Mass. College Hoops: Thursday Afternoon Roundup

Despite some snow (or a lot of snow!) there were indeed a few basketball games that occurred this afternoon, and below are their outcomes and summaries.

Men’s Basketball

Boston University 70, Holy Cross 60: The Terriers picked up their first Patriot League win, thanks to Maurice Watson Jr., who led the Terriers with 12 points. Dom Morris and John Papale notched 12 points, respectively, while Cullen Hamilton led Holy Cross and all scorers with 16 points.

Eastern Nazarene 75, Maine-Presque Isle 56: Eric Lynch led the Lions with a game-best 21 points, which helped Eastern Nazarene earn their seventh win of the season.

Brandeis 81, Roger Williams 74: Derek Retos scored a team-high 19 points off the bench in 18 minutes, while Alex Stoyle notched 12 points as the Judges defeated the Hawks.

Women’s Basketball

Holy Cross 69, Boston University 59: Raquel Scott recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a career-best 24 points and 10 rebounds, which helped the Crusaders cruise to their first Patriot League victory. Meghan Green, who registered a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 12 caroms, led BU.

Eastern Nazarene 70, Maine-Presque Isle 61: Katy Teare posted her first double-double with career-highs of 24 points and 18 rebounds, which helped the Lions claim their fourth overall victory.

UMass Boston 60, Salve Regina 54: Kirsten Morrison scored a game-high 18 points off the bench, while Olivia Murphy netted 14 points and recorded seven boards, as the Beacons defeated the Seahawks and earned their eighth overall win.

Wheaton 72, Roger Williams 59: Kiley Shoemaker recorded a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds (11 defensive boards), while Abbie Brickley registered 24 points and seven caroms as the Lyons defeated the Hawks and improved to 10-0.

Mass. College Hoops: WACBA Weekly Report (Jan. 7-13)

Another week of college basketball is in the books. And without further ado, here is this week’s WACBA Rookies of the Week, Players of the Week and Honor Roll.

NOTE: This week’s write-ups courtesy of the college’s sports information director.

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Cullen Hamilton (Holy Cross) Fr., Guard, Washington, D.C.: Hamilton totaled eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in his team’s win against Columbia. Against Lehigh, he added six points and two rebounds. He finished the week 2 of 3 from the charity stripe.

Women’s Rookie of the Week: Raquel Scott (Holy Cross) Fr., Forward, Ridgewood, New Jersey: The first-year finished the past week with 15 points. She netted 11 points in her team’s win against Brown, and recorded three rebounds, two steals and one assist against Lehigh. Her 11 points were the third most points versus Brown as she connected on 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Men’s Player of the Week: Kevin Donahue  (Assumption College) Gr. Student, Guard, Pawcatuck, Conn: Donahue averaged 19 points and knocked down nine three-pointers in a 2-0 week for the Hounds as Assumption improved to 11-2 overall. He began the week with a 25-point effort in a home win over Bentley, knocking down seven three-pointers in the win. In the process, Donahue became the 42nd player in Assumption history to surpass the 1,000-point mark for his career. He then ended the week with a 13-point effort, including two three-pointers, to go along with two rebounds and three steals in an overtime road win at Southern New Hampshire.

Women’s Player of the Week: Meaghan O’Keefe (Worcester State) Sr., Center, Warren, Mass: Averaged 17.3 points, 14.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in a 2-1 week for Worcester State including 21 points and 19 boards in a 49-48 triumph over Westfield State before she added 25 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in a 62-46 win over MCLA. Also connected for .500 from the field (20-40) and 46 percent from beyond the arc (6-13).

Honor Roll:

Amy Lepley (Holy Cross) Sr., Forward/Guard, Norfolk, Mass: Lepley finished the past week with 30 points and tied a game-best 17 points and four assists in a loss to Lehigh, while recording a season-best five assists against Brown. Lepley is now the 24th leading scorer in Holy Cross history with 1,033 career points. Through seven games played this season, Lepley ranks second on the team in points (11.9) and leads the squad in rebounds (5.7).

Justin Burrell (Holy Cross) Soph., Forward, Dumfries, Virginia: Burrell tallied 29 points, four assists and three rebounds in a win against Columbia. His 29 points were his second-most this season. Against Lehigh, he led the Crusaders with 16 points. In both games, he connected on 13 of 14 shots from the stripe.

Katy Howard (Assumption College) Sr., Guard, Medway, Mass: In a 1-1 week for the Hounds, Howard averaged 17 points per game while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point land. She also added 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. In a home loss to No. 2 ranked Bentley, Howard posted 16 points, including 4-for-5 from three-point land. She then ended her week with an 18-point effort on 6-for-11 shooting from the field in a 71-51 road win at Southern N.H.

Anthony Click (Anna Maria College) Sr., Forward, Springfield, Mass: Click averaged 29.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in leading the AMCATS to back-to-back overtime GNAC victories.  In a 4 OT thriller vs. Lasell the senior scored a career-high 39 points on 13-for-26 shooting from the field and 13-of-18 from the free-throw line as well as grabbing 11 rebounds and notching 6 blocks. Click had the game winning assist as the AMCATS connected on a last second 3-pointer for the 96-93 win. On the road at Norwich, Click was 6-for-14 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe for 19 points. With two seconds remaining in the first overtime, Click hit the game-winning layup for the 72-70 victory.

Matt Langadas (Nichols College) Soph., Forward, Casco, Maine: Langadas averaged 17.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game, as the Bison won their first two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) games of the season. He began the week by scoring 17 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals as the Bison scored a school-record 130 points in a win over defending conference champion Endicott in Beverly. Following a loss to Eastern Nazarene on Thursday in which he went for 13 points and eight boards, Langadas scored a team-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists in a road win at UNE on Saturday. He also recorded one steal in each game.

Dane Jobst (Worcester State) Jr., Forward, Athol, Mass: Averaged 15.7 points, 9.7 boards and 2.0 blocks in an 0-3 week for Worcester State including 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 75-71 loss to MCLA and 23 points and 10 caroms in an 87-71 setback against nationally-ranked WPI.

Sam Longwell (WPI) Sophomore, Guard, Acton, Mass: Longwell averaged 17 points and 6.3 points and the Engineers remained unbeaten by winning all three of their contest last week.  The guard fell a rebound short of a double-double when he tallied games-bests of 22 points and nine rebounds in a 58-41 road win at Wheaton on Saturday.  Earlier in the week the sophomore registered 18 points in a road triumph at Worcester State and added 11 points as the Crimson and Gray defeated Coast Guard.  For the week Longwell drilled 6-of-14 3-pointers and added six assists and five steals.

Theresa Logan (WPI) Sr., Forward, Southboro, Mass: Logan narrowly missed averaging a double-double last week as she posted averages of 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds during a 2-1 week for WPI.  The senior co-captain began her week by notching 18 points and nine rebounds in a 74-53 victory against crosstown rival Clark.  The forward followed that performance by totaling a team-high 21 points and a game-best 12 boards as the Engineers defeated Mount Holyoke 67-54.  Finally, Logan corralled team-best seven rebounds in a road loss to Wellesley.

Mass. College Hoops: WACBA Honor Roll (Week Two)

The second week of the college basketball season in Worcester is in the books. And with that being the case, here is this week’s WACBA Honor Roll.

Dave Dudzinski (Holy Cross) – The junior tallied 31 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two assists in his team’s two games against St. John’s and New Hampshire He was 4-of-4 from the stripe in both games, as well as led the team with 19 points in 65-53 setback against the Red Storm.

Cullen Hamilton (Holy Cross) – For the second time this season, Hamilton reached double-figures with 11 points against New Hampshire. He finished the week with 17 points, eight rebounds and one assist.

Katy Howard (Assumption College) – The Medway native helped the Hounds preserve their perfect record by averaging 15.5 points per game, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Howard led her squad with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting in a 26-point rout against Pace University at home.

Meaghan O’Keefe (Worcester State University) – Despite being apart of two losses this past week, the senior from Warren averaged 12.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds. O’Keefe’s best performance came against UMass Dartmouth where she tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-64 loss.

Ryan Kolb (WPI) – The junior forward from Watertown averaged 12.5 points per game and nine rebounds in WPI’s two back-to-back victories against Becker College and Curry College. Kolb recorded a career-best 18 points and 11 rebounds against Curry, and chipped in seven points and seven rebounds against Becker.

Theresa Logan (WPI) – Against Connecticut College, the senior from Southborough recorded 14 points and nine rebounds in her team’s 66-57 road victory. Logan finished the game with a pair of steals and block shots, too.

Mass. College Hoops: WACBA Rookies Of The Week

After an exciting first week of the college basketball season, here are our WACBA Rookies of the Week, who both hail from Holy Cross.

Cullen Hamilton (Holy Cross) – In his team’s fourth contest of the season against University of  Maine, the freshman from Washington, D.C. recorded four points, seven rebounds and two assists. He also sank one three-pointer and one free throw, too. His seven rebounds and two assists against the Black Bears were career highs, according to the sports information department.

Raquel Scott (Holy Cross) – Against University of New Hampshire last Saturday, the freshman from Ridgewood, New Jersey, who earned her first start, tallied 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals (all career highs) in the Crusaders 68-65 setback. Scott currently ranks first in the Patriot League with a .600 field goal percentage.
