The Early Preseason Outlook: Becker College
By NoontimeSports.com| @NoontimeSports
Our ‘Early Preseason Outlook’ coverage continues with a closer look at the Becker College football team, which begins its 2019 campaign on Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m. against Anna Maria College in Leicester, Massachusetts.
The Hawks’ 2018 Season: Becker recorded just one win last fall, defeating the University of New England in its second to last contest of the 2018 season. Becker’s Jake McHugh toss two touchdowns in the win, while Michael Bianco rushed for 180 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown, while also recording five total tackles and one interception. The win, however, was followed by a difficult loss to Western New England, but the Hawks certainly hope they can use their win over UNE as motivation for some additional victories this fall.
The 2019 Season Outlook: The Hawks graduated seven players from last year’s squad, including Michael Bianco, offensive lineman Daniel Whittenburg, and wide receiver Ryan Fernandez, but should welcome back some talented underclassmen that logged important minutes on both offense and defense. David Collins will most likely be counted on to lead the offense – he should be the team’s number one halfback this fall – while Jared Zieman, who played linebacker, will most likely be the focal point of the Hawks’ defense. The experience the squad gained last season should help them be competitive in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
Becker’s Schedule: After entertaining Anna Maria in week one, Becker will hit the road for three-straight September contests, including a local Friday evening tilt against Worcester State. One week after their meeting with the Lancers, the Hawks will then visit MIT and Endicott College before returning home to host Husson University (10/5). Husson, as well as Nichols College (10/19) and Salve Regina (10/26) will present the Hawks with some challenges – it will be an interesting stretch to follow – before they cap their season with a trio of conference tilts, including a season-ending meeting with UNE.
Players to Watch: David Collins (Running Back/Staten Island, N.Y.), Jared Zieman (Linebacker/Bethel, Conn.) and Christian Perkins (Linebacker/Melrose, Mass.).
