New England High Schools: Highlighting Darien’s Successful Start

By Matt Noonan | @MattyNoonz11

Months after falling to Ridgefield in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (Class L) championship, the Darien Blue Wave erased their one-goal setback with the Tigers by scoring a commanding 14-6 win last Friday.

Hudson Pokorny and Henri Pfeifle each recorded hat tricks in the win while helping the Blue Wave construct an eight-goal run in the second half to secure an impressive win over a Tigers team that has won two of three games this season.

The win certainly meant a lot to the Blue Wave, who certainly seem poised to make a run at the Class L crown later this spring. The mindset for the Blue Wave, according to Gametime CT, is to take it “one game at a time.”

As Pokorny mentioned to Gametime CT, this was certainly a “big one” for the Blue Wave, who recently beat Fairfield Ludlowe for their fourth win of the season.

Darien heads to Manhasset (New York) this weekend for their second out of state contest – they recently beat Yorktown, 11-7.

Also heading out of state this weekend is Daniel Hand, which will travel to Longmeadow on Friday for a 5 p.m. face-off. This should be a good test for the Tigers, who have won three games this season, including a 9-8 win on Wednesday over Shelton.

Longmeadow captured the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Central/West D2 crown last spring before falling to Concord-Carlisle in the state semifinals. C-C would advance to the championship round but lose to Reading, which won its first state title at Boston University.

One day after Daniel Hand visits Longmeadow, Simsbury will make the trek to Hingham on Saturday, April 13th. The Harbormen will enter the contest with a great deal of momentum, thanks to recent wins over North QuincySt. John’s Prep (Danvers) and Catholic Memorial.

We’ll have another notebook later this week, but make sure to stay connected with @NoontimeLax on Twitter for New England high school lacrosse news and scores!

In case you missed it, 3D Rising released its State-By-State Rankings on Tuesday, May 2nd and Darien secured the top spot, while New Canaan (7-4) and Wilton (8-3) checked-in second and third, respectively.

The Blue Wave (10-0) recently scored its 10th win of the season, defeating Staples-Westport by a score of 19-3 on Tuesday.

Today (Thursday, May 4th), they’re visiting St. Anthony’s of New York before returning home this Saturday, May 6th against Ridgefield (7-2).

Darien boasts an impressive 3-0 ledger against New York squads this season. They defeated Yorktown in their season-opener by a score of 15-4 before beating Niskayuna and Manhasset.

The Blue Wave checked-in sixth this week on the USA Today Sports Super 25 Expert Ranking. Last week, they were also ranked sixth in the country.

Ridgefield, which has won four-straight, will also be competing today against a New York squad as they host John Jay-Cross River.

As noted in this past weekend’s News TimeWes Carpenter was the hero for the Tigers in a dramatic one-goal victory over Staples-Westport on Saturday, April 29th.

The victory over the Wreckers was followed-up with a 19-3 win over Westhill on Tuesday of this week.

Following their contest against Darien, the Tigers will visit Trumbull (8-3) and Brien McMahon-Norwalk (4-6) before turning on the May 13th against St. Joseph (4-7).

Avery Foye, Christian Paley and Dom Giachello each recorded a hat trick, while Chris Allen registered 14 stops in Somers’ 10th win of the season over Hall-West Hartford. The quartet has guided the Spartans to an impressive 10-0 record – similar to the teams above, Somers is in action today against Rocky Hill and tomorrow against Ellington.

Last season, Ken McCarthy‘s unit beat Ellington twice en route to a Class S Final victory.

Despite falling to Somers earlier this season, Ellington boasts an 8-3 record – they recently secured their eighth win earlier this week with a 15-4 win over Canton.

Finally, a BIG congrats is due to the New Milford High School (8-5) boy’s lacrosse team, which punched its ticket to the upcoming state tournament.

The Green Wave, guided by second-year head coach Evan Cassells, have scored some impressive wins this season, including a hard-fought 12-11 overtime win over Brookfield last month. Brookfield defeated New Milford twice last season.
