Happy Friday, everyone – we made it!
And welcome to the first Friday of February – let’s celebrate.
It’s a BIG weekend for so many of us as the final game of the 2020 National Football League (NFL) is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Can you believe it?
Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will compete in Super Bowl on Sunday, which is one of many subjects – and yes, topics, too – discussed on today’s Football Friday Podcast (listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Anchor).
Alright, let’s kickstart the day with a brand new Daily Noontime – as usual, be well, stay safe, and hold the line, everyone!
Friday’s Headlines for February 5, 2021
- We begin today’s Daily Noontime with some BIG news – well, more some breaking news, to be exact: TurnkeyZRG will assist the Pac-12 with finding its next commissioner.
As of this morning, it appears it appears the conference would like to have a new commissioner in place ahead of next school year. And that is certainly not a bad idea, right? - One day after the NCAA canceled D-III winter sports championships for the second-straight year, the organization – well, more the Division I Council Coordination Committee, to be exact, “approved contingency plans” for both winter and spring championships to take place over the next few weeks and months.
Thursday’s news did not impact the upcoming March Madness Tournament, however, which expected to take place next month in a bubble environment. - According to ProHockeyRumors.com, Lindenwood University of St. Charles, Missouri, is set to launch a Division I men’s ice hockey program during the 2022-23 school year.
The news of Lindenwood’s hockey program was initially reported by Jeff Cox of the New England Hockey Journal. - We missed this story earlier this week, but according to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports (FOS), ESPN is apparently interested in luring Jim Nantz away from CBS to become the network’s face of “its NFL and Masters golf coverage.”
Nantz’s could become a free agent broadcaster this summer, pending current contract negations, but this would be a BIG hire for the world-wide-leader. - This may sound crazy, but if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, then fans of Tom Brady will be able to purchase signed memorabilia from the greatest quarterback ever before he hoists the Lombardi Trophy. Again, this sounds crazy, but this will happen, as noted by Eben-Novy Williams of Sportico.
- Just a short time ago, Holy Cross unveiled its spring football schedule, which will feature four games, including two home games against Bucknell University and Fordham University.
The Crusaders, who finished 7-6 in 2019, won the Patriot League crown with an end-of-season victory against Georgetown University. They would advance to the opening round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs – their bid toward a national championship concluded against Monmouth.
Holy Cross will play its first game of the spring season on Saturday, March 13, but the initial FCS spring contest will occur next weekend when McNeese State visits Tarleton State University.
Finally, our Black History Month celebration on the men and women that have and continue to make an impact on the sports world continued yesterday with getting to know Paul Robeson, who starred as a defensive end with the Rutgers University football team.
