New Eng. High School Notebook: Games To Watch This Weekend (Apr. 26th-28th)

NS HS LAX

By Matt Noonan | @MattyNoonz11

Welcome to Friday – we made it!

We have some great high school lacrosse games to follow, so let’s dive into some matchups you will certainly want to follow both today and this weekend.

For starters, Duxbury will host Medfield in a non-conference clash, which will certainly tell us a lot more about both teams. The Dragons are coming off an exciting 8-7 overtime win last night over Hingham, thanks to a Mike McCutcheon, who netted both the equalizer and game-winner.

The win certainly provides the Dragons with some momentum heading into Saturday’s late afternoon meeting with a Warriors squad, which secured the second position in this week’s Boston Globe Boy’s Lacrosse Top 20.

Medfield has yet to drop a single game this season and will enter Saturday’s marquee clash with an 8-0 mark following back-to-back Tri-Valley League (TVL) wins over Bellingham and Norton.

Following their win over Norton, Medfield announced some exciting news about Tommy Gill, who will be attending Hotchkiss School in Connecticut following graduation later this spring.

In addition to Duxbury-Medfield, lacrosse fans should certainly keep their eye on an important Catholic Central League (CCL) clash between Bishop Fenwick and St. Mary’s of Lynn. Both teams will meet in Peabody on Saturday with face-off scheduled for 12 p.m.

Here are a few other games to keep an eye on.

  • Massachusetts Lacrosse (Girls): Foxborough at Walpole (Friday, Apr. 26th at 3:45 p.m.)
  • Maine Lacrosse (Boys): Thornton Academy at Cape Elizabeth (Friday, Apr. 26th at 6 p.m.)
  • Massachusetts Lacrosse (Boys): Concord-Carlisle at Reading (Saturday, Apr. 27th at 1 10 a.m.)
  • Massachusetts (Boys): Walpole at Xaverian Brothers (Saturday, Apr. 27th at 1 p.m.)
  • Massachusetts Lacrosse (Boys): Lincoln-Sudbury at St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) (Saturday, Apr. 27th at 2 p.m.)
  • Massachusetts & Rhode Island Lacrosse (Boys): La Salle (R.I.) at Boston College High School (Saturday, Apr. 27th at 3 p.m.)
  • Connecticut Lacrosse (Boys): Darien at St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) (Sunday, April 28th at 10 a.m.)
  • Massachusetts Lacrosse (Boys): Lincoln-Sudbury at Haverford (Pa.) (Sunday, April 28th at 2 p.m.)

New England High School Notebook: Breaking Down Our Mass. Top 10 Polls

NS HS LAX

By Matt Noonan | @MattyNoonz11

Welcome to the second to last week of April where we find both Lincoln-Sudbury and Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) in the top spot of their respective eastern Massachusetts polls, which were posted today on Twitter.

This week’s Noontime Lax Eastern Massachusetts Top 10 Polls (as seen on Twitter):

Boy’s Lacrosse Top 10 (Monday, Apr. 22nd)

Girl’s Lacrosse Top 10 (Monday, Apr. 22nd)

Eastern Massachusetts Boy’s Lacrosse News & NotesL-S secured the top spot this week in our boy’s Top 10 following an impressive 12-9 win last Saturday over second-ranked Hingham in the 2019 Coaches Cup championship, which was held at Winchester High School.

Matt Ward helped the Warriors erase the memories of last year’s semifinal loss to the Harbormen by netting six goals and dishing out one assist, while Johnny Herlihy added five points on three goals and two assists.

Prior to their win over Hingham, Lincoln-Sudbury topped Concord-Carlisle (14-5) and Winchester (15-10).

As noted in Tommy Cassell‘s game story, the win over Hingham was a tribute to the seniors from last year, who saw their 58-game winning streak against Massachusetts teams snapped, along with members of this year’s team that wasn’t on the field last Saturday.

Moving up to the third position this week on the boy’s poll was Medfield, which scored two impressive wins last week over Xaverian Brothers (9-6) and Pinkerton (New Hampshire) (17-5). Both wins are solid and should continue to provide coach John Isaf‘s unit with some momentum heading into their upcoming three-game road trip with visits to Bellingham, Norton, and Duxbury.

Eastern Massachusetts Girl’s Lacrosse News & NotesOne can make the case for Notre Dame Academy (Hingham)and Wellesley for being in the top spot, but for the second-straight week, the Cougars secured the top spot, while the Raiders moved into second. Norwell checked-in third overall, while Walpole and Westwood secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Notre Dame boasts just one loss this season against a non-Massachusetts team – the Cougars lost to Radnor (Pennsylvania) last week but rebounded with a 15-10 win over Franklin, which checked-in ninth this week.

In addition to a recent win over the Panthers, the Cougars have also scored wins against Cohasset (19-9) and Duxbury (18-5) but face some challenges ahead against Norwell (next Monday), along with Needham and Westwood next month.

Speaking of Westwood, the Wolverines recently edged the Rockets last week, 13-12, thanks to four goals from Kayla Conway and eight points (two goals and six assists) from Alex Finn.

Needham, however, managed to rebound a few days later with a convincing 22-8 win over Wayland.

Both Needham and Westwood will remain teams to watch this week, as well as next month, too, but so are squads like Reading, Lincoln-Sudbury and Wayland.
