WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week 10 (Tuesday, Feb. 6th)

WORCESTER  With another week of college basketball in the books, it is time to unveil this week’s Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll, including our Player and Rookie of the Week honors.

Co-Men’s Player of the Week: Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria | Soph. | Charlton, Mass.): In a 2-0 week for the AMCATS, Rapoza led the charge by averaging 18.5 points and 19 rebounds, while tallying eight blocks and three assists. He also finished the week 13 of 23 from the field, while netting 11 of 17 freebies. He began the week with 15 points and 17 rebounds in a 75-69 win over Suffolk before tallying 22 points and 21 rebounds in a road win over Emmanuel. In addition to his double-double against the Saints, he also concluded the game with three blocks and three assists.

Co-Men’s Player of the Week: Samuel Durodola (Becker College | Sr. | Rosedale, N.Y.): Durodola posted another outstanding week, averaging 27.5 points with 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks on 53.7 percent shooting. The senior came up huge in Becker’s 74-60 win over Lesley with 31 points, ten rebounds and two blocks. The reigning NECC Player of the Year shot 52 percent inside the three-point arc and 50 percent from beyond the line. Then at Wheelock on Saturday, Durodola finished with 24 points and ten boards. For the season, Durodola leads the NECC in scoring at 22.7 points per game.

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Matt Morrow (Nichols College | Fr. | Leicester, Mass.): Matt Morrow helped lead the Bison to a 2-0 mark this week, averaging 11.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game. In a 94-69 win over Curry, Morrow recorded a double-double of 16 points, on 8-of-9 shooting, and 14 rebounds to go with three blocks. He followed that up with six points, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal in a 116-85 win over UNE. For the week, he shot 76.9% (10-of-13) from the field.


Men’s Honor Roll

Matthew Kelly (Assumption College | Fr. | North Potomac, Md.): Kelly was extremely impressive last week, averaging 24.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, while connecting on 19 of 30 attempts from the field, including 9 of 18 shots from beyond the arc. He netted a career and season-best 36 points in a five-point setback to Bentley, while netting 13 points against Merrimack. Against the Warriors, he converted five of eight attempts, including three of six shots from three-point land before netting a season-best 14 field goals against the Falcons. Kelly played the full 40 minutes in both games and ended the week with a trio of steals and assists.

Jonathan Perez (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Lowell, Mass.): Perez averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the Falcons. He registered a team-best 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 93-85 setback to Salem State on Wednesday before adding 24 points, three boards and two assists in an 88-86 triumph over Pine Manor on Saturday.

Jehyve Floyd (Holy Cross | Jr. | Sayreville, N.J.): Floyd totaled 15 points, nine rebounds, six blocks, four assists and two steals in the Lehigh game before adding 14 points, six rebounds, five blocks and two assists in the victory at Loyola. For the week, he averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 3.0 assists per game on the week, while hitting 12 of 13 field goal attempts (92.3 percent). Additionally, he had a school-record streak of 20 consecutive field goals made snapped in the second half of the Loyola game.

Marcos Echevarria (Nichols College | Jr. | Lynn, Mass.): Marcos Echevarria helped lead the Bison to a 2-0 week, averaging 21.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. Echevarria scored 22 points to go with five rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in a 94-69 win over Curry. He followed that up with 20 points, six assists, three steals and a rebound in a 116-85 win over UNE. For the week, he shot 41.7% (15-of-36) from the field and 37.9% (11-of-29) from beyond the arc. He has scored 20+ points in four-straight games and has eclipsed the mark in eight of his last nine times out.

Shaun McCarthy (Worcester State | Soph. | Oxford, Mass.): The sophomore forward averaged 18 points (13-for-21 from the field), seven rebounds, and an assist in a 1-1 week for the Blue and Gold. He tallied 21 points with six rebounds, two assists, and a block in the Lancers’ first home win against Framingham State. He then totaled 15 points with eight rebounds in Saturday’s setback to MCLA.
