WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week 15 (Feb. 26th)

Roger Williams and Nichols College

WACBA Men’s Co-Player of the Week: Marcos Echevarria (Nichols College | Sr. | Lynn, Mass.): Echevarria averaged 26.0 points in back-to-back Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament games as the Bison became the fourth team in conference history to capture its third-straight league title. The Lynn, Massachusetts native scored 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting in a come-from-behind win over Western New England last Thursday in the semifinals before stuffing the stat sheet with 31 points, nine assists, and five rebounds in a 105-90 championship win over Gordon College last Saturday at the Hart Center. Echevarria drained seven trifectas to become the all-time leading scorers in the CCC with 2,240 points.

WACBA Men’s Co-Player of the Week: Jehyve Floyd (Holy Cross | Sr. | Sayreville, N.J.): Floyd averaged 17.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots last week while hitting 88.2 percent of his field goal attempts (15 of 17). He posted 18 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots against Boston University before tallying 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and two steals in the 73-71 win at Lehigh University. Against Lehigh, Floyd converted a three-point play with 41.9 seconds left to give the Crusaders the lead for good.

WACBA Men’s Rookie of the Week: Jaekwon Spencer (Nichols College | Fr. | Bristol, Conn.): Against the Golden Bears, Spencer came off the bench and posted career-highs in both points (15) and rebounds (10) to help the Bison rally from a 19-point deficit to advance to the conference championship. The Bristol, Connecticut native was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe, while also recording a blocked shot. He played seven minutes against the Fighting Scots in the CCC Championship and picked up three points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist in seven minutes.

Colin McNamara (WPI | Soph. | Arlington, Mass.): McNamara led the Engineers in scoring last week while sinking the game-winning bucket with no time left to edge MIT, 55-53, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals last Thursday. The sophomore shared game-high honors with 20 points at Babson before doing the same with 13 at MIT. McNamara finished the week with 16 points in a NEWMAC championship setback to Emerson College last Saturday.

Nicholas Tracy (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Indianapolis, Ind.): Averaged 12 points, 4.5 rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals per contest in two games for the Falcons. He posted 11 points, seven boards, six assists and one steal in a 67-55 victory over Worcester State on Tuesday before adding 13 points, two caroms, two assists and one steal in a 78-72 setback to Westfield State on Thursday.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Kareem Davis (Becker College | Sr. | Lowell, Mass.): With the season hanging in the balance, Davis produced his most dominant week of the season, as he averaged 35 points per game with 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals and led the Hawks to back-to-back victories. The senior team captain shot 45.7 percent from the floor, 40 percent from behind the arc, and 85.7 percent from the line. In Wednesday’s 85-79 home win over Elms College, Davis set a school record for free throws, going 19 of 22 from the line on his way to 32 points with five assists and four steals as he rallied Becker to victory. Then on Saturday at Newbury College, Becker’s all-time leader in scoring poured in 38 points in a 115-92 route.

Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week: Jordan Rose-Wheatley (Becker College | Fr.| Bedford, Mass.): Rose-Wheatley posted double-digit performances this past week, scoring 10 points in Becker’s win over Elms College and 11 in their victory at Newbury College on Saturday. For the week, the rookie shot 83.3 percent from the floor with 10.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

Tyler Davern (Clark University | Soph. | Webster, Mass.): Davern finished the week with 40 points and 13 rebounds. He fell short of a double-double by producing 12 points and nine points in his team’s final road contest of the season against MIT before registering 28 points and four rebounds last Saturday in a 78-75 loss to Wheaton College.

Frantz Francois (Worcester State | Jr. | Boston, Mass.):  Francois averaged 10.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in a 0-2 week for the Lancers. Against Bridgewater State, the Boston native recorded a double-double of 12 rebounds and 11 points, while tallying a trio of assists and swipes in 36 minutes. Three days later against Westfield State, Francois recorded his second double-double for the week with 13 rebounds and 10 points, while also contributing three assists and one block.

Caleb Green (Holy Cross | Soph. | Londonderry, N.H.): Green averaged 16.5 points and 3.5 assists in a pair of games last week, while connecting on 59.1 percent of his field goal attempts and 50.0 percent of his three-pointers. He led the team with 19 points on eight-of-nine shooting from the field against Colgate University before adding 14 points and five assists during the Crusaders’ win over Bucknell University.

Devan Harris (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Danvers, Mass.): Harris averaged 17 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest in two games for the Falcons. He posted a double-double of 18 points and ten boards with one assist and two steals in an 82-77 setback to Westfield State on Wednesday before adding 16 points, seven rebounds and one steal in an 80-68 triumph over Bridgewater State on Saturday.

Colin McNamara (WPI | So. | Arlington, Mass.): Bolstered by a career-high 27 points Saturday against No. 8 MIT, McNamara averaged 17 points to go with six assists and a steal last week. In the mid-week game at Emerson College, the sophomore notched seven points and five assists.

Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Jr. | Charlton, Mass.): Rapoza averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds in a pair of games last week for the AMCATs. The junior forward began the week with 15 points on 6 of 17 shooting, including three of four from the stripe, while adding 10 rebounds against Emmanuel College before posting 29 points and 13 rebounds in an 89-75 setback to Lasell College.

Springfield College and Becker College

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Kareem Davis (Becker College| Sr.| Lowell, Mass.): Davis averaged 21.7 points, 4.7 steals, 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game over three games last week. First, against New England College on Tuesday, he finished with 19 points and five steals. In Thursday’s 84-56 victory at Elms College, Davis poured in 32 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from behind the arc. Finally, against Newbury College on Saturday, Davis finished with 14 points.

Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week: Michael Speight (Assumption College| Fr. | Morningside, Md.): Speight was solid for the Hounds in a tough three-point loss last week against Pace University. The first-year totaled 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with three rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Chris Cardoso (Worcester St. | So.| Jamaica Plain, Mass.): Cardoso went off for 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the Lancers’ loss at Fitchburg State last Saturday. The sophomore also grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded one steal.

Tyler Davern (Clark University | So. | Webster, Mass.): Davern put up a team-high 34 points this past week. He started with 27 points in an overtime setback to Coast Guard Academy last Wednesday, while adding eight rebounds. On Saturday, Davern put up seven points and added three steals in a setback to WPI at home.

Colin McNamara (WPI | So.| Arlington, Mass.): The sophomore notched double-digit scoring in both games last week, including a career-high 18 points against Clark University last Saturday. On Wednesday against Emerson College, McNamara netted 11 points, along with five rebounds and five assists.

Jonathan Perez (Fitchburg St.| Sr.|Lowell, Mass.): Perez averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest in a 2-0 week for the Falcons. The senior posted 19 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 98-79 victory against MCLA last Wednesday before adding 16 points, four caroms, two assists and two steals in a 78-74 triumph over Worcester State on Saturday.

Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Jr. | Charlton, Mass.): Rapoza scored 28 points against Suffolk University before netting 17 against Rivier University. He also tallied 17 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 assists, and 2 steals last week, as well.
