WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week Eight (Tuesday, Jan. 23rd)

WORCESTER  With another week of college basketball in the books, it is time to unveil this week’s Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll, including our Player and Rookie of the Week honors.


Men’s Player of the Week: Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria | Soph. | Charlton, Mass.): Rapoza averaged a double-double of 21.3 points and 15 rebounds in a trio of games last week as Anna Maria went 1-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. He netted 22 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in a 105-87 victory over Rivier before tallying 19 points and 11 caroms in a 64-55 setback to Lasell. Two days later against St. Joseph’s (Maine), the sophomore recorded 23 points and 15 rebounds in a five-point setback to the Monks. Rapoza has now recorded 13 double-doubles this season.

Jacob Grandison

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Jacob Grandison (Holy Cross | Fr. | Oakland, Calif.): Grandison scored nine points in the victory over Army last week, including a pair of three-pointers in the final two minutes to bring Holy Cross back from a two-point deficit for the win. He tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists at Bucknell and tied his career-high for rebounds in the same game, while coming up just one point short of his career high in scoring. For the week, he averaged 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists on the week, while hitting five of 11 three-pointers.

Men’s Honor Roll:

Samuel Durodola (Becker College | Sr. | Rosedale, N.Y.): Durodola posted another stellar week for the Hawks, averaging 24.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game over three games. The senior shot 57.7 percent from the floor and averaged 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals on the defensive end. The highlight of his week came on Thursday at Newbury, when he went the distance playing 55 minutes and scoring 32 points as Becker prevailed in triple overtime.

Brandon Harris (Fitchburg State | Jr. | San Bernardino, Calif.): Harris averaged 16.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, three assists and 0.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week for the Falcons. He posted 13 points, one rebound, one assist and one block in a 77-64 setback to MCLA on Thursday before adding a team-best 20 points, two rebounds and five assists in a 91-88 win over Worcester State on Saturday.

Marcos Echevarria (Nichols College | Jr. | Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria helped lead the Bison to a 2-0 week by averaging 24.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals per game. Echevarria scored 26 points to go with a pair of rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a 79-76 win at Eastern Nazarene. He wrapped up the week with 22 points, four rebounds, six assists, and two more steals in an 82-79 win over Roger Williams. For the week, he shot 41.4% (12-of-29) from the field, 52.6% (10-of-19) from beyond the arc, and 87.5% (14-of-16) from the charity stripe.

Shaun McCarthy (Worcester State | Soph. | Oxford, Mass.): McCarthy led all scoring Saturday (Jan. 20) with 32 points, going 12-for-16 (75%) from the field and 8-for-9 (88.9%) from the charity stripe. He also recorded five rebounds and four assists in the setback to Fitchburg State.
