The Early Preseason Outlook: Castleton University
By NoontimeSports.com | @NoontimeSports
We continue with our ‘Early Preseason Outlook’ by taking a trip to Vermont to profile the Castleton University football team. The Spartans will once again begin a new campaign by entertaining Plymouth State on Saturday, September 7th at 1 p.m.
The Spartans’ 2018 Season: Castleton capped its 2018 campaign with a 21-3 win over Alfred State on ‘Senior Day.’ The game was highlighted by the Green and White’s ground game, which saw three half backs locate the end zone, including Moe Harris, who led all rushers with 184 yards on 20 carries.
The win should provide the Spartans with some momentum heading into the upcoming season.
The 2019 Season Outlook: The Spartans will have some holes to fill due to some key graduation losses, especially at quarterback and running back. Both Harris and Mitchell Caron have graduated, which means we’ll likely see Jacob McCarthy under center and Simon Davis Jr. as the team’s top halfback. Additionally, the team graduated some wideouts, including Ryan Barry, who led the team with 31 receptions but look for rising junior Anthony Martinez to become the go-to receiver.
Chris Rice will be the player to watch on defense – he enjoyed a very successful second season on the line last fall with a team-high 88 total tackles. Rice should receive some help from linebacker Seth Gewanter, who will also be a player to watch on defense, as well.
Castleton should welcome back a slew of offensive linemen this fall, including Tucker Gaudette, who competed in eight games last fall, along with Sam Deacon and Nathaniel Hunt. The Spartans’ offensive line will certainly be the anchor of the team’s offense this season.
Castleton’s Schedule: The Spartans will face some familiar foes from the get-go, including Plymouth State, Fitchburg State, and Norwich University. Additionally, they will square off against the University of New England in week three, which is certainly an intriguing match-up. All four contests should prepare the Green and White for a successful showing in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), which could be wide-open this year with Husson University‘s departure to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). Early conference tilts with Gallaudet University and Maritime (N.Y.) will tell us more about this Castleton squad, which hopes to contend for the top spot in the ECFC.
Players to Watch: Jacob McCarthy (Quarterback/West Yarmouth, Mass.), Simon Davis Jr. (Running Back/Warwick, R.I.), Anthony Martinez (Wide Receiver/Brattleboro, Vt.), Tucker Gaudette (Offensive Line/Georgia, Vt.), Sam Deacon (Offensive Line/Canajoharie, N.Y.), Andy Kenosh (Punter/Kicker/Rutland, Vt.), Chris Rice (Defensive Line/Bethel, Conn.) and Seth Gewanter (Linebacker/Deerfield, Mass.).
