Heading into the 2022 New England NCAA Division III football season, it was expected – perhaps, predicted? – that UMass Dartmouth would contend for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

As of late last night, the Corsairs appear to be the team to beat in the MASCAC following a 28-14 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

With its two-touchdown win over the Buccaneers, the Corsairs have positioned themselves as the favorite heading into the final few weeks of the regular season. UMass Dartmouth has won five of six contests, including four-straight conference wins, which include victories against Framingham State and Western Connecticut.

Quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos has been the player to watch on the Blue and Gold this fall – he recorded two touchdowns (one passing and one rushing) against the Buccaneers while halfback Luis Gonzalez added two scores on the ground.

UMass Dartmouth has four games remaining on its schedule, including an end-of-the-month meeting with Bridgewater State, which has kept its title hopes alive with a 40-27 victory against Western Connecticut.

The Bears are currently 2-3 overall, including 1-1 against MASCAC foes.

In addition to Bridgewater State, Plymouth State is also a team MASCAC fans should keep their eyes on – the Panthers will go for their fifth-straight win tomorrow when they welcome the Wolves of Western Connecticut to Currier Field.

Like UMass Dartmouth, the Panthers of Plymouth have enjoyed a successful season, winning four-straight contests, including a pair of important league tilts with Bridgewater State and Framingham State.

Luckily, we still have a few more weeks to decide this year’s MASCAC champion, but after what we have witnessed these last few weeks, the Corsairs appear to be the favorite after clinching its fifth win of the season last night.
