WACBA Honor Roll: Women’s Basketball Week Seven (Jan. 1st)

WORCESTER – A busy few weeks of college basketball in the Worcester area is in the books, which means it is time to unveil our seventh Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women’s Basketball Honor Roll for Tuesday, January 1st, 2019.

Manis Action 2

Women’s Player of the Week: Lauren Manis (Holy Cross | Jr. | Franklin, Mass.): Manis had two solid outings recently, which helped the Crusaders cap their December slate with back-to-back wins. Against Manhattan on Wednesday, December 19th, she posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in addition to two blocks. In their first game back after the holidays, Manis posted a team-leading 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists against Bryant University on Sunday, December 30, earning Patriot League Player of the Week honors. She has had 20 or more points in seven games this year. The Crusaders have posted an 8-3 record to begin the year, which is their best non-conference record since the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Rookie of the Week: Avery LaBarbera (Holy Cross | Fr. | Harrison, N.Y.): LaBarbera led the team with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals against Manhattan on Wednesday, December 19. She also had 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Crusaders in their first game back after the holiday against Bryant University on Sunday, December 30, earning Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. She has recorded double-digit points in seven of the team’s 11 contests this year, while Holy Cross has posted an 8-3 record in non-conference play, which is its best non-conference record since the 2013-14 season.


Women’s Basketball Milestone: Sam O’Gara (Clark University | Sr. | Worcester, Mass.):  O’Gara became the 21st student-athlete in program history to net 1,000 points during her team’s 70-65 win on Saturday over Regis College. The senior guard finished the game with a team-high 17 points on 6 of 18 shooting, while stuffing the stat sheet with five defensive rebounds, five assists and three steals. One day later against Framingham State, O’Gara tallied 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds in a 70-66 setback. Her impressive efforts led her to earn a spot on the Clark Basketball Holiday All-Classic Team.

Women’s Basketball Milestone: Kaitlyn Berkel (Worcester State | Sr. | Waterford, Conn.): Berkel became the 20th student-athlete to net 1,000 points in a Lancers uniform on Monday when Worcester State defeated UC Santa Cruz in non-conference action. The senior forward netted 20 points on 8 of 16 shooting, while adding 10 rebounds, including a trio of offensive caroms.


Honorable Mention: Spencer Vinson (WPI | Jr. | Los Angeles, Calif.): Vinson made the most of her first career start with new personal bests of 20 points and 14 rebounds Sunday versus UMass Boston.
