WACBA Men’s Basketball Honor Roll (Tuesday, February 11th, 2020)

Another week of college basketball in the Worcester area is in the books, which means it is time to unveil our tenth Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Honor Roll for the 2019-20 season.

Noontime Sports is proud to partner with WACBA for the seventh consecutive season to host the weekly honor roll, which will be seen every Tuesday throughout the current college basketball season. Each week, we will select a player and rookie of the week, as well as highlight various milestones, too.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Sr. | Charlton, Mass.): Rapoza helped the AMCATs win a pair of games last week by averaging a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds. The senior forward began the week by netting 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting while recording eight rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal against Saint Joseph’s (Maine) before producing a team-high 38 points on 12 of 15 shooting to go with 16 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal against Johnson & Wales University.

Men’s Rookie of the Week: John Lowther (WPI | Fr.| Hingham MA): Lowther continued his recent strong play, averaging 9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists as the Crimson and Gray won a pair of games last week to improve to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. The first-year center connected on 7-of-11 (63.6%) shots from the floor and drained both of his 3-point attempts.

Men’s Basketball Milestone of the Week: Tyler Davern (Clark University | Jr. |Webster, Mass.): Davern was a player to watch last week for the Cougars, averaging 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in back-to-back games while becoming the 29th member of the Clark University men’s basketball program to net 1,000 points. The third-year forward reached 1,000 points this past Saturday against Babson College when he registered 24 points to go with nine rebounds in 35 minutes. Three days earlier against WPI, Davern produced 23 points on 9 of 14 shooting to go with 11 rebounds, one assist, and one block.


Men’s WACBA Honor Roll | Tuesday, February 11th, 2020

Malik Brown (Assumption College | RS-Jr. | Waldorf, Md.): Brown finished the week with a total of 32 points in two games. He started the week with 10 points and five rebounds in a setback to Saint Anselm before leading the Hounds with 22 points and nine rebounds at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.

Mateus Ribeiro (Becker College | Jr. | Sao Paulo, Brazil): Ribeiro continued to produce for the Hawks this past week, averaging 11.5 points per game with 8.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals over two games.

Devon Johnson (Fitchburg State | Soph. | Washington, D.C.): Johnson averaged 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals per contest for the Falcons. He totaled a career-best 20 points, ten rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in an 83-80 setback to MCLA on Wednesday before adding six points, two caroms, three assists and four steals in a 72-55 loss to Westfield State on Saturday.

Jaekwon Spencer (Nichols College | Soph. | Bristol, Conn.): Spencer poured in a career-high 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting (.917 FG pct.) in a win over Salve Regina this past Saturday at the Nichols Athletic Center. Spencer was also a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown and also collected five rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 28 minutes.

Corey Olivier (Worcester State | So. | Maynard, Mass.): In a 1-1 week for the Lancers, Olivier averaged a team-high 18.5 points per game while averaging 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game with an assist to turnover ratio of 1.6.

Kahleb Downing (WPI | Jr. | Middletown, Conn.): During a 2-0 week for the Engineers, the junior point guard doled out 17 assists while committing just two turnovers. Downing averaged 11.5 points, 8.5 assists, and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 50% from the floor and an eye-popping 54.5% from 3-point land. In a 90-81 victory over Coast Guard Academy this past Saturday, the junior flirted with a triple-double, notching 20 points while dishing out eight assists and hauling in seven rebounds.
