WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week Nine (Jan. 15th)


WORCESTER – With another week of Worcester basketball in the books, it’s now time to unveil our latest Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Basketball Honor Roll, which includes our men’s player and rookie of the week.

Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week: Marcos Echevarria (Nichols College | Sr. | Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria averaged 19.7 points and broke the program’s all-time steals record as the Bison went 3-0 last week. He scored 22 points in a road win at Western New England on Tuesday, then collected 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a road win at Wentworth two days later. On Saturday, Echevarria recorded five steals to surpass former teammates Irving Eggleston and Gustave Koumare for the top spot at Nichols in steals. He finished the contest with 21 points, six dimes and three rebounds.

Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week: Shaun McCarthy (Worcester State | Jr. | Oxford, Mass.): In a pair of conference wins this past week, the Oxford native averaged 17.5 points, 10 rebounds and 1.5 assists. Against MCLA, McCarthy tallied his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 points, while adding a pair of blocks and one assist as the Lancers rolled Framingham State, 77-59. Three days later against MCLA, McCarthy recorded 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists.

Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week: Cal Connelly (Assumption | Fr. | Rochester, N.H.): Connelly was dominant last week, averaging 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 55.0 percent overall and 53.8 percent from downtown in a pair of games. The first-year posted 19 points, four rebounds and three assists in a one-point loss to Adelphi. He followed it up with 14 points and four rebounds at New Haven.

Men’s Basketball Milestone: Brian Gorman (Becker College Men’s Basketball Coach): Gorman won his 200th career game last week when the Hawks prevailed 82-66 over visiting Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play – the win occurred on the Becker campus in Leicester. Gorman has coached the Hawks since the 2008-2009 season, and has led the program to unprecedented success. Becker has won two NECC championships under his guidance and has reached the NCAA Tournament three times. Gorman himself has been voted NECC Coach of the Year five times.

Jehve Floyd (Holy Cross | Sr. | Sayreville, N.J.): Floyd averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game last week, while hitting 82.6 percent of his field goal attempts (19 of 23), as well. He opened the week with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the 99-94 overtime loss to Lehigh before posting a career-high 25 points, six rebounds and six assists in the 77-70 victory over Lafayette.

Matthew Kelly (Assumption | So. | North Potomac, Md.): Kelly was dominant for the Hounds last week, averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc. The sophomore had 23 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a one-point loss to Adelphi and followed it up with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals at New Haven.

Brendan Kittredge (Clark University | Jr. | Clinton, Mass.): Kittredge grabbed 13 rebounds, including 10 defensive rebounds in a 1-1 week for Clark. He added a steal and a block to lead Clark defensively, while putting up 19 points and eight rebounds in the Cougar’s 86-79 conference victory over Springfield on Tuesday.

Jonathan Perez (Fitchburg State | Sr. | Lowell, Mass.): Perez registered a team-best 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists in a 102-96 triumph against Salem State last Wednesday in the Falcons’ lone contest of the week.

Dewayne Thomas (Becker College | Sr. | Lowell): Thomas averaged 14 points and 7.7 rebounds for the week. In Tuesday’s win over Mitchell, the senior scored 18 points with seven boards, four assists and two blocks to lead the Hawks to an 82-66 victory. That would represent the 200th win in Coach Brian Gorman‘s career.

Reid Walker (WPI | So. | Lithia, Fla.): Walker averaged 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds to go with five assists and three steals in a 2-0 week. He followed up a 15-point night against Wheaton with 16 versus Coast Guard.
