There will be at least one New England D-III football game this fall as Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy will meet on Saturday, November 14 to compete for the Secretaries’ Cup. The two teams will compete in Kings Point, New York, according to this evening’s release

In addition to the two academies competing on the gridiron in November, the CGA and USMMA women’s volleyball teams will square-off in New London, Connecticut on Saturday, October 24 while both men’s soccer teams will compete in a match scheduled for Saturday, October 31. Similar to the football meeting, the men’s soccer match will also take place in New York.

“I am very excited to announce our intention to compete in single game(s) competition with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy this fall in the sports of volleyball, men’s soccer, and football,” Coast Guard Academy Director of Athletics’ Dr. Dan Rose said, via this evening’s release. “This decision was arrived at following close examination of our current safety protocols and a commitment to follow NCAA guidance with regard to testing and other resocialization of sports standards.”

Added Coast Guard Academy first-year football coach C.C. Grant, “I’m just thankful that our seniors get to play at least one game this year, and to have it be against the Merchant Marine Academy makes it all the more special.”

All three contests will count as one point with the academy that garners the most points being rewarded the Superintendents’ Trophy.

Merchant Marine defeated Coast Guard Academy last fall in the annual Secretaries’ Cup with a 56-41 victory.
