Rookie of the Week honors.

Men’s Player of the Week: Shaun McCarthy (Worcester State | Soph. | Oxford, Mass.): The sophomore forward averaged double-double figures of 27.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in an 0-3 week for the Blue and Gold. McCarthy posted a career-high 32 points and 12 rebounds with two assists in the setback to Sage earlier in the week. He then put up 24 points and 12 rebounds in the to Framingham State, and 27 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to MCLA. Overall this week, he shot 57.7% (30-52) from the field.

Men’s Rookie of the WeekMatt Morrow (Nichols College | Fr. | Leicester, Mass.): Morrow helped lead the Bison to a 3-0 mark this past week, averaging 9.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. In a 100-68 win at Curry, Morrow notched his first career double-double with a career-high 17 points, 13 rebounds, and an assist. He followed that up with an all-around game of six points, five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and two blocks in a 90-64 win over Salve Regina. He wrapped up the week with five points, two rebounds, an assist, a block, and three steals in a 72-65 come-from-behind win at Wentworth.

Men’s Honor Roll:

Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Soph. |Charlton, Mass): Rapoza recorded his 10th double-double of the season last week in Anna Maria’s lone contest against Mount Ida by netting a career-high 29 points, while pulling down a career-best 22 rebounds.

Samuel Durodola (Becker College | Sr. | Rosedale, N.Y.): Durodola averaged 24.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks per game over three games this past week while shooting 46.3 percent from the floor. The senior led Becker to conference wins over Wheelock and Elms.

Tyrell St. John (Fitchburg State | Soph. | Stamford, Conn.): St. John posted 12 points, one rebound, two assists, five steals and one block in an 80-63 setback to Salem State University last Wednesday in the Falcons lone contest of the week.

Marcos Echevarria (Nichols College | Jr. | Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria helped lead the Bison to a 3-0-mark last week, averaging 20.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. Echevarria scored 12 points, but added a pair of rebounds, 10 assists and four steals in a 100-68 win over Curry. He followed that up with 22 points, three rebounds, six assists, and two steals in a 90-64 victory against Salve Regina. He wrapped up the week with 26 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three more steals in a 72-65 come-from-behind win at Wentworth on Saturday. For the week, Echevarria shot 47.6% (20-of-42) from the field and 55% (11-of-20) from beyond the arc, while dishing out 21 assists to just three turnovers in three games.

Chris Rodgers (WPI | Sr. | Franklin, Mass.): Rodgers paced the Engineers with an average of 18.5 points and eight rebounds, as well as 11 assists and four steals in a 2-0 week. He also clicked for 83.3 percent (10-of-12) free throw shooting at Wheaton. The senior also posted 19 points and seven rebounds versus the Lyons. He then logged game-highs of 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists at Coast Guard.

#ICYMIKareem Davis (Becker | Jr. | Lowell, Mass.): Davis became the 19th player in school history to reach the celebrated thousand point plateau for his career, and the ninth player to do so under head coach Brian Gorman, on January 3rd versus UMass Dartmouth. Davis was fouled on a three-point attempt just 2:58 into the game and buried the first two shots to reach the hallowed mark. He would finish the game with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
