WACBA Honor Roll: Women’s Basketball Week One (Nov. 13th)


WORCESTER  A brand new season of college basketball in Worcester has officially begun, which means its time to unveil our very first Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women’s Basketball Honor Roll, including our Player and Rookie of the Week honors, of the season.

Kaitlyn Berkel (Worcester State | Sr. | Waterford, Conn.): Berkel helped the Lancers advance to the Worcester City Tournament championship by averaging 12.5 points, 16 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in a 1-1 week. She began her team’s 2018-19 campaign with a double-double of 13 points and 22 rebounds, while adding three blocks and two assists in a 58-49 win over Clark University. She would produce her second double-double of the season one day later with 12 points and 10 boards, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the 51-45 setback to WPI on Saturday. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her impressive performances this past weekend.



Avery LaBarbera (Holy Cross | Fr. | Harrison, New York): LaBarbera scored 18 points and dished out three assists in her collegiate debut, helping guide the Holy Cross women’s basketball team to a 71-61 season-opening victory over Rider University on Sunday, November 11.

Women’s Basketball Honor Roll

Ogechi Ezemma (Clark University | Sr. | Hope Valley, R.I.): Despite an 0-2 week for the Cougars, Ezemma collected 29 rebounds (14.5 rebounds per game). She also recorded a block in Clark’s non-conference matchup versus Worcester State on Friday and three steals in the Worcester City Tournament consolation game versus Becker on Saturday. On top of her impressive defensive performance, the All-Tournament selection led the Cougars with 34 points to cap off her first week of the season with two double-doubles.

Cassidy Harrison (Becker College | Jr. | Foxborough, Mass.): Harrison opened the season with a red-hot shooting performance at the Worcester City Tournament, leading Becker to a third-place finish. The junior averaged 24 points over two games, shooting 60 percent from the floor, 60 percent from behind the arc and 100 from the free throw line. Facing Clark University on Saturday, Harrison poured in 32 points with three steals to carry the Hawks to a 70-66 win, their first-ever victory over the Cougars. Harrison further opened the season going a perfect 18-of-18 from the free throw line. She was named to the Worcester City All-Tournament Team for the third consecutive year.

Lauren Manis (Holy Cross | Jr. | Franklin, Mass.): Manis notched 26 points and 10 rebounds, including hitting 14 of her 16 free-throw chances to guide the Holy Cross women’s basketball team to a 71-61 season-opening victory over Rider University. It was the 19th double-double of her career.
