Earlier today, the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced an exciting partnership with the City of Quincy, which will allow the professional lacrosse team to compete at Veterans Memorial Stadium, beginning next June.

The Cannons, who have been competing in the MLL since 2001, recently called Harvard Stadium their home site, but have also hosted games at Gillette StadiumCawley Stadium and Nickerson Field.

As noted in today’s release, the organization plans to “make a significant investment to enhance” Veterans Memorial Stadium,” which currently houses both Quincy High School and North Quincy High School football teams, along with various local youth and community teams, as well. Veterans Memorial Stadium currently can seat at least 5,000 fans.

Moving the team from Allston to Quincy will allow the team to continue to grow its presence, both in the city and throughout the South Shore, with its headquarters based not too far away from Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Cannons have called Quincy their home since moving to the city in 2016.

“The Boston Cannons organization is both excited and proud to call Veterans Memorial Stadium our new home,” said Boston Cannons President Ian Frenette earlier today at City Hall in Quincy.

“With the expanding Major League Lacrosse schedule, it was an opportunity for us to assess the best possible home for our organization and we’re thrilled to partner with Mayor (Thomas P.) Koch and the City of Quincy.

“Along with game days, moving to the stadium provides our organization a greater opportunity to grow the game of lacrosse throughout Greater Boston with increased youth clinics, camps, tournaments and presence.”

Boston will host eight games next season at Veterans Memorial Stadium, beginning with its season-opener on Saturday, June 1st when they welcome the Ohio Machine to Quincy.

With the number one pick in the 2018 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft last night, the Boston Cannons selected Trevor Baptiste from the University of Denver.

Baptiste becomes the first-ever face-off specialist to be taken first overall in the collegiate draft – he is also the first top-three selection for the Pioneers, according to yesterday’s press release from the University of Denver.

“He’s a dominant face-off guy,” Boston Cannons coach Sean Quirk said via Matt McGuirk of BostonCannons.com.

“We’ve certainly been watching him closely,” Quirk added.

Considered one of the best face-off specialist in the collegiate game, Baptiste enters his team’s second-to-last weekend second in NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse history in face-off wins (1,076) and ground balls (594). He needs 41 face-off wins to match Kevin Massa (Bryant University), who currently holds the record of 1,117 face-off wins. Massa also holds the record for ground balls in a career with 753.

This season, Baptiste has won 197 of 254 face-offs, while scooping a team-high 113 ground balls.

In addition to Baptiste, Boston also selected Will Sands (Bucknell University), Tom Kennedy (Bryan University), Kevin McGeary (University of Pennsylvania) and Anthony Johnson (Bryant University).

All five selections will certainly be counted on when they join the Cannons later this season – Boston officially begins it 2018 campaign this Saturday, April 21st when they visit the Charlotte Hounds. Face-off between the Cannons and Hounds is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
