Mass. High Schools: Thursday Roundup

NS HS ROUNDUP

By Matt Noonan | @MattyNoonz11

Weeks after scoring its initial win over Malden, the Medford boy’s lacrosse team found themselves needing to claw back from a two-goal deficit not once, but twice to secure hard-fought 8-7 overtime victory over the Golden Tornadoes on Thursday afternoon at the Edgerly Sports Complex.

Medford’s PJ Haberstroh netted back-to-back goals, including the equalizer with 4:44 remaining in the fourth quarter before Tom Connearney clinched the win for the Blue and White with a transition goal during the final seconds of overtime.

The win provided the Mustangs with a season-sweep of the Golden Tornadoes, who led for a majority of the contest, thanks to key contributions from Zach Rufo and Collin Wilcox.

Malden led 3-1 after one quarter before Medford stormed back to even the score at 4-4 at the break, thanks to a strike from Connearney, which was set-up by Joe Sargent.

Both teams would swap goals throughout the opening minutes of the third before Malden pushed ahead, 7-5, thanks to back-to-back tallies from Rufo and Wilcox.

Medford returns to action next Monday, May 6th when they visit Salem, while the Golden Tornadoes are scheduled to face Matignon on Saturday, May 4th at 1 p.m. Malden and Matignon were scheduled to compete earlier this spring, but the game was postponed to this weekend.

NEC High Schools: Boy’s Ice Hockey Top 10 Week Three Poll (Jan. 6th)

NEC Boy's Hockey WK3

By NEC High Schools | @NEC_HighSchools

Luke Evangelista‘s hat trick against Marblehead helped Winthrop defeat the Headers for an important Northeastern Conference (NEC) win on Saturday, which provided the Vikings with the top spot in this week’s poll.

Marblehead held the top spot in the first two polls, but will look to regroup on Wednesday when they face sixth-ranked Saugus in another important NEC North clash.

GloucesterDanvers and Lynn remain in the third, fourth and fifth positions, respectively, while Medford and Somerville each moved-up. The Mustangs’ tie with the Sachems helped the Blue and White secure the seventh position, while a pair of NEC South wins over Revere/Malden and Swampscott helped the Highlanders move-up two spots. The Highlanders, who haven’t lost since falling to Cambridge last month, will look to continue their current momentum on Wednesday when they host Watertown.

NEC High Schools: Boy’s Ice Hockey Top 10 Week Two Poll (Dec. 31st)

NEC Boys WK2

By NEC High Schools | @NEC_HighSchools

It has been a BUSY few weeks since we unveiled our initial Northeastern Conference (NEC) boy’s ice hockey poll two weeks ago, but now it is time to share our week two poll of the 2018-19 season, which once again finds Marblehead in the top spot. The Headers moved to 6-0 overall with some impressive wins recently over third-ranked Gloucester (8-3), Westfield (3-1) and Danvers (2-1).

Marblehead will look to continue its early season momentum later this week, especially on Saturday against second-ranked Winthrop. After falling to Falmouth (Maine) by a score of 3-1, the Vikings rebounded with a 5-4 win over fifth-ranked Lynn. Winthrop will face-off against eighth-ranked Medford on Wednesday – the Mustangs cracked the poll for the first time this season with an impressive 7-3 win over ninth-ranked Beverly. We’ll certainly keep our eyes on the Mustangs going forward.
